Summary: Based on the research findings, it was discovered that male patients accounted for a higher percentage of burn admissions, scald was the most prominent cause of burns in all cohort subgroups, burns were more likely to occur during weekends, and the transition seasons of spring and autumn were the most dangerous for the cohort.

Summary: Severe burn-induced inflammation and subsequent hypermetabolic response can result in infection, sepsis, and multiple organ failure, posing high mortality risks for patients. Restoring immune balance, particularly through modulation of the CNS-spleen axis, has shown promising benefits in improving clinical outcomes. Targeting the CNS-spleen axis to regulate inflammation appears to be crucial for recovery in burn patients and other hyperinflammatory conditions.

Summary: This study evaluated the outcomes of pediatric patients with a combination of burn and trauma injuries. The results showed that the combined group had longer hospital stays, longer ICU stays, and more ventilator days compared to the burn only group. The odds of mortality were significantly higher for the combined group compared to the burn only group. Thus, the addition of trauma to burn injuries was associated with increased mortality risk and longer hospitalization.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the epidemiology, complications, and management of ocular-periocular burns. The study found that burns commonly occurred at work and home, and corneal burns were more severe in chemical burns. Medical treatment was the main approach, with additional surgical treatment performed in some cases. Corneal scars were the most common complication.

Summary: This article reviewed the recent literature on the use of antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) in trauma patients. The study found that AP can be effective in reducing infection complications in certain cases. However, there is still controversy and uncertainty regarding the use of AP in other situations, which requires further research.

Summary: Superficial and cutaneous aspergillosis is a rare fungal disease that primarily affects the outer layers of the skin, nails, and the outer auditory canal, especially in immunocompromised patients. These fungal infections are typically acquired through traumatic inoculation or inhalation of fungal spores. Lesions are categorized into otomycosis, onychomycosis, and cutaneous aspergillosis.

Summary: To evaluate the efficacy of one-step acellular dermis combined with autologous split thickness skin grafting in the treatment of burn or trauma wounds by a multicenter controlled study. In patients with extensive burns, it is even difficult to repair the wounds due to the shortage of autologous skin. The traditional skin grafting method has disadvantages such as large damage to the donor site, insufficient skin source, and unsatisfactory appearance, wear resistance, and elasticity of the wound tissue after skin grafting.

Summary: The study found that for-profit trauma centers charge more and have longer length of stay compared to non-profit centers, while government centers have lower charges and longer length of stay. Patients with mild/moderate femur, tibial, or rib fractures had higher charges and longer length of stay when presenting at for-profit trauma centers compared to government or non-profit centers. There were no differences in overall complication rates among the different types of centers.

Targeting ATGL may reduce adipose tissue changes and improve patient outcomes, as demonstrated by selective ATGL inhibitor studies.

Summary: This study aims to examine the clinical characteristics and epidemiology of pediatric burns in central China. The results showed that scalds, flames, contact, and chemicals are the main causes of burns among children aged 1-5 years in this region. The study also found that electric burns, although representing a relatively small proportion, are more likely to lead to disabilities or death. Various prevention strategies should be employed depending upon the cause of the burn.

Summary: This study analyzed the outcomes of pediatric patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) who were managed with a protocol involving simple aspiration and, if necessary, Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS). The results showed that 33% of patients were successfully treated with aspiration alone, while 66% required VATS. Simple aspiration is a safe and effective initial management for children with PSP, but VATS may be necessary in most cases.

Educating opioid prescribers is a crucial component of ensuring the safe use of opioids among surgical patients. This study implemented an annual education curriculum for new surgical prescribers, resulting in significant improvements in knowledge and comfort levels. However, there remains a persistent knowledge and comfort gap among these prescribers.

Summary: This scoping review analyzed the literature on the use of broadband personality tests in the bariatric surgical population to optimize weight loss outcomes. The study found significant associations between personality scales and weight loss, but inconsistent reporting of outcome measures made it challenging to draw concrete conclusions.
