Summary: Spherical nickel hydroxystannate (NiSn(OH)(6), NHS) particles were prepared and mixed with PP matrix, PER and EG to study the flame-retardant, smoke suppressant and thermal degradation properties. The results showed that the PP composite with 2phr PER, 28phr EG and 2phr NHS passed the UL-94 V-0 level and significantly reduced heat release and smoke production.

Summary: The incorporation of POE significantly improved the toughness and impact strength of PP composites, as well as enhancing the flame retardancy. SEM images showed that POE droplets were finely dispersed in the PP matrix, exhibiting a typical two-phase structure. Rheological behaviors indicated improved elasticity and longer relaxation times, with the formation of an interparticle network in the composites.

Summary: In this study, sisal-fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP/SF) flame-retardant composites were prepared using the two-step melt blending method. An intumescent flame retardant (IFR) composed of silane-coated ammonium polyphosphate (Si-APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) was used. The PP/SF composite prepared by PP/SF secondary blending with IFR showed excellent flame-retardant performance, with a limited oxygen index of about 28.3% and passing the UL-94 V-0 rating (3.2 mm) in the vertical combustion test. The mechanical properties of the composites prepared using three different mixing processes were similar.

Summary: In this study, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was coated on the surface of ramie fabrics (RFs) to obtain flame-retardant RF reinforced epoxy resin composites. The flameretardant composites achieved a limiting oxygen index of 33.8% and UL-94 V-0 rating when the weight gain rate of APP in RFs was about 20%. Additionally, the flame-retardant composites showed reduced peak heat release rate, total heat release values, and smoke production. However, the presence of APP had a negative effect on the internal compatibility and mechanical properties of the composites.

Summary: By compounding expandable graphite and aluminum hypophosphite, flame-retardant ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) composites were prepared with enhanced combustion performance. Thermogravimetric analysis results showed that AHP and EG promoted the carbonization of EVA to form the char layer, increasing LOI value and the probability to pass UL-94 V-0 rating.

Summary: This feature article focuses on one of the most impressive halogen-free combinations in polyurethane foams (PUFs): expandable graphite (EG) and phosphorus-based flame retardants (P-FRs). The synergistic effect of EG and P-FRs improves the flame retardancy of PUFs by charring and maintaining a thermally insulating residue morphology, offering significant advantages.

Summary: In this study, a DOPO derivative-conjugated flame retardant P-PPD-Ph with two hydroxyl groups was synthesized and used to prepare polylactic acid (PLA) conjugated flame-retardant composites. The flame-retardant properties of the composites were investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning test (UL94). It was found that the addition of 5 wt% conjugated flame retardant achieved a V-0 rating, indicating excellent flame retardancy.

Summary: Expandable graphite is used as a flame-retardant in polymers, forming a network of graphite worms that act as a thermal barrier. The anisotropy of heat conductivity in the intertwined network allows for heat dissipation in-plane but poorly out of plane, explaining the thermal barrier effect created by the entangled worms.

Summary: A series of flexible polyurethane foams (FPUFs) were prepared with different combinations of flame retardants and additives to evaluate their synergistic effects on the properties of FPUFs. It was found that the combination of expandable graphite and phosphorous polyol significantly improved the char yield of the foams, thereby enhancing their flame retardancy. Furthermore, the addition of expandable graphite effectively reduced smoke and toxic gas emissions, while the replacement of polyether polyol with castor oil maintained the physical and mechanical properties and improved the bio-based content.

Summary: Efficient and hydrophobic modificated ammonium polyphosphate (M-APP) and charring agent (M-CA) were prepared using sol-gel method for the preparation of water-resistant and flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) composites. The results showed improved flame retardancy and reduced heat and smoke release in the PP composites. Additionally, the PP composite with M-APP/M-CA = 3:1 exhibited excellent water resistance even after soaking in 70 degrees water for 168 hours.

Summary: In this study, a liquid-phosphorus-containing polyester diol (PPE) was incorporated into flame-retardant polyester-based flexible polyurethane foams (P-FPUFs). The results showed that PPE increased the flexibility of the foams and reduced the heat release rate and total heat release. Furthermore, the addition of expandable graphite (EG) further decreased the smoke production and increased the char formation.
