Summary: This study aimed to compare five different methods for extracting high molecular weight DNA from abaca leaves, with Protocol 3 (CTAB with 0.3% beta-mercaptoethanol) found to be the simplest and most consistent method for producing high quality DNA for sequencing applications. Protocol 4 (sodium dodecyl sulfate) was determined to have the shortest processing time, and when combined with TissueLyserII-facilitated homogenization, it is the most suitable combination for high-throughput extraction of abaca samples for genotyping-by-sequencing strategies.

Summary: This study reports the gelation of human serum albumin (HSA) in aqueous solutions of cationic surfactant CTAB or anionic surfactant SDS. Increasing CTAB concentration accelerated HSA gelation, while increasing SDS concentration inhibited HSA gelation. The rheological and kinetic properties of HSA hydrogels were significantly influenced by the presence of cationic CTAB and anionic SDS surfactants.

Summary: This study investigates the network structure and rheological behavior of Cellulose Nanocrystal (CNC) suspension in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) both below and above the critical micelle concentration (CMC). Through TEM imaging and rheological characterization, it was found that CNC-CTAB gels exhibit shear thinning behavior, with a complex relationship between strain amplitudes and CTAB concentration affecting the network structure and performance.

Summary: In this study, asphaltene removal from silica surface using shear forces of aqueous media in a parallel plate channel was investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of asphaltene varied with different pH and surfactant conditions in the aqueous media. Cationic surfactant was found to significantly improve the removal efficiency, while anionic surfactant was ineffective.

Summary: Controlling the stability of oil-in-water emulsions is a key focus for scientists studying colloidal systems. Carbon dots have gained significant interest as smart materials due to their exceptional physicochemical properties and versatile applications. This study presents advanced and switchable O/W emulsions stabilized by the combined effect of the cationic surfactant CTAB and similarly charged CDs. The formulated emulsion shows universal stabilizing effects for a range of oil phases and can be switched between stable and unstable modes by adding anionic surfactant SDBS, with potential applications in water purification, pharmaceuticals, protein recognition, and catalysis.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized high-quality gold nanorods with widths ranging from 6.5 nm to 175 nm by introducing heptanol molecules as secondary templating agents, demonstrating the generality and versatility of the synthesis strategy for Au NRs. The use of vertically aligned arrays of Au NRs as SERS substrates allows for rapid detection and identification of residual harmful substances with good reliability and reproducibility.

Summary: Due to the ease of tailoring the physicochemical properties, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have varying capabilities for surfactant self-assembly depending on the surfactant headgroup charge. This study investigated the self-aggregation process of three surfactants (SDS, CTAB, and TX-100) dissolved in DESs composed of a lanthanide salt and urea. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) was obtained using a fluorescence probe, electrical conductance, and surface tension measurements. The results showed that the CACs varied for different surfactants and compositions of DESs, and the thermodynamic parameters revealed the driving forces for self-aggregation.

Summary: An efficient deep eutectic solvent (DES), synthesized using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethylene glycol (EG), was used to enhance enzymatic saccharification of rape straw (RS). The optimized pretreatment parameters showed that the DES selectively removed lignin and xylan while preserving cellulose. DES pretreatment resulted in an increased enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of RS by 46.0% due to the removal of 62.2% lignin and 53.2% xylan. The study also revealed that DES pretreatment improved cellulosic accessibility, reduced lignin hydrophobicity and surface area, and caused migration of cellulosic crystalline structure, contributing to enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. Overall, this study presented an emerging method for the effective fractionation and valorization of lignocellulosic biomass within biorefinery technology.

Summary: The emergence of superconductivity and a charge density wave phase in air-stable organic cation intercalated MoS2 crystals is reported. The properties of the correlated electronic phases are shown to depend dramatically on the intercalated cation, demonstrating the potential of organic ion intercalation to finely tune the properties of 2D materials. Organic-ion intercalated MoS2 is established as a platform to study the emergence and modulation of correlated electronic phases.

Summary: A method for visualizing and quantifying surfactant effectiveness in different electrolyte environments using reconfigurable Janus emulsions as optical probes is presented. The effect of different types and concentrations of salt counter-ions on the surfactant surface excess was investigated for both ionic and non-ionic surfactants. It was found that the interfacial tensions of the ionic surfactants varied significantly, while the effect on the non-ionic surfactant was less pronounced. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of Janus emulsions as powerful tools for studying surfactant properties at liquid interfaces.

Summary: This study investigates the solution structures in a mixed surfactant system of SDS and DDAO in water. The size, shape, and interactions of micelles are characterized, and the formation of disk-like aggregates within the biphasic region is observed. The stoichiometry and solution pH have significant effects on the synergistic interaction of mixed surfactants and their impact on phase equilibrium and associated structures.

Summary: This study investigated the counterion association between diphenhydramine hydrochloride (DPC) and chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM) with anionic sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS). The results showed that the interaction between the drugs and the surfactant was mainly controlled by electrostatic forces. Furthermore, it was found that the binding of CPM to STS micelles was stronger than that of DPC.

Summary: Delivery of a nanoparticle-mediated full-length mouse or human genomic rhodopsin locus can effectively rescue rod photoreceptor degeneration in a mouse model of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa. The use of an intact genomic locus as a transgene is more successful compared to cDNA treatment, highlighting the significance of gene augmentation using regulatory elements.
