Summary: The study investigated the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in ischemic and non-ischemic skeletal muscle in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The results showed that preoperative VEGF levels were significantly higher in ischemic muscles compared to controls, and postoperative values decreased significantly. There was no significant change in VEGF levels in the non-ischemic muscle. This suggests impaired angiogenesis mechanisms in PAD patients.

Summary: A potential heparan sulfate (HS) ligand was discovered to target several growth factors using specific HS tetrasaccharide ligands. One tetrasaccharide ligand showed strong binding with the VEGF(165) growth factor, and in vitro experiments demonstrated the therapeutic potential of these synthetic HS ligands by inhibiting vascular endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis in the presence of VEGF(165) and the specific tetrasaccharides.

Summary: Angiogenesis plays a crucial role in embryologic development, growth, and tissue repair, but dysregulation of this process is a hallmark of various pathologies, including cancer. Existing methods for evaluating cell vascular formation are often limited to static analysis, leading to bias. Researchers have developed code scripts to study the dynamic angiogenesis process, allowing for the screening of drugs that can affect various parameters of vascular formation. Animal experiments have confirmed the efficacy of these drugs in inhibiting blood vessel formation, providing a new perspective for angiogenesis research and drug development.

Summary: Endothelial dysfunction is a central characteristic of cardiovascular pathogenesis in diabetes mellitus, characterized by impaired eNOS and NO bioavailability. This study identified the role of CaM in the dysfunction of eNOS in diabetes. Downregulated CaM expression was found to be responsible for endothelial injury and impaired angiogenesis in diabetes. The findings provide a novel mechanism and target for protecting against diabetic endothelial injury.

Summary: Maternal hyperglycemia induced by GDM has detrimental effects on fetal vascular development, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in offspring. Altered gene expression and epigenetic changes in fetal EPCs contribute to the impaired angiogenic function. Increased PCDH10 expression and hypomethylation of the PCDH10 promoter are associated with this dysfunction.

Summary: Endothelial dysfunction in fetuses of women with gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with subsequent cardiovascular events. This study assessed fetal vascular endothelial function in GDM patients using color M-mode derived aortic propagation velocity (APV) and found a significant correlation between APV and vWF levels. The novel metric of APV could aid in early recognition of vascular functional alterations and potential risk factor surveillance and modification.

Summary: Introduction: Prescription opioids, including those prescribed after surgery, have greatly contributed to the US opioid epidemic. Educating opioid prescribers is a crucial component of ensuring the safe use of opioids among surgical patients. This study implemented an annual education curriculum for new surgical prescribers, resulting in significant improvements in knowledge and comfort levels. However, there remains a persistent knowledge and comfort gap among these prescribers.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of using humanized anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibodies conjugated with near-infrared dyes to specifically label gastric cancers in mouse models. Orthotopic models showed bright and specific labeling with more than ten times higher tumor-to-background ratios compared to the control. This tumor-specific fluorescent antibody has promising potential as a clinical tool for improving visualization of gastric cancer margins during surgical resection.

Summary: This scoping review analyzed the literature on the use of broadband personality tests in the bariatric surgical population to optimize weight loss outcomes. The study found significant associations between personality scales and weight loss, but inconsistent reporting of outcome measures made it challenging to draw concrete conclusions. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommends standardization of outcome reporting to improve the reliability of predicting weight loss outcomes.
