Summary: A recent study evaluated the trends in esophagectomy and found that minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgeries have become the dominant approach. While these approaches have higher rates of complications, there is no significant difference in operative mortality. Further studies are needed to assess long-term outcomes and cancer treatment effects.

Summary: This study used the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data set to describe the incidence and impact of Clostridioides difficile infection in adult patients after appendectomy. The results showed that patients with Clostridioides difficile infection were more likely to have certain risk factors and experienced worse postoperative outcomes with higher mortality rates.

Summary: For patients requiring esophagectomy, reconstruction using the stomach or colon can restore function but is associated with high morbidity. This study compared outcomes between gastric pull-up (GPU) and colonic interposition (CI) and found that differences in outcomes appear to be due to underlying frailty of patients rather than the procedure itself.

Summary: Intestinal-cutaneous fistulas (ICFs) are a major surgical challenge associated with significant morbidity, particularly post-operative infectious complications. Emergency repair is linked to a higher mortality rate compared to elective repair.

Summary: The objective of this study was to examine the morbidity and mortality associated with bronchoscopy for pediatric airway foreign body (AFB) and identify factors associated with adverse events. The study found that the morbidity is low in children undergoing bronchoscopy for AFB, and mortality is usually associated with preoperative lifesaving maneuvers.

Summary: This study used ACS NSQIP data to examine the effects of neuraxial anesthesia and general anesthesia on morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. The findings indicate that neuraxial anesthesia is associated with lower risks of postoperative adverse events compared to general anesthesia.

Summary: Esophagectomy for malignant disease is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Preoperative cardiopulmonary fitness has been shown to be linked with postoperative outcomes. This study found that the ventilatory equivalent for carbon dioxide (VE/VCO2) at the anaerobic threshold was independently predictive of long-term survival in patients undergoing esophagectomy.

Summary: The study found that decreased preoperative serum albumin levels are associated with increased mortality and morbidity after groin hernia repair. Lower serum albumin levels are also associated with longer length of stay and higher 30-day readmission rates.

Summary: This study aimed to reconstruct the cervical-thoracic junction plane (CTJP) using a three-dimensional reconstruction system and analyze the relationship between the distance from the intersection of the right subclavian artery and the CTJP to the origin of the right subclavian artery (ORSA) and the patient's sex, BMI and height. The results showed that this technique can assist in accurately distinguishing lymph nodes and staging middle-thoracic esophageal cancer in minimally invasive surgery.

Summary: Open thoracoabdominal aortic surgery carries significant risk to life, which is related to age, extent of aortic replacement, timing of surgery, and left ventricular function. Morbidity is considerable. Understanding these risks is fundamental for patient selection and the consent process of potential candidates for surgery, particularly in the elderly.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the outcomes of TEVAR for patients with thoracic aortic disease at a high complexity. Statistical and multivariate analyses showed that increased intraoperative blood loss and male sex were related to mortality. Underweight patients had a higher risk of complications and endoleak. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these results.

Summary: This study compared the postoperative morbidity, mortality, and length of hospital stay between hybrid minimally-invasive esophagectomy (HMIE) and open esophagectomy (OE). The results showed that HMIE had significantly shorter hospital stay and lower incidence and severity of postoperative complications compared to OE. Therefore, HMIE is a feasible surgical technique that can effectively reduce postoperative complications while ensuring good oncological resection.

Summary: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons General Thoracic Surgery Database (STS GTSD) is the largest and most robust thoracic surgical database globally. Participating sites receive risk-adjusted performance reports for benchmarking and quality improvement. The GTSD also provides mechanisms for high-quality clinical research, utilizing data from 274 participant sites and 781,000 procedures since 2002. The database undergoes annual random audits to ensure completeness and accuracy, while the data collection process has been refined to maximize fidelity and reduce entry burden. The STS Workforce on National Databases supports a research program based on the GTSD, resulting in eight scholarly publications in 2021.
