Summary: Sex has traditionally been considered as having only a reproductive function in the animal kingdom. However, evidence from non-human primates suggests that sex also serves other important functions outside of reproduction. The human sexual experience, including pleasure, dominance, and communication, is unique, but it is possible that other primates also share these experiences to some extent. This commentary discusses the evidence from non-human primates, explores the affective and social functions of sex, and proposes potential methods for measuring these experiences. It aims to foster discussion and change the way we think about primate sex.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and concordance of HPV infections in different anatomical sites among female sex workers in Ibadan, Nigeria. The results showed a high prevalence of HPV infections in cervical, vulval, oral, and anal sites, with HPV 35 being the most prevalent high-risk type. The risk factors for HPV infection varied across different anatomical sites.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that many college students do not consider oral-genital contact as a form of sexual activity. However, this study asked university students about their own personal sexual experiences. The study found that students who denied having had sex but admitted to oral-genital contact had higher levels of social desirability and religiosity.

Summary: The use of online platforms to seek sexual partners and engage in risky sexual activities is not uncommon among heterosexual men in China. Future prevention strategies should focus on heterosexual men who seek sex online to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections.

Summary: This study investigated the association between heavy rainfall and HIV burden in sub-Saharan Africa over a 12-year period. The findings showed that heavy rainfall was associated with a higher risk of HIV infection, sexually transmitted infections, and an increased number of sexual partners. The study suggests that heavy rainfall may contribute to an increase in sexual transmission of HIV and exacerbate food insecurity and damage to public health infrastructure.

Summary: The unique composition and function of the cervicovaginal microbiota are associated with protection against and risk for sexually transmitted infections (STI), while less is known about the interaction between penile microbiota and STIs in men. This review briefly discusses the current understanding of these microbiota and their role in select STIs, as well as strategies for manipulating genital microbiota to optimize protection against STIs, highlighting major research gaps and proposing a framework for future studies.

Summary: Despite limited STI surveillance data for women who have sex with women, this study compared sexual practices and STI positivity among women who have sex with men only, women who have sex with women only, and women who have sex with men and women. The study found differences in sexual practices and STI positivity according to the sex of women's partners, and these differences are important to consider for future STI trends.

Summary: Antagonistic interactions between the sexes are important drivers of evolutionary divergence. When loci under interlocus sexual conflict are located on the sex chromosomes, it can lead to cycles of antagonistic coevolution between them and therefore between the sexes. Experimental crosses using Drosophila melanogaster showed that disrupting putatively coevolved sex chromosome pairs resulted in increased male reproductive success but also in lower offspring viability, with these sexually antagonistic fitness effects appearing to be resolved after 25 generations of experimental evolution. Population genetic models of antagonistic coevolution based on empirical results support the conclusion that antagonistic coevolution between the sex chromosomes is plausible and may drive genetic and phenotypic divergence between populations.

Summary: This study found that some transgender women engage in high-risk sexual behaviors while having limited awareness of the symptoms of STIs. Despite reaching orgasm in most of their sexual relationships, they experience low sexual satisfaction, which may be related to body dissatisfaction and the lack of vaginoplasty. The need for gender affirming surgeries and psychiatric interventions affecting body satisfaction was identified in this group.

Summary: The epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is closely linked to host mating dynamics, with adult sex ratios often skewed towards males or females. Disease characteristics, gender, and sex ratio have complex interactions affecting STI prevalence, with higher transmission rates and lower virulence generally increasing differences between males and females. Our study provides insights into how STI prevalence in males and females depends on the complex interaction between host population sex ratio and disease characteristics.

Summary: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global public health issue, but there is limited research on their burden and trends. According to this study, although most countries have seen a decrease in STIs incidence rates and DALYs, the absolute number of cases and DALYs has increased from 1990 to 2019. STIs continue to be a global public health challenge, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America.

Summary: The study aimed to compare sexual behaviors between app-using MSM and non-app-using MSM, and evaluate the association between app use and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The findings showed that app users were more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors, but the prevalence of HIV and other STIs were similar to non-app users.

Summary: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a heterogeneous group of tumors derived from the mucous membranes lining the oral cavity, larynx, hypopharynx, nasopharynx, and oropharynx. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of miR-195 expression in HNSCC tissues. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, and the results showed that higher miR-195 expression was associated with improved overall survival in HNSCC patients.

Summary: The medical use of cannabis has a long history, and Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol (CBN) are the main cannabinoids found in cannabis. CBD does not produce the psychotropic effects associated with cannabis and has gained attention in dentistry. Subjective findings and research evidence suggest therapeutic effects of CBD, although there is conflicting data on its mechanism of action and therapeutic potential. This article provides an overview of the scientific evidence on CBD's action and explores its possible oral benefits in dentistry, highlighting its promising biological features.

Summary: Antiresorption drugs like bisphosphonates and monoclonal antibodies are used in the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases. These drugs have been associated with cases of osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). Risk factors include extraction procedures in oral surgery, particularly in the mandible and maxilla. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine if there is a greater risk of MRONJ in male or female subjects and to assess the involvement of osteonecrosis in different extraction sites. After analyzing 24 studies, the results showed a trend of higher risk in males and in the posterior mandibular sector, but further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the relationship between burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and depressive and anxiety disorders in middle-aged and older individuals. The results showed that anxiety disorders were the most common psychiatric disorders related to BMS (63.7%), followed by depressive disorders (36.3%). Summary: Labial frenectomy is a surgical technique that aims to remove the frenulum attached to the underlying bone. This study compared the effectiveness of laser technique with conventional surgical technique for labial frenectomy. The review suggests that laser-performed labial frenectomy is faster and offers better intra- and postoperative management, but more research is needed for definitive conclusions.

Summary: Hybrid closed loop (HCL) systems combine insulin delivery pumps with glucose sensors for continuous monitoring, managed by an algorithm. The MiniMed (TM) 670G is the first HCL system available for clinical use. Literature review shows that the system is safe and effective in managing glucose control, with potential improvements in HbA1c levels and time spent within target range. Psychological outcomes vary in different papers. Longer studies are needed to better understand the system's potential.
