The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of silicon (Si) for alleviating Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation stress based on changes in biomass, physiological attributes and photosynthetic characteristics of two soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivars, Kenjiandou 43 ('K 43') and Zhonghuang 35 ('ZH 35'). The cultivars were raised with and without Si in the greenhouse, and then subjected to ambient, ambient + 2.7 kJ m(-2)d(-1)and ambient + 5.4 kJ m(-2)d(-1)of UV-B radiation. Depending on cultivar, plants suffered severe growth limitations under UV-B radiation, but the application of Si alleviated the adverse effects on growth and development by increasing the stem length, net photosynthetic rate (P-N) and leaf chlorophyll content. Concurrently, it decreased the stomatal conductance (Sc) and intercellular carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration (Ci). In response to the UV-B radiation stress, the antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased by 41.2-72.7%, peroxidases (POD) by 49.5-85.7%, malodialdehyde (MDA) by 6.7-20.4% and soluble protein by 4.2-7.6%. The overall results indicated that media treatment with Si might improve soybean growth under elevated UV-B radiation through positive changes in biomass and some physiological attributes that were dependent on cultivar.

Xia

Summary: Two low-lying unbound states in C-16 were investigated using deuteron inelastic scattering in inverse kinematics. In addition to the previously measured 2(-) state at 5.45 MeV in a 1n knockout reaction, a new resonant state at 6.89 MeV was observed for the first time. The inelastic scattering angular distributions of these states were well reproduced by the distorted-wave Born approximation calculation with an l = 1 excitation. The spin-parities of the unbound states were tentatively assigned based on shell model calculations using the modified YSOX interaction.

Summary: In this study, using multi-source remote sensing data, the accounting framework of the ecosystem service value (ESV) of paddy field ecosystems (PFEs) was improved, and the ESV was mapped at a detailed level. The results showed that the ESV of PFEs is much higher than their production value, with climate regulation having the highest value. Baodi district had the highest ESV, with a significant number of hot spots, while Ninghe district had more cold spots.

Shuai Wang, Xuelian Huang, Tao Wen, Xun Wang, He Wang, Yongjie Han, Zhiwei Li, Jian Kuang, Shihua Qi

Summary: The study on whether there is a magma chamber under Wudalianchi is of great significance for the theory of plate tectonics, early warning of volcano eruption and geothermal exploration. The research findings show that there is excess noble gases in the shallow groundwater, indicating possible boiling events underground. This supports the recent results of geophysical survey works that suggest the existence of a potential magma chamber under Weishan area.

Influence of multiple Coulomb scattering on accuracy of muontransmission imaging of small-scale matter br

Jian-Ming Zhang, Zhi-Wei Li, Fang Liu, Jing-Tai Li, Xin Mao, Ya-Ping Cheng, Jie Peng, Xin-Zhuo Feng, Si-Dao Ni, Xiao-Ping Ouyang, Ran Han

Summary: The muon transmission imaging method is a non-destructive detection imaging method that analyzes the flux change of cosmic ray muon to obtain the internal density structure of the target object. However, multiple Coulomb scattering can cause deviation of muons from their straight paths, which may affect the accuracy of muon transmission imaging. This study uses Monte Carlo simulation to analyze the effect of multiple scattering on transmission imaging accuracy.

Composition and Evolution of Continental Crust at Orogenic Belts: Constraints From a 3-D Crustal Model of Southeast China

Yao Sun, Ruohan Gao, Zhiwei Li, Andong Wang, Ran Han, Yufei Xi, Jingao Liu

Summary: The chemical composition of continental crust is fundamental in understanding its origin and evolution. However, the chemical compositions of orogenic belts, which make up 30% of the global continental crust, are still poorly understood. This study provides an estimate of the crustal composition of the Southeast China orogenic belt using a 3-D crustal model. The results show that the Southeast China has one of the most evolved continental crust compositions compared to other estimates. Chemical weathering is identified as the main process modifying the composition of the upper continental crust, while intracrustal differentiation and chemical weathering together control the composition of the bulk continental crust. Orogenic belts like the Southeast China can develop highly evolved crustal compositions due to extensive intracrustal reworking, enhanced chemical weathering, and potential removal of thickened crustal roots. An overall estimation of the average composition of the continental crust should take into account the evolved composition of orogenic belts.

Deciphering transcriptional mechanisms of maize internodal elongation by regulatory network analysis

Zhaobin Ren, Yingru Liu, Lu Li, Xing Wang, Yuyi Zhou, Mingcai Zhang, Zhaohu Li, Fei Yi, Liusheng Duan

Summary: Transcriptome analysis of maize cultivars with different responses to coronatine treatment identified gene regulatory networks controlling internode extension. The lengths of the basal internodes are crucial for maize lodging resistance. RNA-sequencing of the eighth internode of 10 cultivars treated with coronatine revealed 7895 genes involved in internode elongation, including 777 transcription factors. Strong-inhibition cultivars showed down-regulation of genes related to cytokinin, gibberellin, auxin, and ethylene, as well as changes in cell-cycle regulatory factors and cell wall-related genes, leading to severe inhibition of internode elongation. Additionally, the study explored the direct regulatory relationship between ZmABI7 and ZmMYB117 transcription factors and their target genes, ZmCYC1, ZmCYC3, ZmCYC7, and ZmCPP1. The transcriptome data will serve as a valuable resource for studying maize internode development and genetic control of internode length for improved lodging resistance.

Summary: Measurements of inelastic excitation and cluster-decay reactions for H-2(C-16,C-16* -> He-4 + Be-12 or He-6 + Be-10) H-2 at a beam energy of 23.5 MeV/u have been conducted. The study reveals the energy, decay paths, and molecular configurations of resonances in C-16. The results indicate the presence of a positive-parity (3/2(pi)(-))(2)(1/2(sigma)(-))(2)-bond linear-chain molecular band and a pure sigma-bond linear-chain configuration in C-16.

Summary: In this study, the low-lying positive-parity states in Be-12 were investigated for the first time using a radioactive beam B-13 at 23 MeV/nucleon via the (2)H(B-13, He-3) reaction. The spectroscopic factors and excitation energies of these states were found to be in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the shell model. In addition to two bound states, a resonant state was observed at an energy of 4.8 +/- 0.1 MeV with an intrinsic width of 0.42 +/- 0.28 MeV. This resonance primarily decays via one neutron to the bound states in 11Be and is likely correlated to the previously observed state at 1.24 MeV in one-proton removal reaction. The spin-parity of 2(+) was tentatively assigned to this resonance based on the analysis of its angular distributions and theoretical calculations, including shell model and Gamow coupled-channel approach.
