Limestone samples from Assuit Governrate in Upper Egypt were subjected to elemental analysis by instrumental neutron activation analysis and X-ray fluorescence techniques. The samples were properly prepared together with their standards and simultaneously irradiated in a neutron flux of the order 7 x 1011 n/cm(2) s using TRIGA research reactor at Mainz. After activation the samples were subjected to gamma-ray spectrometry using a high purity germanium detection system and computerized multichannel analyzer. Nineteen elements: Na, Ca, Mn, Fe, Sc, Cr, Co, Zn, Sn, La, Ce, Nd, Eu, Sm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Th and U were analyzed. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry have been also used. The presence of any elements in higher or lower levels in certain limestone samples is contingent on the occurrence of its bearing minerals, nature of parent sediments and depositional environments of these sediments. The major elements in the samples were also observed to be among the elements that had high enrichment factors in the study of suspended dust particulate within and around cement industries. This confirms cement as the major contributor to the airborne particulate matter in the environs.

Ecological impacts of Assuit fertiliser factory in Upper Egypt: environmental implications and spatial distribution of natural radionuclides

Eheb Massoud, Atef El-Taher, Laith Ahmed Najam, Reda Elsaman

Summary: In this study, the radioactivity level in soil samples collected from the area around a fertiliser factory in Upper Egypt was measured using gamma ray spectrometry. The concentrations of Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40 were determined, and the effect of the factory's exhaust on the radiological contents of the surrounding soil was investigated. The results showed that some radiological hazards exceeded the permissible level.

Radioactive mineralizations on granitic rocks and silica veins on shear zone of El-Missikat area, Central Eastern Desert, Egypt

Hamdy A. Awad, Hesham M. H. Zakaly, Aleksey Nastavkin, Amira M. El Tohamy, Atef El-Taher

Summary: The shear zone of the El-Missikat area is considered one of the most important occurrences of uranium mineralization in the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt, characterized by tabular elongated zone of crushing and brecciation with silicification. The concentrations of natural radionuclides suggest the presence of U mineralization in granitic rocks and silica veins, mainly represented by radioactive minerals such as uranophane, kasolite, and U-bearing zircon.

Mohamed M. Ghoneim, Elena G. Panova, Ahmed E. Abdel Gawad, Hamdy A. Awad, Hesham M. H. Zakaly, Atef El-Taher

Summary: Based on Clarke analyses, geochemical series of chemical elements of the intrusive rocks of El Sela are identified. Microgranite and dolerite have the highest U-contents whereas the two-mica granite has high Th. Microgranite, two-mica granite, and bostonite belong to calc-alkaline affinity, while dolerite belongs to tholeiitic.

A comparative Study Between Fluka and Microshield Modeling Calculations to study the Radiation-Shielding of Nanoparticles and Plastic Waste composites

Atef El-Taher, Hesham M. H. Zakaly, Mariia Pyshkina, Elhassan A. Allam, Rehab M. El-Sharkawy, Mohamed E. Mahmoud, Mohamed A. E. Abdel-Rahman

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on the radiation shielding properties of plastic waste mixed with nano copper oxide and phosphotungstic acid using FLUKA code and Microshield software programs. The new nanocomposite was found to be effective in shielding gamma radiation due to the presence of dense materials like nano copper oxide and phosphotungstic acid. The results indicated that the mass attenuation coefficients and effective atomic and electron densities of the samples increased with higher PTA content, while the half-value layer, tenth value layer, and mean free path decreased.

Sherif A. A. Taalab, Meshari Al Meshari, Yasser Alzamil, Ahmad Abanomy, Amjad R. R. Alyahyawi, Waheed H. H. Mohamed, Atef El-Taher

Summary: The research area in Egypt's Central Eastern Desert is important for its valuable metal content. Episyenite rocks in this area serve as a trap for uranium mineralization. The study focused on evaluating the natural radioactive risk and pollution, finding high radioelement contents and low eTh/eU ratio in the rocks. Contour maps showed higher concentration of eU and eTh in the central and southeastern parts, while potassium was higher in the northeastern and southwestern parts. The radiological and ecological parameters exceeded the recommended international values in some samples, indicating unsafe use of the rocks in construction or infrastructure.
