Summary: The study found that the screening of subclinical left ventricular dysfunction and atrial fibrillation in elderly populations may be compromised by mild cognitive impairment. Mild cognitive impairment had a prevalence of 30%, mainly affecting executive function and delayed recall. Results showed that mild cognitive impairment was associated with non-adherence to atrial fibrillation screening, but not with subclinical cardiac dysfunction or subclinical atrial fibrillation.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between atrial fibrillation (AF) and cognitive disease progression, as well as sex differences. The results showed that AF was associated with a higher risk of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in women. Women with AF and normal cognition were more likely to progress to MCI and vascular dementia than men or individuals without AF. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication post cardiac surgery, with detrimental short- and long-term outcomes. Accurately identifying predictors and biomarkers can help in giving appropriate prophylactic measures, distributing resources effectively, and unraveling the mechanism behind POAF.

Summary: The study aimed to determine when postoperative delirium first occurs and to assess evaluation strategies with lowest frequency of testing. Postoperative delirium is common among patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass and/or valve surgery. Delirium is most often detected in the mornings, with the majority of cases identified by the end of the first postoperative day. Evaluating patients twice daily for four days can detect almost all delirium cases, making it a sufficient approach for clinical and research purposes.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the implementation process of the PERFECT-ER intervention in five acute hospital wards and its impact on staff practices and perceptions. The process evaluation identified that implementation was fragile when ward pressures were high and when staff perceived the relative priority of intervention practices to be low. The study suggests that implementation was expediated when senior staff were on board as opinion leaders and formally appointed internal implementation leaders exerted their power.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of cognitive impairment and dementia on adverse outcomes in older surgical patients. The findings showed that preoperative cognitive impairment significantly increased the risk of delirium, mortality, discharge to assisted care, 30-day readmissions, and postoperative complications. Dementia was also found to increase the risk of 1-year mortality.

Summary: This study assessed the benefits and harms of Sacubitril/valsartan (S/V) compared to ACEI or ARB in heart failure patients. The results showed that S/V reduced HF hospitalizations by 20%, CV mortality by 14%, and all-cause mortality by 11% compared to ACEI or ARB. However, S/V had negative effects on renal function and increased hypotension events.

Summary: AKI is a common and severe complication in critically ill patients, with high mortality rates. Statin therapy may have beneficial effects on the disease by reducing mortality rates and overall hospital length of stay. However, the impact of statin treatment on the development of AKI and ICU stay is inconclusive.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are common for both men and women, but there are differences in terms of symptoms, pathophysiology, and treatment response. Women often have a lower perception of the risk, leading to delayed diagnosis and recognition of symptoms. The risk of cardiovascular diseases and the importance of monitoring women's health increase after menopause due to the loss of estrogen's protective effect.

Summary: In this study, a female child with multiple sulfatase deficiency (MSD) received trehalose treatment for 3 months. The efficacy of trehalose was evaluated through various measurements, and it was found that trehalose improved the quality of life assessment and led to a slight decrease in spleen dimensions. Further research with a larger MSD population and longer-term follow-up is needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study assessed the association between stroke risk factors and incident stroke, and evaluated whether the magnitude of this association is uniform across different age groups. The results showed that the associations of hypertension and diabetes with stroke significantly decreased in older age groups, while the associations of smoking, atrial fibrillation, and left ventricular hypertrophy with stroke did not vary with age.

Summary: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the leading cause of premature death worldwide. Inflammation, along with other risk factors such as hypertension, lipid disorders, and diabetes, may contribute to the residual risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). While modern lipid-lowering treatments are not fully effective in reducing inflammation, selected nutraceuticals with anti-inflammatory properties, including tea and coffee, may have a significant impact on reducing cardiovascular risk and mortality. However, the clinical significance of the anti-inflammatory effects of tea and coffee remains uncertain due to inconsistent results from studies and confounding factors.

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disorder characterized by high levels of LDL-C. Inhibiting ANGPTL3 has shown promise as a therapeutic approach for reducing LDL-C and TG levels in FH patients. Evinacumab, a monoclonal antibody that inhibits ANGPTL3, has been found to be effective and safe in patients with both homozygous and heterozygous FH, as well as resistant hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. This paper provides a summary of the role of ANGPTL3, 4, and 8 in lipoprotein metabolism, clinical trial findings with evinacumab, and its potential as a new agent in lipid-lowering therapy.

Summary: COVID-19 is a severe respiratory syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2. Heart failure is associated with poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients and can also result from myocardial damage. Understanding the interactions between the disease and viruses is crucial for optimal treatment. Currently, the validity of screening for cardiovascular complications after COVID-19 is uncertain, and individualized diagnosis procedures based on clinical symptoms are recommended. We present a structured approach to COVID-19 patients with heart involvement.

Summary: Elevated levels of LDL-C increase the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and reducing LDL-C levels can lower the risk of cardiovascular adverse events. Red yeast rice (RYR) has cholesterol-lowering effects due to its bioactive components (monacolins) that inhibit the activity of HMG-CoA reductase. However, the use of RYR as a food supplement at a dose of 10 mg/day raises significant safety concerns, and serious adverse effects have been reported at even lower doses.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic, which started in Wuhan, China, in early 2020, has caused a global health crisis. The disease mainly affects the respiratory system but can also have an impact on other systems, including the cardiovascular system. The relationship between atherosclerosis and COVID-19 is bidirectional, with both conditions exacerbating each other. The pandemic has also led to reduced access to healthcare amenities, an increase in sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits, resulting in a high prevalence of overweight and obese individuals. The long-term healthcare challenges posed by COVID-19 can be mitigated by the lessons learned and the advancements made in patient care during this crisis.
