Summary: Polymer materials are driving rapid societal development, but improper disposal leads to serious pollution and resource waste. Chemical recovery shows promise in converting waste polymers into useful chemicals or materials, with a focus on addressing the challenges of recovering thermosetting resins such as unsaturated polyester resins. New strategies are needed to enhance the selective breaking of ester bonds and improve the reutilization of degradation products for a more sustainable future.

Summary: This study proposed a waterborne unsaturated polyester resin (WUPR) pothole binder to address the drawbacks of traditional emulsified asphalt binders. Through tests and comparisons, it was found that the WUPR binder had similar mechanical properties to waterborne epoxy resin (WER) binder, but better low-temperature performance and lower cost.

Summary: Currently, cold patching materials (CPMs) have become a preferred choice for pothole repair on asphalt pavements in cold and wet weather. However, the survival time of conventional asphalt-based CPMs is not satisfactory, and they can cause water and air pollution. This study developed a pollution-free, economical, and high-performance CPM using a low viscosity, high toughness, and low temperature curing epoxy resin (ER) binder and unsaturated polyester. The results showed that the epoxy/unsaturated polyester mixture (EUPM) had excellent performance and repair effect, proving its feasibility and advantages in asphalt pavement maintenance.

Summary: The study explored the use of microwave radiation in different stages of producing carbon nanotube-modified unsaturated polyester composites. Experimental results determined the optimal content of multi-walled carbon nanotubes in the system, which had the greatest impact on composite strength. The effects of microwave treatment on the properties of polyester composites, including oligomers, polymerized composites, and MWCNTs prior to their addition into oligomers, were investigated. The study also considered the processes of structure formation, composite structure, the impact of microwave radiation on MWCNTs, and the thermal stability of the resulting composites.

Summary: The research focuses on characterizing the mechanical properties and morphology of polyester/coconut shell powder composites filled with corn husk fibre (CHF). Results show that increasing CHF content leads to higher flexural strength but lower tensile strength of the composite. The enhancement of the interfacial bonding between CHF-CSP-polyester and the reduction of fiber pull-outs contribute to the improved properties.

Summary: In this study, an unsaturated polyester vitrimer was synthesized and characterized using a transesterification catalyst. This approach solved the reprocessability, self-healing, and recyclability issues of unsaturated polyester thermosets and preserved their mechanical properties, glass transition, and chemical stability.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of NaOH concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, and sodium silicate-to-sodium hydroxide ratio on the compressive strength development of fly ash-metakaolin blend geopolymers. The addition of aluminum phosphate as a source of aluminum was found to significantly enhance the physical and mechanical properties of the blend geopolymer.

Summary: Hybrid coatings of SiO2 and recycled unsaturated polyester resin (R-UPR) were prepared by the sol-gel process on glass substrates. The results showed that SiO2 enhanced the mechanical and thermal properties of the R-UPR, and the coatings exhibited excellent adhesion to the substrate with a smooth surface.

Summary: This study explores the effect of phenolic resin on the thermal insulation performance of geopolymer by preparing fly ash geopolymer samples using phenolic resin. The results show that phenolic resin can improve the thermal insulation effect of geopolymer and reduce thermal conductivity by narrowing the throat in the pore and limiting thermal convection. This study provides a new method to improve thermal insulation performance of geopolymers.

Summary: Dual-initiation is a new approach in the curing of unsaturated polyester resin and the manufacture of low-density unsaturated polyester resin composite materials. By using different combinations of initiators, dual-initiators can release more active free radicals, accelerating the curing process and improving the cross-linking of the resin. This results in enhanced specific compressive strength of the composite materials.
