A Bayesian spatiotemporal model for prevalence estimation of a VRE outbreak in a tertiary care hospital

A. Atkinson, B. Ellenberger, V Piezzi, T. Kaspar, O. Endrich, A. B. Leichtle, M. Zwahlen, J. Marschall

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the transmission of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in a hospital and the effectiveness of infection control measures. The results showed significant variations in prevalence between departments and floors, with sporadic spatial and temporal clustering during the outbreak. The introduction of new infection control measures led to a decrease in prevalence.

Ticagrelor Monotherapy or Dual Antiplatelet Therapy After Drug-Eluting Stent Implantation: Per-Protocol Analysis of the GLOBAL LEADERS Trial

Felice Gragnano, Marcel Zwahlen, Pascal Vranckx, Dik Heg, Kurt Schmidlin, Christian Hamm, Philippe Gabriel Steg, Giuseppe Gargiulo, Eugene P. McFadden, Yoshinobu Onuma, Ply Chichareon, Edouard Benit, Helge Mollmann, Luc Janssens, Sergio Leonardi, Aleksander Zurakowski, Alessio Arrivi, Robert Jan van Geuns, Kurt Huber, Ton Slagboom, Paolo Calabro, Patrick W. Serruys, Peter Juni, Marco Valgimigli, Stephan Windecker

Summary: The reanalysis of the GLOBAL LEADERS trial showed that ticagrelor plus aspirin for 1 month followed by ticagrelor monotherapy was not superior to 1-year standard dual antiplatelet therapy followed by aspirin alone at 2 years after coronary stenting in patients who complied with the study protocol.

Ten-year changes in colorectal cancer screening in Switzerland: The Swiss Health Interview Survey 2007, 2012 and 2017

Remi Schneider, Lamprini Syrogiannouli, Sarah Bissig, Tamara Scharf, Jean -Luc Bulliard, Cyril Ducros, Cinzia Del Giovane, Kali Tal, Marcel Zwahlen, Kevin Selby, Reto Auer

Summary: Recent recommendations suggest that the type of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in Switzerland has changed, with an increase in overall testing rates in most regions. The rise in colonoscopy rate is mainly driven by screening reasons. However, the coverage is still below the target set by European guidelines, and organized screening programs could play a role in increasing the testing rate.

A prospective cohort analysis of residential radon and UV exposures and malignant melanoma mortality in the Swiss population

Seckin Boz, Claudia Berlin, Marek Kwiatkowski, Murielle Bochud, Jean-Luc Bulliard, Marcel Zwahlen, Martin Roosli, Danielle Vienneau

Summary: The study found an association between residential radon exposure and melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer mortality, with the association weakening with age. There was a linear trend between radon exposure and skin cancer mortality, and outdoor occupation increased the risk of melanoma mortality associated with UV exposure.

Childhood body mass index trajectories, adult-onset type 2 diabetes, and obesity-related cancers

Britt W. Jensen, Julie Aarestrup, Kim Blond, Marit E. Jorgensen, Andrew G. Renehan, Dorte Vistisen, Jennifer L. Baker

Summary: Consistent childhood overweight or obesity may increase the rates of adult obesity-related cancer and decrease the rates of breast cancer. Adult-onset T2D confers additional risk for obesity-related cancer, but the effect does not differ across childhood BMI trajectories.

Age alone is not a barrier to efficacy of cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for colorectal peritoneal metastases: analysis of 1138 patients from the UK and Ireland Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases Registry

Michael E. Kelly, Niall J. O'Sullivan, Jarlath C. Bolger, Francesco Polignano, Haney Youssef, Andrew Renehan, Lee Malcomson, Sue Alves, Tom Cecil, Jurgen Mulsow, Brendan Moran, Faheez Mohamed

Summary: This study reviewed data from the UK and Ireland Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases Registry to assess the influence of age on the efficacy of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for colorectal peritoneal metastases. The results indicated that age did not appear to impact morbidity or long-term survival following CRS and HIPEC. Good survival outcomes were observed when complete cytoreduction was achieved.

Summary: This study investigated whether patients with 1-2 cm appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) need to undergo right-sided hemicolectomy, and found that right-sided hemicolectomy is not necessary after appendectomy for appendiceal NETs. Furthermore, it was found that regional lymph node metastases of appendiceal NETs are clinically irrelevant and additional postoperative exclusion of metastases and histopathological evaluation of risk factors is not supported. These findings should inform the development of treatment guidelines.

A Novel Automated Approach to Mutation-Cancer Relation Extraction by Incorporating Heterogeneous Knowledge

Jiarun Cao, Elke M. van Veen, Niels Peek, Andrew G. Renehan, Sophia Ananiadou

Summary: The automatic extraction of relations between gene mutations and cancer entities from cancer literature using text mining is crucial for precision cancer medicine. In this study, we propose a deep learning model that can jointly extract mutations and their associated cancers. By using two different knowledge bases and integrating them using sentence-based and attribute-aware methods, our model outperforms baseline models and achieves high F1 scores on three public datasets.

Stevan Stojic, Beatrice Minder, Gabriela Boehl, Tania Rivero, Marcel Zwahlen, Armin Gemperli, Marija Glisic

Summary: This study analyzed the methodological quality of spinal cord injury (SCI) research using systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRMA) methodology. The results showed that SRMA methodology has been widely used in SCI research, but some articles had poor methodological quality and did not fully adhere to methodological and reporting guidelines.

Niklaus Stulz, Urs Hepp, Stephan Kupferschmid, Nesrin Raible-Destan, Marcel Zwahlen

Summary: This study examined changes in suicide rates and methods in Switzerland between 1969-2018. Men had higher rates of suicide compared to women, Swiss citizens had higher rates compared to foreigners, and older residents had higher rates compared to other age groups. Overall, suicide rates had declined over the years, but some methods remained common in certain population subgroups.
