Summary: This multicenter cohort study in Japan evaluated the effectiveness of physicians' presence in pre-hospital settings for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. The study found a significantly improved one-month favorable neurological survival rate when physicians were present in pre-hospital settings compared to when they were absent.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the attitudes and ongoing needs of healthcare staff towards telehealth after its rapid implementation. The survey results showed that the majority of clinicians and managers considered telehealth to be important and safe. However, they also recognized that telehealth was not the same as face-to-face care, but could easily be integrated into usual work arrangements. The most common enablers of telehealth included having others use the same platform and completing training, while reliable internet connectivity, the right equipment, and a private area were identified as the main barriers. These findings highlight the importance of addressing the specific needs and concerns of healthcare staff to promote the uptake of telehealth in different settings.

Summary: This study investigated the association between insulin administration method and blood glucose control as well as neurological outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors with hyperglycemia. The results showed that there was no association between insulin administration method and achievement of target blood glucose level or neurological outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and survival rates of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) in the Japanese working population over a 12-year period, finding that while the incidence of OHCAs remained constant, the prognosis improved each year. Patients with work-colleague bystanders had the highest survival rates, and reducing the time to initial defibrillation could further improve outcomes for OHCA patients.

Summary: This study provides epidemiological data on the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and management of hypertensive urgencies and emergencies in an emergency department. Stress, increased salt intake, and medication non-adherence were identified as main triggers. Patients with urgencies commonly presented with dizziness and headache, while those with emergencies often showed symptoms of dyspnea and chest pain.

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of teaching CPR and AED through a flipped classroom and to investigate the long-term retention of knowledge and practical skills among high school students. The results showed that the flipped classroom was as effective as traditional training in teaching key skills and could be completed in a shorter time.

Summary: The study aimed to identify the capabilities and willingness of hospitals in New England to respond to disaster health crises, in order to guide future implementation. The survey results showed that most hospitals and emergency departments have access to emergency notification systems, teleconsultation with experts, disaster credentialing requirements, reliable internet service, and willingness to use a disaster teleconsultation system. However, there are still issues with communication service instability and technological limitations in rural areas and some smaller hospitals.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for telehealth and home care surged. A new home ECG testing model was developed and successfully used in clinical practice. Through mail delivery of ECG testing kits, most patients were able to complete the tests and upload clinically quality ECGs to their clinicians' online accounts, demonstrating the reliability of this care model.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the epidemiology and clinical features of patients presenting to the ED with suspected and confirmed COVID-19. Data from eight sites across Victoria and Tasmania in July 2020 showed that 9.6% of patients underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing, with 2% returning a positive result. There was no significant association found between SARS-CoV-2 infection and death or mechanical ventilation in hospital.

Summary: During Australia's 'second wave', a substantial proportion of ED presentations required SARS-CoV-2 testing and isolation. Presence of SARS-CoV-2 on nasopharyngeal swab was associated with an increase in the odds of death and mechanical ventilation in hospital.

Summary: The study aimed to describe characteristics and outcomes of Australian ED patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 in 2020 and determine predictors of in-hospital death for SARS-CoV-2 positive patients. Findings showed that SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were more likely to require mechanical ventilation and experience in-hospital death compared to SARS-CoV-2 negative patients. Age, higher triage category, obesity, and receiving immunosuppressive treatment were identified as the strongest predictors of in-hospital death for SARS-CoV-2 positive patients.
