Summary: This meta-analysis compared the mortality, morbidity, and long-term survival of pancreatic resections with and without venous resection in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. The results showed that patients undergoing venous resection had a higher risk of postoperative hemorrhage, incomplete resection, lymph node metastasis, and larger tumors. However, overall survival and complication rates were comparable between the two groups. This suggests that venous resection is a safe and feasible option for patients with suspected venous involvement in pancreatic cancer.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the use of venous and arterial resection with vascular reconstruction in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Different types of venous and arterial resections and various methods of vascular reconstructions are described. The most common venous reconstructions, such as end-to-end anastomosis and interposition graft with the use of an autologous vein, are given the most attention.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of liver resection (LR) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in octogenarian patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that LR had a higher rate of complications, longer operative time, and hospital stays, but had better long-term outcomes in terms of survival rate.

Summary: Surgical resection is the main treatment for several pancreatic disorders, with postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) being the main complication. This study retrospectively reviewed 56 patients undergoing Whipple's procedure and found a POPF rate of 64.5%, which was significantly higher in patients with soft pancreatic tissue.

Summary: This study compared the rates of complication in patients undergoing thyroid lobectomy, total thyroidectomy, and completion thyroidectomy. It was found that there were no significant differences in complication rates among the three surgical approaches when performed by a high-volume surgeon.

Summary: This article reviews the pharmacokinetics and safety of subcutaneous testosterone therapy and provides guidance for clinicians on counseling and managing patients who choose this route. Limited evidence suggests that subcutaneous administration results in comparable pharmacokinetics and testosterone levels as intramuscular injection. The subcutaneous route is easier for self-administration and has the potential to improve patient adherence.

Summary: Comparing laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) and open liver resection (OLR) for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), LLR showed advantages in terms of blood transfusion, resection rate, length of stay, overall morbidities, and death due to tumor recurrence compared to OLR. However, LLR was associated with smaller tumor size, fewer major hepatectomies, lower lymph node dissection rate, and inferior 5-year overall survival.

Summary: Mutations in the splicing factor SF3B1 are frequently occurring in various cancers and drive tumor progression. This study demonstrates that SF3B1 is a target gene of HIF1 and positively regulates HIF1 pathway activity by facilitating the binding of HIF1 complex to HREs. The reduction in SF3B1 levels impede tumor formation and progression via impaired HIF signaling in a mouse model for pancreatic cancer.

Summary: Minimally invasive pancreatic surgeries are becoming more common, but further research is needed to evaluate their safety and efficacy, especially in pancreatoduodenectomy. Studies have shown advantages of minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy in terms of shorter hospital stay and less intraoperative blood loss, while minimally invasive pancreatoduodenectomy does not present clear superiority over open approaches.

Summary: Neoadjuvant treatment followed by highly complex surgical procedures has shown promising results in patients with locally advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (LAPC). Various complex surgical techniques have emerged in recent years to optimize local control of the disease and improve postoperative outcomes. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of preoperative surgical planning and different surgical resection strategies in LAPC after neoadjuvant treatment for selected patients who do not have any other potentially curative options.

Summary: There is no evidence of an impact on survival with extended versus standard lymph node resection. However, the operating time may have been longer and blood loss greater in the extended resection group. Current evidence neither supports nor refutes the effect of extended lymph lymphadenectomy in people with adenocarcinoma of the head of the pancreas.

Summary: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) is effective for most patients with long-term durability, but approximately one fifth of patients will require reoperation, with inadequate weight loss accounting for only one fifth of these cases, and band slippage/prolapse being the most common non weight-related indication for reoperation.

Summary: Patients who underwent pancreatic surgery following emergency department admission had worse perioperative outcomes, higher mortality rates, and lower rates of discharge to home compared to those who received elective surgery. These patients were more likely to be socioeconomically disadvantaged and had surgeries performed at hospitals with lower annual case volumes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of cancer stage on perioperative mortality for gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers. It found that after adjusting for other variables, 30-day mortality varied by stage for all cancer types examined, with age being the most strongly associated factor. The study concluded that cancer stage contributes to explaining observed differences in short-term mortality for gastrointestinal cancers.

Summary: In this study, a model based on the Tokyo Guidelines 2018 was developed to predict HIDA scan results for acute cholecystitis. Factors such as gender, age, clinical signs, and ultrasound findings were associated with positive HIDA results. This model could help identify patients who may not need a HIDA scan for diagnosis of AC.

Summary: Adult granulosa cell tumor (GCT) is a rare ovarian tumor that can present with symptoms related to compression and hormone secretion. It grows slowly and has nonspecific clinical manifestations. CT scan can detect related lesions. Prompt surgical exploration and aggressive resuscitation should be performed for patients with suspected intra-abdominal hemorrhage.

Summary: This case report describes a rare case of ruptured endometriomas in a 26-year-old nulligravid female. The patient presented with heavy menses, progressive abdominal distension, and a recent urinary tract infection. CT scan revealed a large multicystic mass in the right pelvis with ascites. Surgical exploration confirmed ruptured pelvic cysts arising from both ovaries, which were benign bilateral endometriomas.
