The spoils of war and the long-term spoiling of health conditions of entire nations

Binder, Jan Boren, Alberico Catapano, Florian Kronenberg, Ziad Mallat, Philippe Moulin, Katariina Oorni, Kausik K. Ray, Jeanine E. Summary: The healthcare system in Ukraine was already facing challenges before the war, but the aggressive war started by Russia will have long-lasting consequences for the health of Ukrainians. Ukrainians have a high risk of noncommunicable diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. Limited access to healthcare and interruptions in the supply of medicines and resources due to the conflict pose a significant health risk. The poorly treated noncommunicable diseases are expected to contribute to a higher mortality rate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Myocardial Perfusion, and Myocardial Blood Flow: A Longitudinal Twin Study

Viola Vaccarino, Amit J. Shah, Valeria Moncayo, Jonathon Nye, Marina Piccinelli, Yi-An Ko, Xin Ma, Nancy Murrah, Lucy Shallenberger, Emily Driggers, Oleksiy M. Douglas Bremner

Summary: This study found an association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and reduced coronary microcirculatory function as well as greater deterioration over time. Twins with chronic, long-standing PTSD had the poorest coronary microcirculatory function, and this association was not confounded by shared environmental or genetic factors.

Obstructive sleep apnea, myocardial perfusion and myocardial blood flow: A study of older male twins

Viola Vaccarino, Amit J. J. Shah, Valeria Moncayo, Jonathon A. A. Nye, Marina Piccinelli, Yi-An Ko, Xin Ma, Nancy Murrah, Lucy Shallenberger, Emily Driggers, Nour Jajeh, Ammer Haffar, Omar Al-Abboud, Paolo Raggi, Martica H. H. Hall, Richard P. P. Sloan, Jack Goldberg, Nicholas L. L. Smith, Ernest V. V. Garcia, Arshed A. A. Quyyumi, J. Douglas Bremner, Donald L. L. Bliwise

Summary: This study found that twins with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) had abnormal myocardial perfusion, suggesting subclinical myocardial scarring or infarction. The risk of abnormal myocardial perfusion was highest in twin pairs where both twins had OSA.

High- vs. Low-Intensity Statin Therapy and Changes in Coronary Artery Calcification Density after One Year

Lukas Hermann Vogel, Iryna Dykun, Paolo Raggi, Axel Schmermund, Tienush Rassaf, Amir Abbas Mahabadi

Summary: There is no significant difference in the effect of high-intensity statin therapy (HIST) and low-to-intermediate intensity statin therapy (LIST) on coronary artery calcification (CAC) density.

Effects of Elective Coronary Revascularization vs Medical Therapy Alone on Noncardiac Mortality A Meta-Analysis

Eliano P. Navarese, Alexandra J. Lansky, Michael E. Farkouh, Klaudyna Grzelakowska, Marc P. Bonaca, Diana A. Gorog, Paolo Raggi, Malte Kelm, Brandon Yeo, Julia Uminska, Nick Curzen, Jacek Kubica, William Wijns, Dean J. Kereiakes

Summary: This study conducted a large-scale meta-analysis to compare the effect of coronary revascularization plus medical therapy (MT) versus MT alone on noncardiac mortality in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). The results showed that there was no significant difference in noncardiac mortality between the two treatment groups in long-term follow-up.

Quantitation of diffuse myocardial ischemia with mental stress and its association with cardiovascular events in individuals with recent myocardial infarction

Summary: Microcirculatory dysfunction during psychological stress may result in diffuse myocardial ischemia. A novel quantification method for diffuse ischemia during mental stress (dMSI) was developed and its relationship with outcomes after a myocardial infarction (MI) was examined. The study found that higher levels of dMSI were associated with an increased risk of adverse events, particularly in women.

Independent Causal Effect of Remnant Cholesterol on Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Outcomes: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Eliano P. Navarese, Donna Vine, Spencer Proctor, Klaudyna Grzelakowska, Sergio Berti, Jacek Kubica, Paolo Raggi

Summary: A large-scale Mendelian randomization study found a significant causal association between remnant cholesterol and cardiovascular outcomes, including coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. The study suggests that early screening for remnant cholesterol and long-term inhibition should be the focus of future therapeutic interventions.
