Influenza vaccine and risk of acute myocardial infarction in a population-based case-control study

Summary: Blood Kallikrein-8 (KLK8) may be an early blood biomarker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Elevated KLK8 levels were observed in individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), a precursor to AD, compared to cognitively unimpaired controls. The study concluded that blood KLK8 showed strong discriminatory potential for differentiating between aMCI and cognitively unimpaired individuals, suggesting its clinical utility as a biomarker for incipient AD.

Summary: Diabetes is associated with a higher risk of death in patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), with increasing prevalence of diabetes over time. Patients with diabetes were older, more often Black, and more commonly women. They had higher comorbidities and presented differently compared to patients without diabetes. They also had lower probabilities of receiving certain therapies and higher 1-year mortality risk.

Interactions of ST-elevation myocardial infarction, age, and sex and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events among Chinese adults: a secondary analysis of a single-centre prospective cohort

Summary: This study evaluated the interaction between ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), ageing, and sex in relation to major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) among Chinese adults. The results showed that female patients with STEMI had a 2.7 times higher risk of MACE compared to male patients without STEMI. Older patients with STEMI had a 3.3 times higher risk of MACE compared to younger patients without STEMI. The study also suggested a positive additive interaction between STEMI and age, as well as between STEMI and sex.

Summary: In individuals with HbA(1c) levels below the diabetes threshold, there is no significant association between HbA(1c) levels of 39 to 41 mmol/mol (5.7%-5.9%) and 42 to 46 mmol/mol (6.0%-6.4%) and overall mortality. The mortality risks for newly detected diabetes (HbA(1c) >= 6.5%) and previously known diabetes vary with the length of follow-up, with weaker associations observed after 4 and 8 years, but stronger associations after 12 years.

Limited access to healthcare and interruptions in the supply of medicines and resources due to the conflict pose a significant health risk. The poorly treated noncommunicable diseases are expected to contribute to a higher mortality rate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: Microcirculatory dysfunction during psychological stress may result in diffuse myocardial ischemia. A novel quantification method for diffuse ischemia during mental stress (dMSI) was developed and its relationship with outcomes after a myocardial infarction (MI) was examined. The study found that higher levels of dMSI were associated with an increased risk of adverse events, particularly in women.
