The longitudinal low frequency acoustic and optic phonon modes of 2H-NbSe2 have been determined for the Gamma - M direction with inelastic neutron scattering at 50 K close to the charge density wave transition temperature. We found a softening of the two low frequency modes which are attributed to the same symmetry close to the charge density wavevector. We also found indications that the anomalous frequency seems to soften further for off-symmetry directions.

Flexible Sample Environment for the Investigation of Soft Matter at the European Spallation Source: Part II-The GISANS Setup

Summary: The FlexiProb project is a collaboration between three soft matter groups at universities in Germany with scientific support from various institutions. They developed a flexible sample carrier system for small-angle neutron scattering at the ESS and a sample environment for studying soft matter thin films with GISANS. Test experiments proved the concept and functionality of the setup.

Summary: In order to exploit the potential of the new European Spallation Source in Lund, researchers have developed plug and play sample environments for different soft matter samples using a general carrier platform and unified connectors for software integration and control. This allows for reduced downtimes of instruments related to changing sample environments.

Combined Arrhenius-Merz Law Describing Domain Relaxation in Type-II Multiferroics

J. Stein, S. Biesenkamp, T. Cronert, T. Froehlich, J. Leist, K. Schmalzl, A. C. Komarek, M. Braden

Summary: The domain relaxation process in multiferroic TbMnO3 single crystals under different electric fields and temperatures can be described by a combination of activation law and Merz law, with just two parameters to explain the relaxation times. The domain inversion process is mainly controlled by domain wall motion, with other mechanisms causing accelerated inversion near the multiferroic transition.

Summary: The ESS in Lund, Sweden, is set to be the leading neutron source with a focus on SANS experiments. A collaboration between German universities and ESS has resulted in the development of a unified SE system to minimize downtime and ensure efficient experiment setup. The SE for foam SANS experiments has been successfully tested under ESS conditions, allowing control of foam formation, temperature, and measurement position.

Magnetic-field-controlled spin fluctuations and quantum critically in Sr3Ru2O7

C. Lester, S. Ramos, R. S. Perry, T. P. Croft, M. Laver, R. I. Bewley, T. Guidi, A. Hiess, A. Wildes, E. M. Forgan, S. M. Hayden

Summary: As Sr3Ru2O7 approaches its critical magnetic field B-c, it displays typical and critical-point-related electronic heat capacity behavior, which can be attributed to scattering by spin fluctuations; as it enters the adjacent spin-density wave ordered phase, these fluctuations become stronger, suggesting that the order is stabilized through an order-by-disorder mechanism.

Phonon softening in Lu(Pt1-xPdx)2In close to a zero-temperature structural instability

Summary: The superstructure and phonon softening in Lu(Pt0.5Pd0.5)2In indicate a continuous CDW transition, with the importance of critical fluctuations. The observed phonon dispersion relations are similar to theoretical calculations, but the softening occurs in a narrower momentum range.

Complex magnetic structure and spin waves of the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn5Si3

N. Biniskos, F. J. dos Santos, K. Schmalzl, S. Raymond, M. dos Santos Dias, J. Persson, N. Marzari, S. Bluegel, S. Lounis, T. Brueckel

Summary: This study investigates the magnetic exchange couplings, spin configurations, and magnon dispersion relations of the noncollinear antiferromagnetic phase of Mn5Si3 using inelastic neutron scattering measurements and density functional theory calculations. Additionally, the evolution of the spin texture under an external magnetic field and the field-induced phase transitions are explored. The study also reveals that magnetic moments in a frustrated arrangement can be tuned by a magnetic field.
