Background Tinea capitis (TC) is the most common mycological infection in childhood. The epidemiology of TC varies depending on the geographical area and the time of study, and although it is an important public health problem in our area, only a few long-term studies have focused on children. Objectives The aim of this study was to analyse the main epidemiological, clinical and microbiological features of TC in children over 30 years and compare these features with those of other tineas. Methods We undertook a retrospective study of 818 tineas in children at a referral hospital in southern Spain diagnosed between 1977 and 2006, concentrating on TC. Results Of the 444 TC diagnosed, 61.5% were in boys. Most children (66.9%) were aged 4-9 years. Twelve patients were immigrants. Inflammatory clinical forms were present in 18.2% of cases. At the time of diagnosis, 10.4% of the cases had been treated with antifungal agents. The most frequently isolated dermatophyte was Microsporum canis (63.5%). Conclusions We report the largest study of TC in Spain. Our results were very similar to those in other national studies, noting a predominance of non-inflammatory cases of TC caused by zoophilic dermatophytes. Although the species of the causal dermatophytes have not varied substantially in this period, the increasing number of immigrants may lead to a change in the aetiology of TC in the future. The number of cases referred to the dermatology department who have already been treated shows a lack of communication between primary care and dermatology.

Summary: This study examines the evolution of quality of life in patients with cervicofacial non-melanoma skin cancer during treatment. The results show that patients experience the greatest deterioration in quality of life at the time of diagnosis, with some improvement during treatment. In comparison with previous studies, our population had lower scores and less improvement during follow-up.

Sun exposure and protection habits in transplant athletes: an international survey

M. Navarrete-De Galvez, J. M. Ruiz Sanchez, E. Navarrete-De Galvez, J. Aguilera, F. Rivas-Ruiz, M. de Troya-Martin, E. Herrera-Ceballos, M. de Galvez

Summary: Transplant recipients, especially athletes, are at increased risk of skin cancer due to sun exposure. Despite high awareness, sunburn remains common. Wearing a hat is significantly associated with a reduced prevalence of sunburn, highlighting the importance of sun protection education in this population.

Ultraviolet exposure of competitors during a Tokyo Olympic Sailing Regatta Test Event

Jose Vicente Gutierrez-Manzanedo, Carmen Vaz Pardal, Nuria Blazquez-Sanchez, Maria Victoria De Galvez, Jose Aguilera-Arjona, Jose Luis Gonzalez-Montesinos, Francisco Rivas Ruiz, Magdalena De Troya-Martin

Summary: This study evaluated the risk of sun exposure and photoprotection practices among Spanish sailors during Olympic competitions. The findings showed that the sailors had high levels of UV radiation exposure, a high rate of sunburn, and insufficient adherence to sun-protective behaviors, particularly in regards to sunscreen use. Sports federations should develop educational campaigns to raise awareness about sun-related exposure habits and photoprotection behaviors to reduce the risk of skin cancer among these athletes.

Natalia Sylvia Ramos, Oliver Jimenez, Silvia Habicheyn-Hiar, Angeles Roca, Francisco Rivas-Ruiz, Davinia M. Resurreccion, Magdalena de Troya

Summary: Psoriasis, a high incidence dermatosis related to stress, can be effectively managed through mindfulness-based interventions such as Compassionate Emotional Accompaniment Technique (CEAT). A study found that CEAT was more effective in emotional management compared to Emotional Disclosure control group in patients with severe psoriasis. These findings support the use of CEAT intervention in clinical settings to improve emotional management in this population group.

Occupational Sun Exposure Among Physical Education Teachers in Primary and Secondary Schools in Andalusia, Spain

Diego Rodriguez Baron, Nuria Blazquez Sanchez, Francisco Rivas Ruiz, Alba Rodriguez Martinez, Jose Aguilera Arjona, Guillermo de Castro Maqueda, Ines Gomez Araujo, Maria Victoria de Galvez Aranda, Antonio Rodriguez Martinez, Magdalena de Troya Martin

Summary: Chronic sun exposure and sunburns are the main causes of skin cancer, and physical education teachers are at high risk due to their work nature. This study in Andalusia, Spain, analyzed the sun exposure and photoprotection practices of primary and secondary physical education teachers. The findings showed that teachers had high UV radiation exposure, often exceeding international recommendations. The study also revealed low compliance with photoprotection measures, indicating the need for interventions to reduce sun exposure and promote early detection of skin cancer.

Clinical and functional assessment in patients admitted with pluripathological dysphagia according to the mode of feeding: Through a gastrostomy tube or oral

Cristina Lopez-Munoz, Marta Aranda-Gallardo, Francisco Rivas-Ruiz, Ana Belen Moya-Suarez, Jose Miguel Morales-Asencio, Jose Carlos Canca-Sanchez

Summary: Almost 50% of multipathological patients have dysphagia. This study compared the dysphagia in two groups of multipathological patients: one group fed with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and the other group fed orally. The results showed that patients in the PEG group were mainly diagnosed with dementia, while stroke was the most relevant pathology in those fed orally. Both groups had high comorbidity and dependence.
