Summary: CMD is a major cause of disability and death in SCI patients, with insufficient attention given to sex and gender differences in research. Future studies should adopt a more gender-sensitive research framework and encourage collaborative research to include more females.

Summary: The study found a significant proportion of individuals with traumatic spinal cord injury were prescribed opioids in a recent one-year period, with some receiving doses exceeding the maximum recommended by the Canadian opioid guideline. The research also identified risk factors associated with chronic, high-dose opioid use.

Summary: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe event with multiple comorbidities. It is often accompanied by traumatic brain injury (TBI), which has its own set of complications. Understanding the etiology and epidemiology of these dual diagnoses and employing appropriate assessment and management strategies can help optimize functional recovery.

Summary: This study investigated the priorities of functional recovery and preferences for community rehabilitation services among Chinese individuals with SCI and their primary caregivers. The findings revealed that arm/hand function was given the highest priority among tetraplegics, while bladder/bowel function was the most important area for paraplegics. Sexual function was ranked as the lowest priority by all groups. The majority of participants expressed interest in advanced technology and believed that it could bring significant improvement to their quality of life in the future. The study provides valuable insights for future research and the provision of rehabilitation services in China.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the differences in neurologic recovery between AIS grade A and B in patients with initial cervical spinal cord injuries. The findings showed that although both groups had similar upper extremity motor score recovery, the rate of conversion to motor incomplete status, lower extremity motor score, and sensory recovery were significantly different for patients with AIS grade B.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated demographic findings, typical injuries, and neurological outcomes in patients with cervical trauma and tetraplegia caused by diving into shallow water. A total of 160 patients were evaluated, with the majority being young males who sustained injuries in inland waters during the summer months. Surgical procedures were performed in most cases, and the average hospital stay was 202 days. Neurological improvement was observed in a significant number of patients, but the consequences of the injuries were severe and lifelong. Specialized care in both the acute phase and rehabilitation can benefit these patients.

Summary: The demographics of acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) have changed over the last few decades. This study analyzed the incidence and neurological characteristics of different syndromes of incomplete tetraplegia in individuals with traumatic SCI using new computable definitions. The findings provide updated information and proposed criteria for these syndromes, enabling better understanding and future studies.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the use of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) to improve bowel management in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Results showed that SCS significantly reduced time required for bowel management, increased airway pressure generation, and improved overall quality of life. Importantly, the improvement in bowel management was associated with restoration of intra-abdominal pressure development.

Summary: This study described and evaluated systematic reviews of exoskeleton use for gait and mobility in individuals with neurologic disorders. The quality of the reviews was found to be generally poor in terms of methodology and reporting, with shortcomings in reporting patient and intervention information, as well as failure to address subject duplication in primary studies. Awareness of these weaknesses is important for stakeholders relying on this information for decision-making, and future research should aim to address these methodological limitations.

Summary: Among adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI) across the lifespan, higher frequency of participation does not necessarily lead to higher satisfaction with participation. Relationships are valued more highly than other life areas by individuals with TBI, and resources to improve access to more frequent participation could enhance participation satisfaction. Cognitive functioning and frequency of participation are consistent predictors of participation satisfaction.
