The erosion and transport of sediments allow us to understand many activities of significance, such as crust evolution, climate change, uplift rates, continental processes, the biogeochemical cycling of pollutants and nutrients. The Amazon basin of Peru has contrasting physiographic and climatic characteristics between the Andean piedmont and the plains and between the north and south of the basin which is why there are 8 gauging stations located along the principal rivers of the Andean piedmont (Maranon, Huallaga, Ucayali) and the plain (Maranon, Tigre, Napo, Ucayali and Amazon rivers). Since 2003, the ORE-Hybam (IRD-SENAMHI-UNALM) observatory has performed out regular measurements at strategic points of the Amazon basin to understand and model the systems, behavior and long-term dynamics. On the Andean piedmont, the suspended yields are governed by a simple model with a relationship between the river discharge and the sediment concentration. In the plain, the dilution effect of the concentrations can create hysteresis in this relationship on a monthly basis. The Amazon basin of Peru has a sediment yield of 541 *10(6) t year(-1), 70% comes from the southern basin. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Evolution of the riverine nutrient export to the Tropical Atlantic over the last 15 years: is there a link with Sargassum proliferation?

Julien Jouanno, Jean-Sebastien Moquet, Leo Berline, Marie-Helene Radenac, William Santini, Thomas Changeux, Thierry Thibaut, Witold Podlejski, Frederic Menard, Jean-Michel Martinez, Olivier Aumont, Julio Sheinbaum, Naziano Filizola, Guy Dieudonne Moukandi N'Kaya

Summary: In recent years, there has been a massive proliferation of Sargassum in the Tropical Atlantic, but there is no clear evidence to suggest a significant increase in nutrient fluxes from rivers or that hydrological changes are the primary drivers of Sargassum proliferation. Observations also indicate a decrease in phytoplankton biomass in major Atlantic river plumes over the past two decades, highlighting the need for a better understanding of the nutrient sources sustaining Sargassum and phytoplankton growth in the region.

Investigating δ13C values in stalagmites from tropical South America for the last two millennia

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the influence of local hydroclimate, altitude, temperature, and vegetation types on the delta C-13 values in stalagmites. The results show that the main factors influencing delta C-13 values are associated with the local hydroclimate, and there is a significant correlation between delta C-13 and delta O-18 values in most records.

Performance of Bedload Sediment Transport Formulas Applied to the Lower Minnesota River

Elisa Armijos, Gustavo H. Merten, Joel T. Groten, Christopher A. Ellison, Luke U. Lisiecki

Summary: Although formulas are preferred over field data collection and analysis for bedload transport due to cost and time constraints, the performance of these formulas is dependent on the hydraulic and sedimentological conditions of the site. In this study, nine bedload transport formulas were evaluated using field measurements from the Lower Minnesota River and two tributaries, resulting in the derivation of provisional equations based on power functions for estimating bedload discharge. However, the formulas calculated higher bedload rates compared to the measured values due to site-specific physical characteristics and sampling uncertainties.

The Role of the Rainfall Variability in the Decline of the Surface Suspended Sediment in the Upper Madeira Basin (2003-2017)

Irma Ayes Rivera, Jorge Molina-Carpio, Jhan Carlo Espinoza, Omar Gutierrez-Cori, Wilmar L. Ceron, Frederic Frappart, Elisa Armijos Cardenas, Raul Espinoza-Villar, Jose Max Ayala, Naziano Filizola

Summary: The decrease in suspended sediment concentration (SSSC) in the Madeira River in December is related to reduced rainfall in the Madre de Dios sub-basin, while the negative trend in SSSC in January and February is associated with changes in rainfall patterns in the Andean region after 2008 and dilution caused by base flow. These findings highlight the importance of considering upstream processes in the Andean part of the basin when evaluating sediment trends in the Madeira River.

Contrasted Chemical Weathering Rates in Cratonic Basins: The Ogooue and Mbei Rivers, Western Central Africa

Summary: Despite the absence of tectonic activity, cratonic environments exhibit highly variable rock weathering rates. This study in Gabon's Ogooue and Mbei River basins reveals significant differences in weathering intensities among different regions, suggesting that the heterogeneity of weathering rates in cratonic regions should be considered for understanding the global carbon cycle and Earth's climate.

Summary: Shoreline changes in the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed from 1986 to 2018. The study found that both natural and human factors significantly impact shoreline changes. The findings provided important insights into predicting future shoreline positions and identifying vulnerable regions. Additionally, human activities were found to influence shoreline change models, emphasizing the need for effective management strategies to protect ecosystems and communities.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of 15 toxic metals in surface sediment in a tropical river ecosystem in Cuba. The results showed that the sediments had higher concentrations of four metals compared to Cuban norms. Various contamination indices were calculated, and correlations analysis revealed the main sources of contamination. The study provides important information for the management of the river and emphasizes the need for metal pollution control and monitoring.

Summary: Lanin volcano is a composite volcano in the Andes, which has erupted lava flows with different compositions. The volcano's magma reservoir contains a crystal mush, and the pre-eruptive conditions include temperature, pressure, and oxygen fugacity. Fractional crystallisation has led to the evolution of the magma with different compositions.

Double distance dependence in high-frequency ground motion along the plate boundary in Northern Chile

Benjamin Idini, Sergio Ruiz, Jean-Paul Ampuero, Felipe Leyton, Efrain Rivera

Summary: This study investigates the role of wedge integrity on the frequency content of strong ground motion produced by subduction earthquakes in Northern Chile. The results show that the frequency characteristics of seismic waves vary with hypocentral distance, indicating lateral variations in anelastic attenuation due to the heterogeneous tectonic structure.
