Unique Photophysical Properties of 1,8-Naphthalimide Derivatives: Generation of Semi-stable Radical Anion Species by Photo-Induced Electron Transfer from a Carboxy Group

Hironori Izawa, Fumika Yasufuku, Toshiki Nokami, Shinsuke Ifuku, Hiroyuki Saimoto, Toru Matsui, Kenji Morihashi, Masato Sumita

Summary: The study investigated the photo-induced colorimetric reaction mechanism of different cationic receptors, suggesting that substituents on the naphthalene ring can facilitate the generation of naphthalimide-based radical anions. Additionally, it was found that the trimethylammonium group plays a crucial role in stabilizing the radical anion species.

Dyeing of chitin nanofibers with reactive dyes and preparation of their sheets and nanofiber/resin composites

Mizuki Kishimoto, Hironori Izawa, Hiroyuki Saimoto, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: The study successfully obtained chitin nanofibers of different colors using reactive dyes, which are resistant to hot water and detergents and can be mixed to produce a variety of colors. Through evaluation using reflection spectrum and color space, the optimal ratio of reactive dye to chitin was determined to be 5%, while maintaining the morphology of the nanofibers.

Optimum Preparation Conditions for Highly Individualized Chitin Nanofibers Using Ultrasonic Generator

Dagmawi Abebe Zewude, Hironori Izawa, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: The alpha-chitin derived from crab shells was partially deacetylated with 30% sodium hydroxide to obtain a deacetylation degree of 36%. Partially deacetylated chitin nanofibers were successfully prepared using weak ultrasonic energy from a domestic ultrasonic cleaner. The optimal conditions for obtaining fine nanofibers with high yield were found to be ultrasonication at 45 kHz frequency for 20 minutes.

Preparation and recycling property of nanofiber-reinforced polystyrene molded product using the emulsion-forming ability of chitin nanofibers

Koichi Tanabe, Hironori Izawa, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: Utilizing the emulsion-forming ability of partially deacetylated chitin nanofibers, a composite with polystyrene was prepared, significantly improving the mechanical and thermal properties of polystyrene. The optimal mixing ratio of chitin nanofibers for improving mechanical properties was 7%. The composite material showed good recyclability without a decrease in mechanical properties after hot pressing molding.

Hironori Izawa, Tomoe Yonemura, Yumi Nakamura, Yuta Toyoshima, Momoka Kawakami, Hiroyuki Saimoto, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: This study introduces hierarchical surface wrinkles and bumps fabricated through drying-induced shrinkage. The kappa-carrageenan system shows hierarchical wrinkles, while the iota-carrageenan system exhibits hierarchical bumps.

Disease resistance and growth promotion activities of chitin/cellulose nanofiber from spent mushroom substrate to plant

Hujun Li, Saori Yoshida, Naofumi Mitani, Mayumi Egusa, Momoko Takagi, Hironori Izawa, Teruyuki Matsumoto, Hironori Kaminaka, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: This study investigated the potential use of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) in agriculture and successfully isolated chitin/cellulose nanofiber complex (CCNFC) from SMS. Further research revealed that low concentration CCNFC water dispersion exhibited significant plant disease resistance and plant growth promotion activities.

Production of chitin nanoparticles by bottom-up approach from alkaline chitin solution

Dagmawi Abebe Zewude, Takako Noguchi, Kimihiko Sato, Hironori Izawa, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: In this study, chitin nanoparticles were successfully prepared by alkaline treatment and regeneration, which showed small particle size, high dispersibility, and high heat resistance. Compared to nanofibers, nanoparticles had lower viscosity, allowing for preparation at higher concentrations, and can be easily redispersed in water after concentration.

A photo-induced colorimetric reaction of N,N′-bis[2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl]-1,8:4,5-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide for detection of carboxylate anions

Hironori Izawa, Fumika Yasufuku, Tomoko Matsumoto, Shinsuke Ifuku, Hiroyuki Saimoto, Masato Sumita

Summary: A novel colorimetric sensor system utilizing the photo-induced colorimetric reaction of TENDI is demonstrated for the detection and quantification of carboxylate derivatives. The presence of CH3COONa induces a photo-induced colorimetric reaction in the TENDI solution under UV irradiation, enabling the detection of carboxylate derivatives. Additionally, TENDI has the ability to distinguish the structural features of carboxylate derivatives based on color tone.

Drying-Induced Surface Wrinkles Generated on Chitosan Films Having Polyion Complex Skin Layers: Effects of Physical Properties of Skin Layers and Substrates on Surface Wrinkling upon Drying

Hironori Izawa, Shota Ishisaka, Hiroyuki Saimoto, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: The effects of the physical properties of skin layers and substrates on drying-induced surface wrinkling were investigated. It was found that the size of surface wrinkles formed by different polymers on skin layers varied. The hardness of the skin layers was the primary factor determining wrinkle size.

Optimization of Chitin Nanofiber Preparation by Ball Milling as Filler for Composite Resin

Dagmawi Abebe Zewude, Hironori Izawa, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: Chitin nanofibers were prepared by mechanically grinding chitin using a ball mill. The optimal conditions for efficient preparation were determined by analyzing the resulting water dispersion and cast film. The length and width of the nanofibers were measured, and it was found that the size of the balls, total ball weight, and milling time all had an impact on the grinding efficiency and fiber properties.

Water-soluble guanidinylated chitosan: a candidate material for protein delivery systems

Hironori Izawa, Ayaka Yagi, Ryo Umemoto, Shinsuke Ifuku

Summary: In this study, water-soluble guanidinylated chitosan (WGCS) is introduced as a potential material for protein delivery systems to improve the cellular internalization of protein/peptide drugs. WGCS, composed mainly of guanidinylated chitosan, chitosan, and chitin units, showed higher internalization into HeLa cells compared to common chitosan. The increased internalization was attributed to the guanidinylation and electrostatic interactions between WGCS and the protein.

Evaluation of the Safety and Gastrointestinal Migration of Guanidinylated Chitosan after Oral Administration to Rats

Nowshin Farzana Khan, Hideaki Nakamura, Hironori Izawa, Shinsuke Ifuku, Daisuke Kadowaki, Masaki Otagiri, Makoto Anraku

Summary: Researchers evaluated the in vivo safety of GCS and observed no deleterious effects after a single oral administration of an excessive dose. They also found that GCS had a slower migration rate in the gastrointestinal tract and exhibited mucoadhesive properties. Future studies will focus on using GCS to improve absorption of poorly water-soluble and poorly membrane-permeable drugs.
