Summary: This study evaluated the incidence and potential risk factors for postoperative hypoparathyroidism after thyroid surgical procedures in a single high-volume center. The results showed that young patients undergoing neck dissection and with incidental parathyroidectomy have the highest risk of postoperative hypoparathyroidism.

Summary: The study revealed changes in trace elements in thyroid disease patients and suggested that certain element ratios could serve as blood markers for disease discrimination. Significant differences in the levels of certain elements in pathological blood samples compared to control samples were found, indicating the potential for new circulating screening markers.

Summary: The IGF pathway plays important regulatory roles in the development, growth, and function of human tissues, intersecting with pathways mediating the actions of various cytokines, growth factors, and hormones. IGF-I influences thyroid function and can impact the effects of growth hormone and thyroid hormones on target tissues. The pathway is also involved in both normal thyroid function and pathological conditions, such as benign enlargement and tumorigenesis, as well as conditions like acromegaly. Additionally, IGF-IR has been found overexpressed in orbital connective tissues in Graves' disease and thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy, leading to the development of therapeutic medications like teprotumumab.

Summary: This study found that the higher the sphericity of a thyroid nodule, as indicated by its long to short ratio, the greater the risk of malignancy. This association was independent of age, sex, and nodule size. Incorporating the sphericity of nodules into risk stratification systems may improve individualized clinical decision making.

Summary: This nationwide, population-based study of 1,382,560 Israeli adolescents found that thyroid disorders diagnosed during adolescence are a risk factor for early-onset type 2 diabetes. The increased risk of diabetes was consistent across gender, presence or absence of obesity, and different types of thyroid disorders.

Summary: This study evaluated the frequency and risk of malignancy of TSHR mutations in indeterminate thyroid nodules. The results showed that the TSHRpI568T mutation had a high benign rate, but a significant risk of malignancy in suspicious samples. These findings may have implications for the treatment and monitoring of patients with TSHR mutated nodules.

Summary: This study examines the effectiveness of using the taller-than-wide (TTW) criterion for sonographic assessment of thyroid nodules in iodine-deficient areas. The results show that TTW nodules are common in these areas, often located in the dorsal half of the thyroid gland and associated with a protrusion-like formation (horn). These nodules are predominantly benign.

Summary: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare and aggressive disease with a poor prognosis. Old age, low education level, and history of multinodular goiter seem to be the risk factors for ATC, while the role of smoking and blood group is uncertain. Individuals with a history of multinodular goiter may require more aggressive treatment choices, but the low incidence of ATC in most thyroid surgical departments makes this point questionable, emphasizing the need for further research.

Summary: This study found a correlation between TSH levels and thyroid diseases in Chinese adults, with low TSH levels associated with an increased risk of TN and GR, while high TSH levels were associated with thyroid antibody positivity. The research suggests that adults with TSH levels at upper or lower limits of the normal range should be regularly reviewed.

Similarly, BMI was not predictive of aggressive thyroid cancer. The correlation between nodule size and increased BMI requires further validation.

Summary: We describe a case of a pediatric female patient with Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome (BRRS) and congenital hypothyroidism (CH) carrying homozygous mutation of the TPO gene. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy at the age of seven years due to the development of multinodular goiter. This case highlights the possible synergic role of coexisting mutation of both TPO and PTEN in the development of multinodular goiter, emphasizing the importance of tailored surveillance program in these patients, especially during childhood.

Summary: Introduction: Prescription opioids, including those prescribed after surgery, have greatly contributed to the US opioid epidemic. Educating opioid prescribers is a crucial component of ensuring the safe use of opioids among surgical patients. This study implemented an annual education curriculum for new surgical prescribers, resulting in significant improvements in knowledge and comfort levels. However, there remains a persistent knowledge and comfort gap among these prescribers.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using humanized anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibodies conjugated with near-infrared dyes to specifically label gastric cancers in mouse models. Orthotopic models showed bright and specific labeling with more than ten times higher tumor-to-background ratios compared to the control. This tumor-specific fluorescent antibody has promising potential as a clinical tool for improving visualization of gastric cancer margins during surgical resection.

Summary: This scoping review analyzed the literature on the use of broadband personality tests in the bariatric surgical population to optimize weight loss outcomes. The study found significant associations between personality scales and weight loss, but inconsistent reporting of outcome measures made it challenging to draw concrete conclusions. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommends standardization of outcome reporting to improve the reliability of predicting weight loss outcomes.
