Summary: A new series of cyclometalating ligands with bulky substituents are designed and synthesized. These gold(III) complexes exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields and short excited-state lifetimes in the solid state at room temperature. Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on these complexes show promising electroluminescence performances with high external quantum efficiencies and efficiency roll-offs. The mercury-free synthesis and record-long operational lifetimes make these complexes potential emitting materials for practical OLEDs.

Summary: A series of cationic and neutral p-Br and p-NO2 pyridine substituted Eu(III) and Gd(III) coordination complexes serve as versatile synthetic intermediates. The introduction of various substituents is made possible through nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions, leading to the tuning of absorption and emission spectral properties in Eu(III) complexes. The p-substituent in Gd(III) complexes does not significantly affect EPR properties, making them suitable as EPR spin probes for biomolecules.

Summary: A new type of cytotoxicity descriptors based on the Cu(II) coordination ability of p-substituted phenols and subsequent O -> Cu electron density transfer has been introduced. The geometries of phenols and their Cu(II) complexes were optimized at the DFT level, with the amount of electron density transfer evaluated using copper charge or electron density Laplacian at the Cu-O bond critical point. The Cu-phenol interaction energy serves as a measure of phenol reactivity, and statistical parameters for the linear dependence of published cytotoxicity data on these predictors show significant improvement over classical parameters.

Summary: In this study, a rational design of a new collection of chiral phosphines featuring a C-N axial chirality is presented. These phosphines were successfully applied in the enantioselective synthesis of highly steric hindered tetra-ortho-substituted biaryls. It was found that the carbazolyl framework played a crucial role in facilitating the reaction through a fleeting Pd-N/Pd-pi coordination.

Summary: This study investigates the co-crystallization of gallic acid with pyridines and their polyaromatic analogue, quinoline, and explores the formation of new crystalline products. The introduction of proton-donating groups in the pyridine compound greatly favors the formation of the acid-pyridine heterosynthon in the co-crystals/salts, instead of the acid-acid homosynthon. This modification has the potential to reduce polymorphism and design new pharmaceuticals and crystalline materials.
