Summary: In this study, a novel kinetic model was developed to enrich the elementary reactions related to transformation products (TPs) in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The entire reaction pathways from parent organic compounds to TPs were mapped using density functional theory (DFT). The predicted concentrations of nitro-TPs obtained from the model matched previous research results, confirming the accuracy of the predictions. This research highlights the effectiveness of combining DFT and kinetic modeling in understanding TP formation and decay mechanisms in AOPs.

Summary: In this study, a technique combining O-3, H2O2, and a catalyst was evaluated for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOX. The use of catalyst + O-3 + H2O2 showed promising results in removing SO2 and NOX under neutral pH, temperature close to 300-320 K, and 0.2 mol/L H2O2 concentration.

Summary: The nitrogen-doped carbonized ZIF-8 with hierarchically porous structure is proposed as a carrier of Sn catalyst to enhance electron transfer and CO2 adsorption capacity. The interaction between ZIF-8 and Sn improves the conductivity and electron transfer efficiency, leading to significantly higher catalytic activity for CO2 reduction reaction compared to commercial Sn and other Sn-based catalysts.

Summary: A palladium(ii) hydride complex supported by a benzene-based PNCNP pincer ligand has been synthesized via two different routes and exhibits strong deprotonating ability and versatile catalytic activity. It can readily deprotonate acetamide to form the corresponding acetamido complex and catalyze the dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde under mild conditions, as well as the direct hydration of nitriles to primary amides. The direct hydration of nitriles catalyzed by this complex is the most efficient palladium catalytic system for this type of reaction, achieving 100% selectivity and good to excellent yields.

Summary: Sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) based oxidation has great potential in wastewater treatment by transforming ammonium (NH4+) into nitrophenolic byproducts. The reaction mechanism leading to the formation of nitrophenolic byproducts, as well as the transformation of aromatic carboxylate moieties to phenolics by SO4 center dot-, has been demonstrated in the study. The widespread formation of nitrophenolic byproducts when using SO4 center dot- for onsite remediation highlights the importance of considering this factor in evaluating the feasibility of the technology.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the formation mechanism of nitro byproducts of anthracene (ANT) during the electrokinetic (EK) chemical oxidation process. The formation of nitro-byproducts, including 14 different kinds, were observed and their nitration pathways were proposed and described. These nitro-byproducts, which have enhanced acute toxicity, mutagenic effects, and potential threat to the ecosystem, should be further studied during the EK process.

Summary: Catalytic combustion is a promising technology for improving combustion efficiency and reducing environmental pollution, with the investigation of CO2 + C2H3 combustion reaction under catalytic combustion being meaningful in mitigating environmental damage. The study reveals that catalytic combustion on Pd(100) and Cu(100) surfaces has only two reaction paths, producing different products compared to conventional gas-phase combustion reactions. Overall, the research provides insights into the mechanism of CO2 and C2H3 reaction on Pd(100) and Cu(100) surfaces, opening up avenues for further research on catalytic combustion mechanisms and pollutant emission control.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanism through which nitrite affects Fenton reactions in meat products by increasing the availability of Fe3+, facilitating its reduction and stabilizing Fe2+, and accelerating Fe3+/Fe2+ cycling, leading to exacerbated oxidative and nitrosative stress on proteins.

Summary: The study investigates the reaction of nitrate radicals with substituted catechols, which are emitted to the atmosphere during wildfires and combustion processes. The results show that nitrocatechols, major constituents of atmospheric brown carbon, are rapidly generated through two proposed mechanisms. The findings explain the interfacial production of chromophoric nitrocatechols and their impact on the absorption properties of tropospheric particles, affecting the Earth's radiative forcing.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of nitrite on the degradation of carbamazepine through heat activated peroxydisulfate oxidation. The presence of nitrite not only reduces the degradation rate but also changes the degradation pathway. Nitroacridines and nitrophenols were identified as products during the degradation process, highlighting the potential environmental risks of using persulfate to degrade carbamazepine in the presence of nitrite.

Summary: Lignin, as a major component of woody biomass, is a natural organic polymer and the only abundant natural renewable resource with aromatic nucleus. Chemical catalysis induced depolymerization and photocatalysis and electrocatalysis are effective methods for lignin utilization. In this contribution, the radical and (photo)electron transfer induced reaction mechanisms of lignin depolymerization are discussed, along with the challenges and opportunities of photo(electro)catalysis in lignin valorization.

Summary: The lockdown in Greece due to COVID-19 resulted in improved air quality, with reductions in nitrogen dioxide and ozone levels attributed to decreased vehicular emissions. However, there were uncertainties in some time periods. This provides policymakers with the opportunity to implement targeted measures to further reduce emissions and meet international air quality standards.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal changes in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) tropospheric vertical column density during the COVID-19 pandemic in six different countries. Significant declines in relative differences were observed in most countries, except for the US. The post-lockdown period saw a rebound in NO2 columns in most countries, except for India where the impact of COVID-19 continued to influence NO levels.

Summary: A mild, efficient, and green approach for the selective synthesis of 1,5-dinitronaphthalene (1,5-DNN) was developed using a solid superacid S2O82-/Fe-ZrO2 catalyst combined with NO2 and O-2-Ac2O. The optimized reaction conditions led to a conversion rate of 96.8% for 1-NN and a selectivity of 62.6% for 1,5-DNN. The excellent catalytic activity of S2O82-/Fe-ZrO2 can be attributed to its Lewis acid sites and strong acidity. This work provides a practical strategy for the cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient synthesis of 1,5-DNN with significant industrial application prospects.
