Summary: Uncommon infections in severely burned patients, such as osteomyelitis, polymicrobial bacteremia, recurrent bacteremia, endocarditis, CNS, and rare fungal infections, are more likely to be caused by gram-negative bacteria or fungi. Clinical presentation differs from non-burn patients, and some infections may require surgical intervention. Effective treatment requires a high index of suspicion, appropriate diagnosis, systemic antimicrobial therapy, and surgical intervention when necessary.

Summary: Accelerometers have been used for monitoring activity in dogs for years, particularly in assessing the efficacy of osteoarthritis treatments. Collar-mounted accelerometers can provide precise measurements but may be challenging to interpret in terms of gait or speed. This study aimed to convert accelerometer measurements from treadmill activities into estimates of speed or gait, with the conclusion that collar-mounted accelerometers are valuable for monitoring overall activity in dogs, but may have limitations in categorizing finer details such as specific gaits or accurate speed estimates.

Summary: This paper presents the views of 779 US residents on the use of therapeutic antibiotics in dairy cattle. An online survey was conducted with open-ended questions to gather qualitative data. Participants were presented with three scenarios of a farmer with a sick cow, each with varying levels of information about antibiotic therapy. Content analysis of the text responses revealed that while many participants supported antibiotic use for treating sick cows, concerns were raised about the potential spread of antibiotic resistance. Participants also emphasized the importance of responsible antibiotic use and reducing antibiotic outflow from farms. The findings may not be generalizable but provide insights for the development of policies and practices that align with societal values regarding antibiotic use in dairy farming.

Summary: This study investigates the effectiveness of biocementation in treating the collapse potential of a well-graded sand. The analysis considers the structural changes experienced by the soil during the treatment, rather than just during service. Tests were carried out on treated and untreated soil samples to study the structural changes due to loading. The presence of biocement bond was confirmed by various tests, and the treatment was found to reduce collapse potential.

Summary: Excessive water production from oil/gas wells in the Permian Basin's unconventional shale formations raises environmental concerns and poses significant expenses for water management programs. By analyzing subsurface data and using a data-driven workflow, this study successfully predicts high water-producing wells in the Delaware Basin using certain statistical parameters computed from resistivity and porosity logs. Logistic regression was found to be the most effective classification method, with median prediction performance scores well above 0.80 for both the Fort Worth and Gulf Coast datasets.

Summary: The study included 481 dogs and 291 cats to determine the effect of urine-specific gravity on using microscopic evaluation of bacteriuria to predict urine culture results. Results showed that urine specific gravity, presence of pyuria, and species all had an impact on the agreement between microscopic bacteriuria and culture results. Samples with rod bacteria were more likely to have bacterial growth compared to cocci, and urine microscopy had high specificity in predicting culture results.

Summary: This study aimed to determine if enrofloxacin and its active metabolite ciprofloxacin have reduced clearance in cats with reduced kidney function. The results showed that body weight was the only covariate affecting the volume of distribution and clearance of total fluoroquinolone, while kidney function did not have a significant effect on total fluoroquinolone clearance. Therefore, dosage adjustment of enrofloxacin is not necessary for azotemic cats.
