Three sediment cores were taken from Guanabara Bay. Two of them yielded Pb-210 profiles that could be applied for dating purposes. Actual sedimentation rates of approximately 1 cm year(-1) (five times higher than the baseline values) were observed for both sediment cores, which agree with the reviewed existing data in the literature related to Guanabara Bay sedimentation rates based on Pb-210. Dating validation was carried out based on the chromium, copper and lead profiles, on the Pb-210 flux and on the historical record of the main physical interventions occurring in the last century, such as embankment, the channeling of main rivers and the construction of express roads. At the end of this process, only one sediment core dating could be adequately validated.

Historic variation of trace elements in pinnipeds with spatially segregated trophic habits reveals differences in exposure to pollution

Maite De Maria, Diana Szteren, Javier Garcia-Alonso, Carlos E. de Rezende, Rodrigo Araujo Goncalves, Jose Marcus Godoy, Francisco R. Barboza

Summary: This study analyzed the historic changes in trace element concentrations in teeth of two species of pinnipeds in the Uruguayan coastline from 1941 to present day. The results showed differential exposure to trace elements depending on feeding areas and diet, with one species having higher levels of certain elements due to industrial activities in the '70s and '80s. Dentin was highlighted as a reliable matrix for historic studies on trace element exposure.

Summary: The study conducted sampling and analysis of Perna perna mytilid mussels in tropical regions, revealing associations between metals and oxidative stress endpoints. Specific metal elements were found to have direct effects, as well as detailing the detoxification mechanisms of metalloproteins. The results indicate that Perna perna mussels can serve as effective tropical bioindicators, with further monitoring efforts recommended.

Risk of Collapse in Water Quality in the Guandu River (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

Leonardo Bacha, Rodrigo Ventura, Maria Barrios, Jean Seabra, Diogo Tschoeke, Gizele Garcia, Bruno Masi, Larissa Macedo, Jose Marcus de O. Godoy, Carlos Cosenza, Carlos E. de Rezende, Vinicius Lima, Adacto B. Ottoni, Cristiane Thompson, Fabiano Thompson

Summary: The Guandu River, a major water source for over nine million people in Rio de Janeiro, has been heavily polluted for more than two decades, leading to high levels of phosphorus, cyanobacteria, and enteric bacteria. The use of Phoslock has proven ineffective in reducing phosphorus levels, and water extracted from the river has unpleasant odors and tastes. Proposed solutions include constructing sewage treatment plants, implementing strict water quality monitoring, environmental recovery efforts, and establishing protected areas to improve water quality.

Summary: Representative fluid sampling of surface geothermal manifestations and its analytical data quality assurance and quality control are crucial for understanding geothermal reservoir processes. In this study, an interlaboratory test was conducted for the chemical analyses of water samples from various sources, revealing relatively low analytical uncertainties but suggesting a need for revision in the analytical methods for certain ions.

Siltation processes and metal sediment profiles in a hydroelectric power plant reservoir in the Paraiba do Sul river Basin, Southeastern Brazil

Summary: The middle Paraiba do Sul River region, home to Brazil's largest steel industry, has experienced accelerated sedimentation in reservoirs due to industrial activities. This study aimed to determine the sediment accumulation rate using Pb-210 dating. The results showed a significant increase in sediment accumulation rate over the years. Chromium and zinc concentrations decreased, indicating improvements in environmental policies. Mercury concentrations were attributed to changes in sediment granulometry caused by land use transformations.

Geochemical behavior of rare earth elements (REE) in urban reservoirs: the case of Funil Reservoir, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

J. M. C. O. Santos-Neves, S. R. Patchineelam, D. F. Araujo, J. M. O. Godoy, A. C. Almeida

Summary: The present study aims to assess the impact of Funil Reservoir on the biogeochemical behavior of rare earth elements (REE). Results show that Funil Reservoir acts as a biogeochemical barrier, modifying the fluvial transport of REE. However, the seasonal algal bloom in reservoirs may also influence the behavior of REE.

Summary: This paper introduces the ECCANDE project, a Special Protection Scheme (SPS) based on the structure of a Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection, and Control System (WAMPACS). The project enables the interconnection between the Argentinean and Paraguayan bulk power transmission systems, protecting the Itaipu and Yacyreta power plants. The development and implementation of this WAMPACS-based SPS took over a decade, involving modeling, design, manufacturing, simulations, and field tests. Results demonstrate that the ECCANDE SPS successfully enables interconnection and protects against synchronism loss.

BALLISTIC FRAGMENTS ANALYSIS BY MICRO BALLISTIC EXAMINATIONS, CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND LEAD ISOTOPE RATIOS: A REVIEW

Emanuella T. V. Bezerra, Jose M. de O. Godoy

Summary: Firearms and ammunition identification plays a crucial role in solving crimes and confirming offenders. Qualitative analysis and standards can be used to investigate cases when suspect weapons and ammunition are found at crime scenes. In cases where only ammunition fragments are discovered, alternative methods such as analyzing the elemental composition of lead alloy and verifying lead isotopic ratios are necessary. This study reviews basic ballistics concepts, conventional ballistic confrontation techniques, chemical analysis of ballistic fragments, and the use of lead isotopic analysis in ballistic identification.

METALS IN SEDIMENTS FROM THE SHELF-SLOPE INTERFACE OFF THE POTIGUAR BASIN OFFSHORE OIL EXPLORATION AREA, NE BRAZIL

Luiz D. Lacerda, Jose M. O. Godoy, Rodrigo A. Goncalves, Marcia F. Rocha, Breno F. Dutra

Summary: Sediments collected from the Potiguar Basin in northeastern Brazil were found to be rich in organic matter and metals, with metal concentrations increasing with depth. The distribution of iron (Fe), chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu) suggests some changes along the sediment transport, with Fe and Cr being less affected by accumulation in deeper sediments.

Assessing over decadal biomass burning influence on particulate matter composition in subequatorial Amazon: literature review, remote sensing, chemical speciation and machine learning application

Adriana Gioda, Vinicius L. Mateus, Sandra S. Hacon, Eliane Ignotti, Ruan G. S. Gomes, Marcos Felipe S. Pedreira, Jose Marcus Godoy, Rivanildo Dallacort, Ana Lucia M. Loureiro, Fernando Morais, Paulo Artaxo

Summary: The study analyzed aerosols in the Brazilian subequatorial Amazon region and found that during the dry season, the concentration of particulate matter in the atmosphere is elevated due to intense biomass burning. Machine learning techniques were used to assess the importance of explanatory variables, and it was found that PM2.(0), BC, and most water-soluble ions have higher concentrations during the dry season, providing further evidence of the influence of biomass burning.
