Due to the potential use of amines as co-surfactants in microemulsions, the effect of adding alkylamines (C-4-C8NH2) on the aggregation properties of cationic gemini surfactants [pentanediyl-1, 5-bis(dimethylcetylammonium bromide) and hexanediyl-1, 6-bis(dimethylcetylammonium bromide), referred to as 16-5-16 and 16-6-16 compounds] has been studied using tensiometry at 303 K. Data on critical micelle concentration (CMC), the surface properties C-20 (the surfactant concentration required to reduce the surface tension by 20 mN/m), Gamma(max) (maximum surface excess), Amin (minimum surface area per molecule) evaluated from the surface tension versus surfactant concentration plot, the interaction parameters beta(sigma) (for mixed monolayer formation at the aqueous solution/air interface), and beta(m) (for mixed micelle formation in aqueous medium) are reported. A synergistic interaction was observed both in the micelle as well as at interface, as evident from interaction parameters. Theoretical models of Clint, Rubingh and Rosen were used to explain and compare the results. More synergistic interaction was observed in 16-5-16 as compared to 16-6-16. The CMC values of 16-s-16 (s = 5, 6) decreased with increasing amine concentrations and the extent of the effect followed the sequence: octylamine > heptylamine > hexylamine > pentylamine > butylamine.

Solvatochromic behaviour of coumarin 102 in PEGs + ionic liquid/water solutions: Role of solute-solvent or solvent-solvent interactions

Md Rabiul Islam, Faiz Warsi, Md Sayem Alam, Maroof Ali

Summary: Ionic liquids and their binary mixtures with judiciously selected co-solvents have been found to exhibit superior physicochemical properties, making them novel solvents for various technological applications. The solvation behavior of [bmim][Tf2N] + PEGs mixtures on the UV-vis and fluorescence response of C-102 dye has been studied, revealing interesting solvatochromic behavior. Further analysis using Bosch solvation model and multiparameter approach has provided insights into the solvatochromic behavior of C-102 in binary mixtures of IL/PEGs.

Influence of an anionic hydrotrope on thermophysical properties of an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate

Sumitha Kanniappan Rajendran, Julfikar Hassan Mondal, Md. Sayem Alam

Summary: The micellization behavior of anionic surfactant in aqueous medium was investigated, along with the effect of anionic hydrotrope. The results showed that the critical micelle concentration of the surfactant decreased with increasing hydrotrope concentration. The interactions between the hydrotrope and surfactant were found to be synergistic. Thermodynamic parameters of micellization were calculated and the non-covalent interactions in the mixed surfactant-hydrotrope systems were revealed using experimental techniques.

The micellization studies of cationic gemini surfactant, hexanediyl-1,6-bis(dimethylcetylammonium bromide solutions by conductometric, tensiometric, dye solubilisation, FTIR and 1H NMR: The influence of adenosine and temperature

Md. Sayem Alam, A. Mohammed Siddiq, Maroof Ali

Summary: This study reports the effect of adenosine and temperature on the micellization of a cationic gemini surfactant. The results show that the addition of adenosine increases the critical micelle concentration (CMC), and increasing temperature also leads to an increase in CMC. The evaluated energetics indicate lower stability of the surfactant solution in the presence of adenosine. Further analysis confirms that there is no chemical reaction during the interaction between the gemini surfactant and adenosine.

The Interaction of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate with 4,5-Dihydroxy-1,3-Benzenedisulfonate Hydrotrope: Micellization, Surface Properties, and Thermodynamics

Sumitha Kanniappan Rajendran, Julfikar Hassan Mondal, Md Sayem Alam

Summary: The study investigates the interaction between SDS and DHB, as well as the effect of temperature and concentration on mixed systems. The critical micelle concentration of SDS changes with temperature and DHB concentration, while the density and viscosity of the mixed systems decrease with increasing temperature. Synergistic effects are observed in the mixed surfactant-hydrotrope systems. Characterization is done through FTIR and NMR spectroscopic studies.

The physicochemical and thermophysical properties of sodium dodecyl sulfate: The influence of p-toluene sulfonyl chloride and temperature

Sumitha Kanniappan Rajendran, A. Mohammed Siddiq, Md. Sayem Alam

Summary: In this study, the interaction between a hydrotrope, p-toluene sulfonyl chloride (p-TSC), and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), was investigated using various measurements. The results showed that the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS increases with the concentration of p-TSC, and at higher concentrations, reverse micelles are formed. The physicochemical properties of the pure and mixed systems were analyzed using FTIR and 1H NMR, and no covalent bond formation was observed. Density, dynamic viscosity, and kinematic viscosity of the systems were also reported.
