We report on in situ UV-vis spectroscopic measurement during the electrodeposition of silicon, germanium, and silicon-germanium alloys from an ionic liquid. From the spectroscopic analysis, the potential-dependent formation and growth of Ge, Si, and SixGe1-x nanoparticles were evaluated. The possible formation of adlayers and an underpotential deposition of Si also discussed.
