Summary: Dual-innervated single-stage free gracilis muscle transfer (FGMT) is effective for facial reanimation in children with unilateral facial palsy, utilizing both a stronger motor source (MNM) and an emotional stimulus (CFNG). This approach may become the new criterion standard for pediatric facial reanimation.

Summary: Facial paralysis is a complex and devastating condition that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Surgical interventions and nonsurgical treatments are both important in reanimating the facial muscles and improving facial function. Further research, standardization of objective measures, and clinical trials are needed to determine the optimal treatment plan and assess the efficacy of psychological intervention. Ongoing exploration of novel approaches and technological advancements in tissue engineering will shape the future of facial reanimation.

Summary: This review article provides updated information on evidence-based practices for the evaluation and management of facial paralysis. The goals of facial reanimation are to achieve facial symmetry at rest, protect the cornea, restore smile symmetry, and improve facial movement. Recent advancements in facial reanimation techniques have allowed clinicians to approach challenging cases with reliable strategies. The article discusses the use of machine learning software for assessments and explores controversial topics such as timing of intervention, choice of donor nerve, and management of nonflaccid facial palsy with synkinesis. It also highlights the evolution of conservative management strategies and innovations in surgical techniques, particularly the gracilis free muscle transfer.

Summary: This article discusses the causes, preoperative evaluation, and treatment techniques for facial paralysis, including restoring corneal sensation and eyelid closure, elevating the upper lip for smile, and depressing the lower lip for lip symmetry. The impact of facial mimetic impairments on patients' social functioning and emotional well-being is emphasized. The timing of injury and repair, patient characteristics, and cause of facial paralysis are all considered in selecting the most appropriate reconstructive approach. This article describes evidence-based management of facial paralysis.

Summary: Facial paralysis can have a significant impact on functionality and mental health. Facial reanimation surgery is a solution to improve facial symmetry and movement. This study focused on analyzing the morphology and quantifying architectural parameters of two important perioral muscles, Zygomaticus minor (Zmin) and Zygomaticus major (Zmaj), using three-dimensional models. The findings revealed differences in fiber bundle orientation and partitions of the two muscles, with Zmaj having greater mean fiber bundle length and physiological cross-sectional area than Zmin. The knowledge gained from this study is crucial for reconstructive surgeons to perform dynamic facial reanimation and assist in selecting the most suitable donor site for reconstruction.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic overview of various aspects related to facial nerve paralysis, including reconstructive techniques, grading scales, evaluation methods, reversibility, non-reconstructive procedures, medical and physical therapy, psychological aspect, and prevention. The authors conducted a comprehensive literature review and proposed an algorithm for selecting reconstructive strategies. The study concluded that a thorough clinical examination, advanced imaging, and electromyographic examination are essential for diagnosing facial palsy, and there is a need for clearer guidelines and recommendations in the field.

Summary: Facial palsy (FP), a severe nerve disorder, can be treated with Cross Face Nerve Grafting (CFNG), a surgical technique that uses sural nerve grafts. The study found that the sural nerve is a reliable graft with minimal donor side effects. Biopsies from 15 FP patients undergoing CFNG showed significant differences in axonal capacity between proximal and distal sections, but no differences in nerve caliber or axonal capacity based on the side of nerve harvest. Age did not affect axonal capacity. These findings provide valuable insights for improving CFNG techniques and individualizing treatment plans for FP patients, enhancing overall outcomes.

Summary: The study aims to compare the oncologic, medical, and surgical outcomes of lumpectomy and oncoplastic breast reduction surgery (OBRS) on a national scale. A database was used to analyze patient data and match them based on various factors. The results showed that lumpectomy patients had higher rates of repeat lumpectomy or subsequent mastectomy, while OBRS patients had higher rates of surgical complications but fewer medical complications. Logistic regression analysis revealed that OBRS was associated with a decreased likelihood of repeat lumpectomy. Although OBRS was associated with increased wound complications, medical complications were found to occur less frequently.
