Statement of problem. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc is often observed to be thicker in temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients. This clinical observation requires verification. Purpose. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate whether the TMJ disc responds to dysfunctional occlusal changes by an increase in thickness. Material and methods. Twelve cadaver heads were divided into 2 groups, I with physiologically balanced occlusion (BO), 7 cadaver heads and 14 joints, and the other with physiologically nonbalanced occlusion (NO), 5 cadaver heads and 9 joints. The NO group had defining traits, such as reverse articulation or tightly locked occlusion. The latter is an occlusal relationship with drifted, tilted, and/or supraerupted teeth, often seen in patients who have lost posterior teeth. Histological sections from the lateral, center, and medial parts of the joints stained with haematoxylin and eosin were used for measuring the disc thickness. Student t tests and Bonferroni correction were used to compare groups (alpha=.05). Results. All 9 mean thickness values were higher in the NO than in the BO group. According to the t tests, the postenor band was thicker in the lateral (P=.007) and center (P=.015) sections, and the intermediate zone was thicker in the lateral section (P=.008) in the NO than in the BO group. These differences were not significant after Bonferroni corrections. Conclusions. The results suggest that the TMJ disc has the ability to adapt to alteration of the space between condyle and fossa caused by occlusal changes. Further studies from larger groups should be undertaken.

Effects of tantalum addition on microstructure and properties of titanium alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

Zhou Li-bo, Shu Jing-guo, Sun Jin-shan, Chen Jian, He Jian-jun, Li Wei, Huang Wei-ying, Niu Yan, Yuan Tie-chui

Summary: In this study, biomedical Ti-13Nb-13Zr powder mixed with tantalum particles was fabricated using L-PBF, resulting in a microstructure with beta matrix and unmelted tantalum distributed along the molten pool boundaries. Increasing tantalum content reduced molten pool size and resulted in finer microstructure at the center and coarser microstructure at the boundaries of the melt pool. Columnar-to-equiaxed transitions occurred near unmelted tantalum, with low lattice mismatch induced by solid tantalum phase. Recrystallization texture was strengthened and fiber texture weakened with increasing tantalum content. The formation of refined martensite alpha ' grains during L-PBF led to higher compressive strengths compared to samples fabricated using traditional methods, setting an important reference for future biomedical alloy design via L-PBF process.

Silicon-Based Arrayed waveguide gratings for WDM and spectroscopic analysis applications

Jun Zou, Fangyuan Sun, Changhui Wang, Ming Zhang, Junnan Wang, Tingting Lang, Xuyang Wang, Zichun Le, Jian-Jun He

Summary: This study compares the performance of silicon-based arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) with star couplers of Rowland and Confocal configurations for TE and TM polarizations. It is found that the star coupler with Rowland configuration and constant projection period on the tangent line at the grating pole achieves better spectral performance. The spectral performance of AWGs is highly dependent on phase errors, and reducing the size of the phase region can improve spectral responses.

Summary: A monolithic 8 x 8 transmitter-router chip, fabricated on InGaAlAs-InP multi-quantum well wafer, has been experimentally demonstrated for distributed wavelength routing network in the O-band. The chip integrates a tunable V-cavity laser array, a cyclic-arrayed waveguide grating router, and a semiconductor amplifier array using the quantum-well intermixing technique. It offers multi-wavelength and multi-port transmissions, making it suitable for applications in datacenters and high-performance computers.

Novel High-Resolution and Large-Bandwidth Micro-Spectrometer Using Multi-Input Counter-Propagating Arrayed Waveguide Grating and Dual-Wavelength Grating Coupler on Silicon on Insulator

Jun Zou, Lingfeng Li, Changhui Wang, Yuan Zhuang, Xuyang Wang, Jinhua Hu, Shaobo Luo, Jian-Jun He

Summary: In this study, a novel micro-spectrometer with high-resolution and large-bandwidth is proposed and demonstrated. It utilizes an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and dual-wavelength grating couplers to operate at dual-wavelength band. The resolution of the micro-spectrometer is improved by employing time-division-multiplexing inputs, and the effective channel number is enlarged. Experimental results show that the fabricated device achieves 63 effective channels and resolutions of 0.5 and 0.442 nm at 1550 and 1310 nm bands, respectively.
