J. Inst. Brew. 116(3), 312-315, 2010 The concentration of a number of metals in a selection of brands of canned beers available in the Nigerian market was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after HNO3/H2O, digestion. The results of the survey indicated that chromium, iron, nickel, cadmium and lead were present at concentrations above the permissible levels in drinking water, while the metals cobalt, zinc, aluminium and copper were present at levels below the permissible limits in drinking water. The metal content in the different beer types do not pose a risk to consumer health since the estimated metal daily intake per kg bodyweight is below the provisional tolerable intake of these metals as set by the World Health Organization.
