In this work, three types of nonionic surfactant as corrosion inhibitors were synthesized. The chemical structure of the prepared inhibitors was confirmed using FT-IR and H-1-NMR spectroscopy. The surface tension and thermodynamic properties of these inhibitors were investigated. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of these surfactants was investigated on a carbon steel surface in 1 M HCl solution by weight loss and electrochemical measurements. Untreated and treated steel surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Results show that the inhibition efficiency of the prepared inhibitors increases with increasing the ethylene oxide units. Also, the potentiodynamic polarization curves indicated that the investigated inhibitors behave as a mixed type inhibitor. Adsorption of these surfactants on the carbon steel surface was found to obey Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The computed quantum chemical properties viz., electron affinity (EA), highest occupied molecular orbital (E (HOMO)), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (E (LUMO)), energy gap Delta E = E (HOMO) - E (LUMO), dipole moment (mu), polarizability and total energy (E (T)) show good correlation with experimental inhibition efficiency.

Summary: This paper focuses on the fabrication of new superhydrophobic nanocomposite coating materials for corrosion protection of petroleum pipelines. The study used batch emulsification polymerization technique to prepare three hydrophobic copolymers and sol-gel method to prepare SiO2 nanoparticles. The SiO2 nanoparticles were functionalized to enhance their hydrophobicity and then incorporated into the copolymer to fabricate three superhydrophobic nanocomposites. The highest contact angle and corrosion efficiency were achieved by the M5 nanocomposite.

Theoretical and electrochemical evaluation of tetra-cationic surfactant as corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in 1 M HCl

A. Elaraby, Shrouk. Abd El-Samad, Eman. A. Khamis, E. G. Zaki

Summary: Recently, the role of surfactants in carbon steel corrosion protection has been studied. In this study, a newly synthesized tetra-cationic surfactant (CS4) based on a Schiff-base compound was evaluated for its anti-corrosion properties. The CS4 compound exhibited good surface-active property and acted as a mixed-type inhibitor by blocking both the anodic and cathodic sites. The inhibitive effect of CS4 was confirmed through various spectroscopic and theoretical methods.

Summary: Two novel Schiff base polymers (PSB1 and PSB2) with extra-high protective barrier features were prepared and applied as corrosion inhibitors in sour corrosive media of petroleum environments containing H2S gas. The inhibitive action of the polymers on carbon steel was studied using various corrosion testing methods. PSB2 exhibited better performance than PSB1 in electrochemical testing, showing high inhibition efficiencies at different temperatures. These poly Schiff bases showed promising potential as corrosion inhibitors in sour environments, providing a sustainable solution for future environmental protection.
