Summary: The research synthesized two acridine derivatives and developed two mixed-mode stationary phases by functionalizing silica. These stationary phases were designed with multiple interactions, including pi-pi stacking interaction, reverse phase, hydrophilic interaction, and anion exchange, based on the structure of the acridine groups on the silica gel. The performance of the columns was investigated by chromatographic parameters in terms of column efficiency, asymmetry factor, retention factor, and resolution.

Summary: The chromatographic behavior of mixed-mode and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) was assessed in this study for the separation of metabolites from glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathways. Optimization of chromatographic conditions allowed for selective targeted analysis of glycolytic phosphorylated carbohydrate metabolites using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The separation of pentose phosphate isomers was achieved using mixed-mode HILIC/SAX and HILIC BEH Amide columns. HILIC-MS/MS showed challenges in separating hexose monophosphate metabolites, but the BEH Amide column provided the best results for this separation.

Summary: In this study, three recently developed HILIC columns were characterized in detail to compare their peptide retention mechanisms, revealing a multimodal retention mechanism in systems with these stationary phases. By balancing the properties of analytes and stationary phases, satisfactory retention and peak shape of peptides can be achieved. Buffer concentration and pH optimization was confirmed to be an effective tool for manipulating retention and peak symmetry, enhancing the potential applications of these columns in the analysis of diverse compounds.

Summary: Evaluation of the chromatographic properties of covalently bonded hyperbranched stationary phase based on PS-DVB in suppressed IC, RP HPLC, and HILIC modes showed good separation performance for various compounds. Studying the retention trends of hydrophobic and polar analytes on the prepared stationary phase revealed the significant influence of analyte nature on the retention mechanism.

Summary: With the increasing use of nucleic acid-based pharmaceuticals, efficient analytical methods are needed for synthetic oligonucleotides. Two-dimensional chromatography techniques, including orthogonal chromatographic methods, are becoming more relevant due to the complexity of the oligonucleotides. In this study, a new polybutylene terephthalate-based stationary phase was tested for the analysis of siRNA, showing higher orthogonality and improved resolution for peak purity evaluation.

Summary: The Silpr-2MI-C18 column showed effective separation of amino acids, alkylbenzenes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under RPLC mode, as well as separation of amino acids under HILIC mode with different separation arrangement compared to a commercial C-18 column. Additionally, the new stationary phase of RPLC/HILIC/AEC exhibited better retention of biological samples compared to the commercial C-18 column.

Summary: This study investigates the retention behavior and mechanism of solutes in hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) using stoichiometric displacement theory (SDT). A HILIC/reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) dual-retention mechanism is studied in detail using a β-CD HILIC column. The study finds that a four-parameter equation derived from SDT-R accurately describes the U-shaped curves of solutes with RPLC/HILIC dual-retention mechanisms on the β-CD column, providing a theoretical guide for the development of HILIC and the enhancement of separation efficiency.

Summary: This article describes the fabrication of porous nicotinic acid-functionalized chito-oligosaccharide-bonded titania/silica hybrid monoliths through a co-gelation sol-gel process. The obtained stationary phase provides superior physiochemical properties, such as a cationic hydrophilic surface, porosity, and mechanical strength. The produced capillary columns showed high chromatographic performance with acceptable selectivity for charged analytes as well as organic polar compounds.

Summary: This study synthesized a mixed-mode stationary phase for chromatographic separation by decorating silica microspheres with two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) nanosheets and ionic liquids. The prepared column exhibited enhanced chromatographic separation performance for partially hydrophilic compounds and showed excellent repeatability and stability. The composites could be easily prepared and have potential applications in liquid chromatography.

Summary: Changes in glycan expression play a role in the development of diseases. Analyzing isomeric N-glycans using LC-MS/MS is challenging due to the large number of possible conformations. Derivatization of glycans is commonly used but time-consuming. This study focuses on efficient isomeric separation of native N-glycans using a nano ZIC-HILIC column. The stability and reproducibility of the column were confirmed.
