ATL31, an Arabidopsis RING-type ubiquitin ligase, plays a critical role in plant carbon/nitrogen (C/N)-nutrient responses during post-germinative growth and in defense responses to pathogen attack. ATL31 expression under these stress conditions suggested the presence of transcriptional regulators mediated by these stress signals. We recently reported that the expression pattern of WRKY33, a transcription factor involved in plant defense responses, is highly correlated with that of ATL31. In this study, we investigated the detailed relationship between the ATL31 gene and WRKY33. Using transient reporter analysis, we found that WRKY33 could significantly activate ATL31 transcription in plant cells. Transcript analysis of stable transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing WRKY33 confirmed that the expression of ATL31 in response to the PAMPs flg22 and chitin was enhanced compared with wild-type plants, while expression was repressed in wrky33 mutants. Further detailed transient reporter analysis revealed that transactivation by WRKY33 is required and mediated through a specific W-box cis-acting element in the promoter region of the ATL31 gene. In contrast, WRKY33 did not regulate ATL31 expression during the C/N response. Taken together, these results demonstrate that WRKY33 acts as a transcription factor of ATL31 and positively regulates its expression during activation of plant defense responses.

Hormonal Regulation in Different Varieties of Chenopodium quinoa Willd. Exposed to Short Acute UV-B Irradiation

Summary: The study found that the sensitivity to short-term acute UV-B doses in different varieties of quinoa is influenced by their parental lines and breeding time; UV-B sensitivity does not necessarily correlate with quinoa's geographical distribution; the role of flavonoids in the UV-B response seems to be different depending on varieties; moreover, changes in JA and SA correlate with UV-B tolerance, while the increase of ABA is mainly related to UV-B stress.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of UV radiation on ethylene (ET) production in Micro-Tom tomato plants. The results suggest that the downregulation of ACO isoforms may be responsible for the reduced foliar ET emission after UV treatment, while fluctuations in ACS and ACO mRNA in roots do not affect ET emission.

Remediation Capacity of Different Microalgae in Effluents Derived from the Cigarette Butt Cleaning Process

Carolina Chiellini, Lorenzo Mariotti, Thais Huarancca Reyes, Eduardo Jose de Arruda, Gustavo Graciano Fonseca, Lorenzo Guglielminetti

Summary: Microalgal-based remediation is an ecofriendly and cost-effective system for wastewater treatment. This study found that cigarette butt wastewater could affect the physiological status of microalgae, and the resistance and remediation capacity of microalgae depended on both the strain and the chemical characteristics of the organic pollutants. Nicotine, in particular, was the most difficult pollutant to remove.

UV-B Irradiation Effect on Microalgae Performance in the Remediation of Effluent Derived from the Cigarette Butt Cleaning Process

Summary: This study investigated the potential of ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation to alleviate the effects of pollutants in cigarette butt wastewater (CBW) using different Chlorella sorokiniana strains (F4, R1 and LG1). The results showed that UV-B treatments had long-term positive effects on non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity, and the adaptability to UV-B was strain-dependent. UV-B was found to activate defense pathways associated with resistance or tolerance to nicotine and nicotyrine.

Exploring the Physiological Multiplicity of Native Microalgae from the Ecuadorian Highland, Italian Lowland and Indoor Locations in Response to UV-B

Summary: The differential effects of UV-B on the inhibition or activation of protective mechanisms to maintain cells photosynthetically active were investigated in native microalgae. Results showed that UV-B significantly compromised all the physiological parameters in F4, thereby resulting in the most UV-B-sensitive strain. Contrarily, UV-B exposure did not lead to changes in the PEC physiological traits, resulting in the best UV-B-resistant strain.

Summary: This study identified the interaction between the trans-Golgi network/early endosome localized SNARE protein SYP61 and the transmembrane ubiquitin ligase ATL31 in Arabidopsis. It also revealed the critical role of SYP61 in plant responses to nutrient stress, as well as its ubiquitination under low carbon/high nitrogen conditions. These findings provide important insights into the ubiquitin signaling and membrane trafficking machinery in plants.
