Tessitore, A, Perroni, F, Cortis, C, Meeusen, R, Lupo, C, and Capranica, L. Coordination of soccer players during preseason training. J Strength Cond Res 25(11): 3059-3069, 2011-This study aimed to verify whether coordination improves as a result of a preseason soccer training. During 5 experimental sessions (days 1, 6, 11, 15, and 19), 16 semiprofessional male soccer players (22.0 +/- 3.6 years) were administered 3 specific soccer tests (speed dribbling, shooting a dead ball, and shooting from a pass) and an interlimb coordination test (total duration of a trial: 60 seconds), consisting of isodirectional and nonisodirectional synchronized (1:1 ratio) hand and foot flexions and extensions at an increasing velocity of execution (80, 120, and 180 b.min(-1)). Furthermore, subjective ratings were monitored to assess the recovery state (RestQ) of the players, their perceived exertion (rating of perceived exertion [RPE]) for the whole body, and the perceived muscle pain (rating of muscle pain [RMP]) for the lower limbs and the internal training load by means of the session-RPE method. The ratios between post and pretraining RPE and RMP increased only during the first 2 experimental sessions and decreased after the second week of the training camp (p = 0.001). The Rest-Q showed increases (p < 0.05) for general stress, conflict/pressure, social recovery, and being in shape dimensions. Conversely, decreases (p < 0.05) were observed for social stress, fatigue, physical complaints dimensions. Throughout the preseason, the players improved their speed dribbling (p = 0.03), Shooting from a Pass (p = 0.02), and interlimb coordination (p < 0.0001) performances. These coordination tests succeeded in discriminating coordination in soccer players and could integrate field test batteries during the whole soccer season, because they were easily and inexpensively administrable by coaches.

Sex differences in muscle quality of firefighter recruits: a new exploratory approach to evaluation

Fabrizio Perroni, Ludovica Cardinali, Lamberto Cignitti, Stefano Amatori, Marco B. L. Rocchi, Vilberto Stocchi, Giovanni Piccoli, Carlo Baldari, Davide Sisti, Laura Guidetti, Mario Vetrano, Sveva M. Nusca

Summary: This study analyzed the body composition of Italian firefighters and found that poor body composition may increase the risk of cardiac events and reduce functional capacity. The study also found that fitness values could predict muscle quality in firefighters, which is important for promoting a healthy lifestyle among firefighters.

Injury incidence and risk factors in youth soccer players: a systematic literature review. Part II: Intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors

Mauro Mandorino, Antonio J. Figueiredo, Masar Gjaka, Antonio Tessitore

Summary: The objective of this study was to review the risk factors for injury in young soccer players. After searching electronic databases, articles meeting the inclusion criteria were selected for review. Risk factor data were extracted and grouped into intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The main findings include the importance of neuromuscular control, the impact of maturation status, the contribution of fatigue and poor recovery to overuse injuries, the unclear role of anthropometric factors, the increased risk associated with previous injuries and high skill levels, the influence of external workloads, and the greater injury risk from playing position and sport specialization in young soccer players. Understanding the complex interaction between these factors is crucial for identifying high-risk players, developing effective prevention strategies, and taking a holistic approach.

Acute Effects of Fitlight Training on Cognitive-Motor Processes in Young Basketball Players

Fioretta Silvestri, Matteo Campanella, Maurizio Bertollo, Maicon Rodrigues Albuquerque, Valerio Bonavolonta, Fabrizio Perroni, Carlo Baldari, Laura Guidetti, Davide Curzi

Summary: This study investigated whether a massed basketball training program enriched with Fitlight training can improve executive function (EF) and motor performance. The results showed that three weeks of massed basketball training improved EF and motor performance in young players. The additional Fitlight training increased perceived cognitive effort, but did not further improve EF.

Effects of Playing Position and Contextual Factors on Internal Match Loads, Post-Match Recovery and Well-Being Responses of Elite Male Water Polo Players

Andrea Perazzetti, Milivoj Dopsaj, Pierpaolo Sansone, Mauro Mandorino, Antonio Tessitore

Summary: This study investigates the effects of playing position and contextual factors on the internal match load, players' perceived recovery, and well-being of water polo players. The results show that match outcomes, travel duration, and goals scored are associated with the internal match load, while match balance, playing time, and goals scored are related to players' recovery and well-being.

The Most Active Child Is Not Always the Fittest: Physical Activity and Fitness Are Weakly Correlated

Corrado Lupo, Paolo De Pasquale, Gennaro Boccia, Alexandru Nicolae Ungureanu, Paolo Moise, Anna Mulasso, Paolo Riccardo Brustio

Summary: This cross-sectional study in Italian children aimed to assess the impact of physical activity level (PA) on physical fitness, while controlling for individual characteristics. The study found significant relationships between PA and physical fitness tests, except for sit-and-reach from BMI. However, these relationships are influenced by individual characteristics such as gender, age, and BMI.

Risks and Benefits of Judo Training for Middle-Aged and Older People: A Systematic Review

Federico Palumbo, Simone Ciaccioni, Flavia Guidotti, Roberta Forte, Attilio Sacripanti, Laura Capranica, Antonio Tessitore

Summary: This systematic overview aimed to review studies investigating the benefits and risks of judo training in older people, and to explore practical methodological applications. A total of 23 records meeting the inclusion criteria were identified through searches of EBSCOhost, ISI-WoS, and Scopus databases. The quality assessment revealed a serious risk of bias in 70% of the experimental studies, while all observational studies and 67% of the methodological studies presented a fair quality.

A Systematic Review on the Physical, Physiological, Perceptual, and Technical-Tactical Demands of Official 3 x 3 Basketball Games

Pierpaolo Sansone, Daniele Conte, Antonio Tessitore, Ermanno Rampinini, Davide Ferioli

Summary: This systematic review examines the physical, physiological, perceptual, and technical-tactical demands of official 3 x 3 basketball games. The study finds that 3 x 3 basketball games have an intermittent profile with short ball possessions and considerable physical and physiological demands. The performance profile is similar in males and females, with minor changes across tournament phases. Key indicators for discriminating winning and losing teams include shooting and defensive efficiency, turnovers, and tactical actions involving more players.
