Summary: This review aims to investigate the applications and benefits of negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in horses. A scoping review was conducted on three databases, and 15 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results suggest that NPWT can be used as a treatment option for wound management and surgical-site infections in horses.

Summary: This clinical study compares the use of VAC therapy and conventional dressing in the postoperative management of lower limb reconstruction. The results show that patients treated with VAC therapy have a higher success rate of graft take, shorter immobilization time, and lower postoperative infection rate.

Summary: Sex is not associated with the prevalence of deep sternal wound infection after cardiac surgery. The incidence of acute renal failure was significantly higher in males compared to females, but there were no significant differences in dialysis rate and in-hospital mortality rate between sexes.

Summary: First-aid for severe traumatic injuries, especially skin defects or visceral rupture, remains a challenge. Hydrogel-based biomaterials have good biocompatibility but lack mechanical and bio-adhesion properties. A multifunctional hydrogel wound dressing is developed using dynamic covalent bonds, metal-catechol chelation, and hydrogen bonds. In vivo evaluation shows its effectiveness in hemostasis, antibacterial activity, and wound healing.

Summary: This study investigates the use of keystone perforator island flap (KPIF) in limb reconstruction and its harvesting technique to minimize donor-site morbidity and achieve optimal functional and cosmetic outcomes. The results show that KPIF is a simple and effective method of wound closure, providing tissues of similar texture to the original muscle and reducing donor site morbidity.

Summary: Studies have shown that differences in muscle activity and activation exist in previously strain-injured limbs, potentially contributing to an elevated risk of reinjury. These differences were most often observed during eccentric contractions and may play a role in the recurrence of muscle strain injuries.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data of 67 male patients and found that penetrating vascular injuries of the lower limbs due to stab wounds had a mortality rate of 3% and led to a major amputation in 4.5% of cases after surgical treatment. Clinical presentation, lesion location, and the need for a vein graft bypass were factors associated with the risk of postoperative limb loss and mortality.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in primary lower incisors, as well as the factors associated with their occurrence and subsequent tooth damage. The results showed a low prevalence of TDI in primary lower incisors, with higher rates in children under 3 years old. Older children had a lower incidence of severe TDI, and there was a higher risk of tooth damage in permanent teeth following severe TDI.

Summary: The study found that vacuum assisted closure therapy may be more beneficial for wound closure and overall survival in patients with Fournier's gangrene compared to conventional dressings. Patients with disseminated Fournier's gangrene who did not receive vacuum assisted closure therapy showed the lowest overall survival rate.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the experience of an urban trauma center in managing lower extremity arterial injuries between 2013 and 2020, and identified factors associated with limb loss. The results showed that patients with blunt trauma and associated fractures and extensive soft tissue injuries were at risk of limb loss. These patients required aggressive soft tissue care, but were still prone to postoperative complications and longer hospital stays.

Summary: This study investigated the role of microbiological swabs in surgical decision-making by evaluating the effects of negative-pressure wound therapy and surgical debridement on bacterial bioburden in hard-to-heal wounds. The results showed that NPWT did not significantly improve bacterial bioburden, while surgical debridement increased bacterial load in some cases. Sterile wound swabs before surgical closure were associated with lower rates of revision surgery.

Summary: This article discusses the application of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in treating abscesses. A case of a 28-year-old male patient with a giant non-resolving hepatic abscess was presented, and the abscess was successfully treated with open debridement followed by NWPT with instillation therapy. The discussion highlights the use of instillation therapy to allow NPWT in the presence of infection or as an adjuvant to surgical infection management.

Summary: This study compared outcomes of full-thickness, meshed free-skin grafts in dogs undergoing single-session versus delayed procedures after tumor excision from distal limbs. Results showed similar graft survival, outcome, and complication rates between the two procedures, with single-session procedures having shorter healing time and fewer bandage changes. Prospective studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Pathological psychologies such as anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are common in female patients scheduled to undergo rhinoplasty. BDD is more likely to be associated with depression. Rhinoplasty has little psychological impact on patients, but female patients with BDD are more likely to be dissatisfied with the surgery.

Summary: This study analyzed complications following cosmetic surgeries managed by plastic surgery services at Heatherwood and Wexham Park hospitals in 2022, including procedures performed internationally. The majority of complications were related to breast cosmetic surgery and abdominoplasties, with the most common complications being wound dehiscence, post-operative infection, and seromas. Turkey was the most popular country selected for surgery, and there is a need to increase public awareness of the risks involved in seeking international options and how to choose suitable clinics.

Summary: The study aims to compare the oncologic, medical, and surgical outcomes of lumpectomy and oncoplastic breast reduction surgery (OBRS) on a national scale. A database was used to analyze patient data and match them based on various factors. The results showed that lumpectomy patients had higher rates of repeat lumpectomy or subsequent mastectomy, while OBRS patients had higher rates of surgical complications but fewer medical complications. Logistic regression analysis revealed that OBRS was associated with a decreased likelihood of repeat lumpectomy. Although OBRS was associated with increased wound complications, medical complications were found to occur less frequently.
