Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between preoperative psychiatric morbidities and 30-day postoperative mortality in South Korea. The study included all patients who underwent curative cancer surgery from 2002 to 2019. The results showed that preoperative psychiatric morbidities were associated with a higher 30-day mortality rate, especially in breast, lung, and kidney cancer patients.

Summary: A study conducted in Sweden showed that patients diagnosed with celiac disease in the 21st century have an increased risk of serious infections, particularly encapsulated bacterial infections, sepsis, and gastrointestinal infections. Mucosal healing during follow-up did not decrease the risk of subsequent serious infections, highlighting the importance of considering vaccinations during CD care.

Summary: Population-based data in Sweden showed that all histological stages of NAFLD were linked with significantly increased overall mortality, and the risk escalated progressively with worsening histology. Excess mortality was mainly attributed to extrahepatic cancer and cirrhosis, while cardiovascular disease and HCC made modest contributions.

Summary: This study evaluates the characteristics of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its impact on morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetic subjects in a community setting. The results show that diabetes significantly increases the risk of NAFLD and advanced fibrosis in diabetic patients. Furthermore, the presence of NAFLD in diabetic subjects is associated with an increased risk of severe liver-related events, cardiovascular disease, and overall mortality. The severity of fibrosis also correlates with an increased risk of hepatic and extrahepatic complications. These findings provide real-world evidence of the clinical and economic burden of NAFLD in diabetic subjects.

Summary: This study found that the association between admission hyperglycemia and early vascular outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) varied depending on stroke subtype. The interaction analysis showed significant differences in 3-month stroke and the composite of stroke, MI, and all-cause mortality between hyperglycemia groups and stroke subtypes. Recurrence risk was highest in the cardioembolism (CE) subtype, intermediate in the large artery atherothrombosis (LAA) subtype, and lowest in the small vessel occlusion (SVO) subtype.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the association between fenofibrate added to statin therapy and diabetic retinopathy progression. Using a propensity-matched study design, patients with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome receiving statin therapy were divided into a statin plus fenofibrate group and a statin-only group. The addition of fenofibrate to statins was associated with significantly lower risk of diabetic retinopathy progression.

Summary: The goal of this study is to determine whether a longer duration of dual antiplatelet therapy with clopidogrel-aspirin can reduce the risk of recurrent vascular events in patients with large artery atherosclerotic (LAA) stroke subtype. This is a multicenter, prospective, randomized study comparing the efficacy and safety of a 12-month duration of DAPT versus a 3-month duration of DAPT in LAA stroke subtype patients. The results of this study will help stroke physicians determine the appropriate duration of dual therapy for LAA stroke subtype patients.

Summary: Chemotherapy-induced cachexia, independent of cancer, reduces the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy and causes metabolic abnormalities. The mechanism underlying this condition remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of cytarabine (CYT) on energy balance in mice and found that CYT-induced cachexia was associated with reductions in weight gain, fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, grip strength, and nocturnal energy expenditure. CYT inhibited lipid uptake in the intestine, resulting in decreased serum triglyceride levels. This inhibition was not associated with intestinal damage but was instead due to increased zipper-like junctions of lymphatic endothelial vessels in the duodenal villi.
