The anisotropy of uniaxial ferrimagnetic Er2Fe14Si3 subjected to heating successively changes from easy-cone to easy-axis and eventually to easy-plane. The anisotropy constants K-1 and K-2 evaluated by means of the Sucksmith-Thompson method have been used to establish the domain of existence of the first-order magnetization process observed in the single-crystal sample. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) directly measured in the regions of easy-axis and easy-plane anisotropy was found to be-0.28 K and 0.2 K, respectively, with a field change of 1.2 T, provided that the field is perpendicular to the direction of easy magnetization. These values were satisfactorily compared with ones estimated via the thermodynamic model.

Summary: Metal dihalides, such as NiBr2, exhibit promising semiconducting and magnetic behavior on Au(111) substrates, showing potential for applications in tunneling junctions and low-dimensional devices. Experiments using various techniques revealed competing layer structures of NiBr2 at the interface, with a magnetically ordered state below 27K attributed to a non-collinear magnetic structure in the single layer.

Basalt fibre surface modification via plasma polymerization of tetravinylsilane/oxygen mixtures for improved interfacial adhesion with unsaturated polyester matrix

Summary: By using plasma polymerization technique, polymeric coatings synthesized on the surface of basalt fibres significantly improved the interlaminar shear strength of composites. Successful deposition of polymer sizing was confirmed by the increase in carbon and oxygen peaks. Single fibre dynamic contact angle tests indicated that the increase in basalt fibre surface energy is correlated with the improvement in interfacial adhesion.

Summary: Diodes are important elements in electronics and optics, and their evolution towards low dissipation electronics has led to the development of supercurrent diodes with zero resistance in one direction. In this study, researchers demonstrate a superconducting tunnel diode with zero conductance in one direction by utilizing a thin ferromagnetic insulator. This cryogenic spintronic rectifier shows promise in highly-sensitive radiation detection and future low-dissipation and fast superconducting electronics.

Summary: We identify and manipulate commonly occurring defects in black phosphorus using scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and density functional theory calculations. We found a ubiquitous defect and determined its atomic origin, and demonstrated that its configuration and magnetic properties can be modified by applying electrical pulses. By analyzing the states projected onto individual layers, we obtained more detailed information about bias-dependent features in the STM images.

Coexistence of superconductivity and spin-splitting fields in superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator bilayers of arbitrary thickness

Summary: The research focuses on the spin splitting phenomenon in ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor bilayers and its significance for superconducting spintronics and Majorana fermion realization. The study determines the impact of the thickness of the superconductor layer on the magnitude of spin splitting, as well as the range of parameters suitable for coexisting exchange field and superconductivity. By comparing theory with experimental results, the accuracy and importance of the theory are confirmed.
