KCNQ Current Contributes to Inspiratory Burst Termination in the Pre-Botzinger Complex of Neonatal Rats in vitro

Ann L. Revill, Alexis Katzell, Christopher A. Del Negro, William K. Milsom, Gregory D. Funk

Summary: Recording KCNQ-like currents in neonatal rat slices with retained respiratory rhythmicity, the study found that blocking KCNQ channels significantly increased inspiratory burst duration, while activation of KCNQ channels decreased it.

Transcriptomes of electrophysiologically recorded Dbx1-derived respiratory neurons of the preBotzinger complex in neonatal mice

Prajkta S. Kallurkar, Maria Cristina D. Picardo, Yae K. Sugimura, Margaret S. Saha, Gregory D. Conradi Smith, Christopher A. Del Negro

Summary: This study investigates whether rhythm- and pattern-generating functions exist in different classes of Dbx1 preBotC neurons. The results reveal that putatively rhythmogenic Type-1 neurons activate before Type-2 neurons and the inspiratory motor output. Transcriptome analysis identified differential expression of genes, including ionotropic receptors and Ca2+ signaling pathways, which may explain their activation profiles and involvement in inspiratory bursts. Surprisingly, neuropeptide receptors that influence breathing were only sparsely expressed in these neuron types.

Breathing Rhythm and Pattern and Their Influence on Emotion

Sufyan Ashhad, Kaiwen Kam, Christopher A. Del Negro, Jack L. Feldman

Summary: Breathing is a vital behavior that has a broad influence on the brain and body. Recent advances in understanding the neural control system of breathing, called the breathing central pattern generator (bCPG), have revealed its complexity and its connections to emotions and cognition. These findings bring great potential for further research on the function and dysfunction of breathing and other neural circuits in mammals.

Role of NaV1.6-mediated persistent sodium current and bursting-pacemaker properties in breathing rhythm generation

Carlos A. da Silva Jr, Cameron J. Grover, Maria Cristina D. Picardo, Christopher A. Del Negro

Summary: The Scn8a gene plays a crucial role in respiratory control by regulating the Na+ current, impacting the rhythm generation in respiratory interneurons. However, it does not affect breathing in adult mice. This finding is significant for understanding respiratory development and rhythmic function.
