In this paper we investigate the dielectric response of cured epoxy resins based on biphenyl group. We chose two monomers, which were earlier synthesised, containing the same mesogen but with long and short symmetric tails. They were cured with standard amines (DDM, DMAP). Firstly we optimised conditions of the curing process by dielectric and optical observation in situ. Small differences in the dynamics of the curing process were observed in different mixtures. For the four selected products we made dielectric measurements in a wide range of frequency and temperature. Although, generally, dielectric response is similar in all the cured materials, differences can be seen in the details. At lower temperatures, quite strong relaxation process is seen in all products, its low activation energy points towards a beta-process, which appears in many polymers. The Havriliak-Negami formula was fitted to the data and characteristic parameters of the observed relaxation processes were compared in detail. In some cases the alpha-process also appears. We conclude how the longer spacer and the type of curing process influence the electrical properties of the resin.

Zinc substitution effect on the structural, spectroscopic and electrical properties of nanocrystalline MnFe2O4 spinel ferrite

C. Murugesan, K. Ugendar, L. Okrasa, Jun Shen, G. Chandrasekaran

Summary: In this study, nanocrystalline Mn-Zn ferrites were synthesized through a solvent-free combustion reaction method and characterized using various techniques. The results showed that Zn substitution affects the crystallite size and electrical properties of the samples, but does not significantly alter the ionic states. The Zn-substituted manganese ferrite nanoparticles hold promise for high-frequency electronic device applications.

Summary: The IFMIF-DONES facility is dedicated to irradiating structural materials for future fusion reactors. This study explores the potential for the facility to be used for complementary experiments by evaluating its neutron performance in a dedicated hall. With a simple beam tube geometry, simulations show that the facility can provide a collimated fast-neutron beam and, with the addition of a moderator and neutron extraction lines, thermal neutron beams for various experiments. The results suggest that IFMIF-DONES has the potential to be a medium-flux neutron facility for a wide range of neutron applications.

Changes in molecular relaxations and network properties of a triaromatic liquid crystal epoxy resin with nonterminal functional groups

Magdalena Wlodarska, Beata Mossety-Leszczak, Maciej Kisiel, Weronika Zajac, Lidia Okrasa

Summary: Two types of liquid crystal epoxy precursors and corresponding epoxy-amine networks are investigated. The physical properties of the monomers and cured products are affected by the structural differences between the carbon chains. The dielectric response of the NTEM monomer reveals two relaxation processes, while MU22 only displays one. Both cured products exhibit a segmental relaxation process related to structural reorientation.
