Summary: This study aimed to develop a transmural monitoring pathway for healthcare professionals to monitor the recovery of hip fracture patients and assess the pathway's feasibility and initial outcomes. The results showed that patients experienced a decline in functional level during the hospital phase and made significant progress during the inpatient rehabilitation phase. In the outpatient follow-up phase, recovery was still ongoing but most patients had not returned to their pre-fracture functional levels. The pathway demonstrated excellent feasibility during the hospital phase but improvements could be made in other phases.

Summary: The study utilized machine learning methods to create a predictive model of rehabilitation outcomes for postacute hip fracture patients. The results showed that machine learning models outperformed linear and logistic regression models in predicting rehabilitation outcomes, and the confidence levels of predicted parameters were associated with MMSE, prefracture mFIM, and admission FIM scores.

Summary: Bone mineral density screening rates among women prior to hip fracture are low, with lower rates among black patients compared to white patients. More screening should be recommended for otherwise healthy black patients above the age of 65. Additionally, treatment rates need to increase among those diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study found that undernutrition and heart failure have effects on the outcomes of convalescent rehabilitation in patients with hip fractures. Low BMI and high BNP were significantly associated with motor function, and the simultaneous presence of low BMI and high BNP had a greater impact on motor function than each factor alone. Furthermore, the simultaneous presence of low BMI and high BNP was also associated with cognitive function at discharge. Comprehensive multidisciplinary management is necessary for patients with hip fractures, including preoperative or early postoperative nutritional support and rehabilitation, as well as rehabilitation nutrition care management.

Summary: This study aimed to explore older adults' experiences of rehabilitation and the recovery process after a hip fracture. The results indicated that rehabilitation interventions provided by competent healthcare professionals, as well as support from family members and friends, were crucial for satisfactory recovery. The participants' experiences highlighted the importance of addressing both the physical and psychological impacts, and customizing interventions to suit each individual's wishes and needs throughout the recovery process.

Summary: This study presents the design and evaluation of a novel assistive platform, SWalker, for hip rehabilitation in elderly patients. Functional validation with healthy elderly subjects and clinical validation with hip fracture patients demonstrated that SWalker can enhance autonomous gait and shorten rehabilitation therapy.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of multicomponent home-based rehabilitation compared to different control interventions in older patients after hip fracture surgery. The results showed that multicomponent home-based rehabilitation is comparable to in-hospital rehabilitation in improving muscle strength, gait speed, balance, activities of daily living (ADL), and quality of life (QoL). Therefore, healthcare professionals should develop more compliance-oriented multicomponent home-based rehabilitation programs for optimal outcomes.

Summary: This study evaluated machine learning models to predict mortality for Medicare beneficiaries aged >65 years treated for hip fracture in Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities. Both logistic regression and multilayer perceptron performed similarly in predicting 30-day and 1-year mortality, but MLP models showed better ability to calibrate to local data and yield clinical specificity in mortality prediction.

Summary: This study identified age, PFMS, premorbid Katz-ADL, surgical treatment, ASA score, type of anesthesia, history of dementia, and cotreatment by a geriatrician as independent early predictors for discharge to a geriatric rehabilitation department compared to discharge home in older patients after hip fracture surgery. Identical predictors were found for discharge to a nursing home compared to discharge home, except for history of dementia and premorbid Katz-ADL.

Summary: This study examines the impact of rural hospital closures on hospitalization rates for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSC) and emergency care sensitive conditions (ECSC). The findings suggest that closures can lead to increases in ACSC admissions and decreases in ECSC admissions, with a subsequent effect on in-hospital mortality rates.

Summary: This study evaluated the temporal trends in the supply of surgeons treating cancer patients in rural and urban areas. The findings showed a decline in surgical specialist density in rural areas from 2004 to 2017, while urban areas experienced a slight decline, resulting in an increased disparity in physician supply between rural and urban areas. The largest increase in workforce supply disparity was observed in colorectal surgeons and general surgeons, although the absolute changes were small. The heterogeneity of the workforce was higher in rural areas compared to urban areas.

Summary: The utilization rate of respite care in Taiwan is low, and there have been few studies on the effects of in-home respite care on caregiver burden. This study used Taiwan's long-term care plan 1.0 database to examine the impact of in-home respite care on caregiver burden. Results showed that caregiver burden scores decreased significantly after receiving in-home respite care for more than 14 days.

Summary: There are sex differences in dietary patterns and their association with the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) among adults in the Philippines. Rice-based and meat-containing patterns have a protective effect on DBM in males, while protein-rich foods, cereal, and sugar pattern decrease DBM likelihood in both males and females. However, females with vegetable and corn patterns have an increased risk for DBM.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Programs, compare the characteristics of counties with and without RRPD programs, and identify rural places where future RRPD programs could be developed. The study found that RRPD programs are often affiliated with family medicine programs and medical schools, and RRPD counties have larger populations, higher population densities, and a higher percentage of non-White or Hispanic populations compared to non-RRPD counties. These findings can be used to address health disparities and workforce maldistribution.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the quality-adjusted life expectancy (QALE) and loss-of-QALE for patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke in South Korea, and to compare them between genders. The survival function of stroke patients was estimated and extrapolated to lifetime. The QALE was estimated using the EuroQol 5-dimension (EQ-5D) questionnaire. The results showed that stroke has a significant impact on life in Korea, especially for males who survived hemorrhagic stroke. Further studies are needed to quantify the burden of stroke and the long-term care needs from a societal perspective.
