Steviol glycosides (SVglys) are a group of diterpenoids mainly present in the leaves of stevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni). An experiment was conducted to find the functional role of SVglys compounds in stevia affected by drought stress. In this study, a liquid blend of SVglys (200 ppm) was sprayed on stevia plants grown in well-watered (90% field capacity) and drought-stress conditions (45% field capacity) and then the morphological traits and metabolites were evaluated. It was observed that leaf losses caused by drought stress were stopped through external application of SVglys and consequently the harvest index of stevia was increased. Metabolite analysis of stevia leaves showed that the total SVglys content was significantly decreased due to drought stress, but was compensated by external application of SVglys. Among the SVglys, Rebaudioside A responded more to external SVglys. A slight promotion in total antioxidant activity of stevia leaves was observed when external SVglys was applied. The glucose availability in stevia leaves was increased by external application of SVglys but only in well-watered plants. According to our findings, it can be concluded that in stevia, SVglys may have a positive function in drought stress tolerance by exerting a protective role under such conditions.

Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPR) induce antioxidant tolerance against salinity stress through biochemical and physiological mechanisms

Mohammadreza Neshat, Alireza Abbasi, Abdulhadi Hosseinzadeh, Mohammad Reza Sarikhani, Davood Dadashi Chavan, Abdolrahman Rasoulnia

Summary: Salinity is a severe abiotic stress that affects canola production. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria can alleviate salt stress and improve physiological and biochemical parameters in canola.

Mung Bean Genotypes Demonstrate a Correlative Response at Biochemical and Molecular Level Under Salinity Stress

Nasim Khalifeh, Manijeh Sabokdast Nodehi, Alireza Abbasi, Sajjad Sobhanverdi

Summary: This study investigated the effect of salt stress on mung bean genotypes and found that antioxidant activity and proline content were affected. The results suggest that antioxidant enzymes were more active in the tolerant genotype and proline accumulation was increased due to gene regulation. These findings have important implications for plant breeding programs.

Variety and Sowing Date Affect Seed Yield and Chemical Composition of Linseed Grown under Organic Production System in a Semiarid Mediterranean Environment

Alessandro Rossi, Clarissa Clemente, Silvia Tavarini, Luciana G. Angelini

Summary: The use of suitable species and varieties is crucial for improving resource use efficiency, biodiversity, and agroecosystem resilience in organic cropping systems. A 2-year field trial was conducted in Central Italy to investigate the potential of linseed inclusion within organic farming. The study found that autumn sowing with milder and wetter conditions was more favorable for linseed cultivation, resulting in higher seed yield and oil content. The choice of the most suitable variety was influenced by both sowing date and location. The results suggest that linseed can be a valuable autumn alternative for diversifying organic cropping systems.

Exploring genomic regions involved in bread wheat resistance to leaf rust at seedling/adult stages by using GWAS analysis

Saba Delfan, Mohammad Reza Bihamta, Seyed Taha Dadrezaei, Alireza Abbasi, Hadi Alipoor

Summary: This study aimed to identify leaf rust resistance-related genomic loci in Iranian wheat cultivars and landraces through GWAS. Evaluation of 320 wheat accessions against four prevalent rust pathotypes revealed diversity in their responses. GWAS analysis identified 80 leaf rust resistance QTLs located on almost all chromosomes, with six novel loci conferring resistance. The GBLUP genomic prediction model showed superior performance, suggesting its potential for genomic selection in wheat.

Spectral Response of Camelina (Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz) to Different Nitrogen Fertilization Regimes under Mediterranean Conditions

Clarissa Clemente, Leonardo Ercolini, Alessandro Rossi, Lara Foschi, Nicola Grossi, Luciana G. Angelini, Silvia Tavarini, Nicola Silvestri

Summary: The spectral response of camelina under different N fertilization regimes was evaluated using remote and proximal sensing techniques. The results showed that N fertilization significantly affected seed yield and N use efficiency, with the best results obtained at basal dressing at sowing (T2). The rise in air temperatures in 2022 led to a reduction in plant development and seed yield. The study also demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing remote sensing techniques from UAVs for predicting seed yield in camelina.

Valorization of an Old Variety of Triticum aestivum: A Study of Its Suitability for Breadmaking Focusing on Sensory and Nutritional Quality

Alessandro Bianchi, Francesca Venturi, Angela Zinnai, Isabella Taglieri, Basma Najar, Monica Macaluso, Giorgio Merlani, Luciana Gabriella Angelini, Silvia Tavarini, Clarissa Clemente, Chiara Sanmartin

Summary: Avanzi 3-Grano 23 (G23) is an old variety of Triticum aestivum from Lunigiana, Italy, where traditional farming communities have contributed to its success. G23 flour has unique nutritional and sensory traits but is not suitable for breadmaking due to technological limitations. This study explores the optimization of bread formulation using flour blending and leavening systems, finding that sourdough bread made with G23 flour has improved sensory and phytochemical profiles compared to traditional bread.

Supplemental UV-B Exposure Influences the Biomass and the Content of Bioactive Compounds in Linum usitatissimum L. Sprouts and Microgreens

Marco Santin, Maria Calogera Sciampagna, Alessia Mannucci, Martina Puccinelli, Luciana Gabriella Angelini, Silvia Tavarini, Mattia Accorsi, Luca Incrocci, Annamaria Ranieri, Antonella Castagna

Summary: This study revealed the effects of pre-harvest ultraviolet-B irradiation on the nutritional and nutraceutical quality of flaxseed sprouts and microgreens. The UV-B treatment enhanced total phenolics and flavonoids content, antioxidant capacity, and quality of microgreens. However, it also decreased biomass and stem length, and caused changes in some photosynthetic pigments.
