Genetic differences between smokers and never-smokers with lung cancer

Summary: Smoking is a major risk factor for lung cancer, and the trends of lung cancer epidemiology largely reflect past trends of cigarette smoking. The geographic patterns of mortality closely follow those of incidence. While lung cancer is strongly associated with cigarette smoking, it is important to note that only a small percentage of smokers develop the disease and there is also lung cancer in never-smokers. Lung cancer in never-smokers, though less common, is still a significant cause of cancer deaths globally. The genetic differences between lung cancer in smokers and never-smokers, including gene expression, gene mutations, and ethnic and gender differences, will be the focus of this review, along with a brief overview of treatment options for both groups.

Repeatability of dental shade by digital spectrophotometry in current, former, and never smokers

This study compared dental shade parameters among current, former, and never smokers using digital spectrophotometry and verified their repeatability. The results showed that the teeth whiteness of current smokers was significantly lower compared to never smokers, and digital spectrophotometry provided reliable measurements.

This study used single-cell transcriptomics to analyze surgical lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and normal lung tissue samples from smokers and non-smokers, revealing different cell populations and immune interactions between the two groups. The findings provide important insights into lung cancer heterogeneity and immune involvement, which can guide future therapeutic strategies.

Summary: By studying the differences in tumor microenvironment (TME) between lung cancer in never-smokers and smokers, it was found that dysfunction of alveolar cells induced by cigarette smoking contributes more to the aggressiveness of smoker lung cancer, while the immunosuppressive TME exerts more effects on never-smoker lung cancer's aggressiveness. The study also identified SPP1hi pro macrophage as another independent source of monocyte-derived macrophage. Furthermore, higher expression of immune checkpoint CD47 and lower expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-I in cancer cells of never-smoker lung cancer imply that CD47 may be a better immunotherapy target for lung cancer in never-smokers (LCINS).

Summary: This study reviewed data from the UK and Ireland Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases Registry to assess the influence of age on the efficacy of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for colorectal peritoneal metastases. The results indicated that age did not appear to impact morbidity or long-term survival following CRS and HIPEC. Good survival outcomes were observed when complete cytoreduction was achieved.

Summary: This study investigated whether patients with 1-2 cm appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) need to undergo right-sided hemicolectomy, and found that right-sided hemicolectomy is not necessary after appendectomy for appendiceal NETs. Furthermore, it was found that regional lymph node metastases of appendiceal NETs are clinically irrelevant and additional postoperative exclusion of metastases and histopathological evaluation of risk factors is not supported. These findings should inform the development of treatment guidelines.

A Novel Automated Approach to Mutation-Cancer Relation Extraction by Incorporating Heterogeneous Knowledge

Summary: The automatic extraction of relations between gene mutations and cancer entities from cancer literature using text mining is crucial for precision cancer medicine. In this study, we propose a deep learning model that can jointly extract mutations and their associated cancers. By using two different knowledge bases and integrating them using sentence-based and attribute-aware methods, our model outperforms baseline models and achieves high F1 scores on three public datasets.
