Aquaponics is the combined culture of fish and plants in recirculating systems. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the production of basil out of the aquaponic system by irrigation of the plants with different ratios of hydroponic and aquaponic solutions. Basil seedlings were irrigated three times day(-1) with 200 mL aquaponic-aquaponic-aquaponic (AAA), aquaponic-hydroponic-aquaponic (AHA), hydroponic-aquaponic-hydroponic (HAH), and hydroponic-hydroponic-hydroponic (HHH) solutions, respectively. Fresh and dry mass of shoots and roots of basil decreased at AAA treatment significantly. The plants were slightly less green at AHA treatments, and a visible chlorosis appeared in the leaves of AAA-treated plants. This chlorosis resulted lower net carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance in AAA treatment. Iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and potassium (K) concentrations in leaves decreased and zinc (Zn) concentration increased in higher ratios of aquaponic: hydroponic solution. Lower Fe, Mn, and K concentrations in aquaponic solution may be a main part of the reason for growth reduction.

Responses of seven strawberry cultivars to alkalinity stress under soilless culture system

Mohammad Reza Malekzadeh Shamsabad, Hamid Reza Roosta, Majid Esmaeilizadeh

Summary: The study found that increasing sodium bicarbonate concentration negatively affected strawberry growth and leaf conditions, with certain cultivars showing higher sensitivity to alkalinity stress, particularly Camarosa. Additionally, fruit properties of strawberry were influenced by bicarbonate, with Paros and Camarosa cultivars exhibiting the highest tolerance and sensitivity to alkalinity stress respectively. Furthermore, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, especially PI and F-o, were identified as suitable indicators for evaluating bicarbonate stress in strawberry cultivars, and secondary alkalinity induced stress like salinity and drought may affect these parameters.

Alleviating the adverse effects of salinity and alkalinity stresses on some physiological traits by selenium and silicon foliar applications on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants

Summary: This study found that selenium and silicon application can improve the physiological characteristics of cucumber under salinity and alkalinity stress conditions. They can increase leaf relative water content and total chlorophyll concentration in alkaline stress conditions, while decrease them in saline stress conditions. Selenium and silicon can also increase carotenoids, proline, total soluble sugars, malondialdehyde, protein concentrations, as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase enzymes.

Summary: This experiment investigated the effects of different spectra of complementary light on the growth and development of strawberry plants under salt and alkaline stress conditions. Blue and red light had the greatest effect in reducing stress, and blue/red and white/yellow light had the greatest effect on reproductive traits. Stress conditions increased sodium uptake and decreased potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron uptake.

Nutrient Use in Vertical Farming: Optimal Electrical Conductivity of Nutrient Solution for Growth of Lettuce and Basil in Hydroponic Cultivation

Hadis Hosseini, Vahid Mozafari, Hamid Reza Roosta, Hossein Shirani, Paulien C. H. van de Vlasakker, Mohsen Farhangi

Summary: Vertical farming, utilizing engineered growth environments and hydroponic techniques, has become a popular alternative food production method. This study investigated the impact of different levels of electrical conductivity (EC) in Hoagland nutrient solution on the growth of basil and lettuce cultivars. Results showed that the growth parameters of basil and lettuce were significantly higher with EC levels of 1.2 and 0.9 dS m(-1), despite previous studies recommending higher EC values for optimal growth. However, the concentration of chlorophyll and nitrogen was higher in the full strength nutrient solution with an EC of 2 dS m(-1).

Summary: The study examined the effects of growth media made of peat and different domestic materials on tomato nutrition, growth, and yield as an alternative to cocopeat in Turkiye. It was found that using vermicompost and its mixtures with peat as growth media resulted in the highest leaf and fruit nutrient concentrations. The highest fruit yields and biomass weights were obtained with solely peat and 1:1 peat + vermicompost medium. Peat-containing growth media, especially peat + vermicompost mixtures, can be used as alternatives to cocopeat in soilless tomato cultivation.
