Summary: This study revealed that higher baseline lean mass was independently associated with better survival among prevalent PD patients, while the longitudinal changes in lean mass were not significantly associated with mortality. On the other hand, maintaining a low fat status over time appeared to be related to a lower likelihood of death in the PD population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate variations in mortality and hospitalization cases among ESRD patients receiving HD care in 13 SMAs of Fukuoka prefecture. Significant differences in hospitalization risks and increased mortality risks due to heart failure and malignancy in different SMAs were identified. Variations in hospital length of stay, total hospitalization cost, and cost per day according to SMAs were also statistically significant.

Summary: Social frailty is prevalent among hemodialysis patients and may be associated with early physical dysfunction. In patients without physical frailty, social frailty is independently associated with reduced gait speed, leg strength, and peak oxygen uptake. However, in patients with physical frailty, there is no association between social frailty and physical function.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the body composition of ovarian cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and evaluate its impact on surgical and disease-related outcomes. The results showed that skeletal muscle index (SMI) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were associated with clinical and treatment variables. Lower pre-treatment SMI was associated with less complex surgery, while a decrease in VAT was associated with worse overall survival.

Summary: This study found that long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 was associated with cardiovascular disease outcomes among patients receiving maintenance in-center hemodialysis. Stronger associations between long-term PM2.5 exposure and adverse effects were observed among patients who were of advanced age, had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or were Asian.

Summary: This study investigated the association between computed tomography-assessed body composition and survival outcomes in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) receiving immunotherapy. The results showed that high subcutaneous adipose tissue percentage (SAT%) predicts better survival outcomes and this association is consistent in different subgroups.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between frailty and other prognostic factors in patients admitted with COVID-19. The results showed that frailty was independently associated with age, co-morbidity, and systemic inflammation. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between frailty and clinical outcomes in COVID-19.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and prevalent and incident frailty in the elderly. The results showed that MetS was associated with an increased likelihood of both prevalent and incident frailty. MetS should be considered as a risk factor for frailty and be taken into consideration in geriatric assessments.

Summary: Exposure to p-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) is associated with an increased risk of endocrine-related reproductive cancers in women. The study found a significant association between high urinary concentrations of 2,5-dichlorophenol (2,5-DCP) and these cancers. Further prospective and mechanistic studies are needed to understand the pathogenesis of endocrine-related female cancers potentially associated with p-DCB exposure.

Summary: We compared the effects of three sulfonylureas (SUs) and initial SUs doses on adverse glycemic and cardiovascular events among nursing home residents. Our findings suggest that new use of glimepiride and standard SU doses may increase the risk of severe hypoglycemic events, while cardiovascular outcomes may not be affected by the choice of SU medication or dose.

Summary: The effect of ambient PM10 and PM2.5 on lung function modified by body muscle and adipose tissue is not fully understood. This study investigated the association between seasonal average air pollutants and lung function in asthmatic patients modified by body composition indicators. The results showed that total body muscle significantly modified the negative association between PM10 and lung function among asthma patients, while obesity and low total body muscle increased susceptibility to the adverse effects of PM10 on lung function.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether the benefits of dapagliflozin varied by background glucose-lowering therapy (GLT) in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results demonstrated consistent effects of dapagliflozin on both primary and secondary endpoints across different baseline GLT classes or combinations. Therefore, dapagliflozin has significant clinical implications in reducing kidney and cardiovascular events.

Summary: Adding SGLT2 inhibitors to CKD screening can be cost-effective, with a one-time screening at age 55 having an ICER of $86,300 per QALY gained, reducing the incidence of kidney failure. Screening every 10 years from age 35 to 75 costs less than $100,000 per QALY gained.

Summary: Background: Kidney stone disease is common and can lead to complications in kidney transplant recipients. This study found that approximately 2% of kidney transplant recipients were diagnosed with a kidney stone in the first 3 years after transplantation. Risk factors for kidney stone events included a history of kidney stones and longer dialysis vintage.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Galectin-3 (Gal3), a protein with proinflammatory and profibrotic properties, has been implicated in the development and progression of both AKI and CKD. Elevated Gal3 levels in the serum of AKI and CKD patients and its association with CKD progression have been observed. Gal3 is also associated with AKI incidence in critically ill patients, and blocking Gal3 has shown promising results in reducing AKI incidence and mortality in animal models.
