Summary: The authors use computational simulations to uncover the molecular mechanism of photoactivation in phytochromes, the photoreceptors responsible for sensing light in plants, fungi, and bacteria. They find that chromophore-protein interactions play a crucial role in controlling the mechanism and timescale of the photoisomerization process.

Summary: This article reports the visible light induced deoxygenation of sulfoxides to sulfides using anthraquinone as the catalyst under irradiation at 430-440 nm at room temperature. Cheap isopropanol is utilized as a green reducing agent. Various sulfoxides are successfully deoxygenated to sulfides with satisfactory yields. A photocatalytic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway is proposed based on the experimental results.

Summary: This study developed a hierarchical Cu3SnS4-Cu2SnS3/N-doped carbon hollow nanocapsules (CTS/N-C HNCs) through a one-step sulfurization route. The CTS/N-C HNC electrode exhibited high capacity, superior long-cycling performance, and outstanding rate performance as an anode material. The results suggest that the CTS/N-C HNCs composites with a hollow structure, outer assembled nanosheets, and N-doped carbon layer are beneficial for controlled volume changes and electron/Li+ transport during the intercalation/deintercalation process. This research provides a facile strategy for constructing CTS-based hierarchical composites, contributing to the further development of lithium-ion batteries.

Summary: The corresponding Al(mu-O)M complexes were isolated by the reaction of compounds containing Al-Mg and Al-Zn bonds with N2O. Electronic structure analysis revealed mainly ionic Al-O and O-M bonds in these complexes, featuring an anionic mu-oxo centre. The reaction with CO2 confirmed that these species correspond to the proposed intermediates in the formation of mu-carbonate compounds.

Summary: In this paper, a catalyst composed of Pt nanoparticles assembled on a two-dimensional Co6Mo6C nanosheets/reduced graphene oxide hybrid (Pt/Co6Mo6C NSs-G) is designed, showing remarkable activity enhancement and durability improvement in the oxygen reduction reaction. The unique 2D structure of Co6Mo6C nanosheets and the electron coupling interaction between Pt nanoparticles and Co6Mo6C NSs-G are the key factors contributing to the enhanced ORR performance.

Summary: This study reports a visible-light-induced decarbonylative addition of benzaldehydes to ketones/aldehydes at room temperature, promoted by CsF, resulting in moderate to excellent yields of tertiary/secondary alcohols. The mechanistic investigation revealed that the reaction proceeds through photoexcitation-decarbonylation of the aldehyde followed by its addition to ketones/aldehydes, as verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Summary: A complex mechanism involving the generation of an intermediate ketocarbene, which adds to the cyclopentadienone to give an isolable tricyclic intermediate, followed by thermal rearrangements, is proposed to explain the formation of the product in the reaction of 2-(trimethylsilyl)thiophen-3-yl triflate with CsF in the presence of 2,3,4,5-tetraphenylcyclopentadienone. The intermediacy of the hypothesized 5-membered hetaryne is discarded based on detailed experimental and computational studies, suggesting a different pathway for the reaction.

Summary: This work successfully synthesized CdS nanoflowers coated with zero-dimensional MMoS4 cocatalysts. Among them, the 2.5%-NiMoS4/CdS catalyst showed the best photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution under visible light, with an activity 10.1 times higher than that of pure CdS. The excellent performance is mainly attributed to the existence of an internal electric field (IEF), which greatly accelerates the separation of electron-hole pairs.

Summary: This article introduces several ways to electronically synchronize different types of amplified femtosecond laser systems using a single freely programmable electronics hardware. These methods allow for rapid probing of a wide range of timescales in a single transient absorption experiment without the need to move any delay stage. The approach is versatile and can synchronize different lasers, such as a Ti:Sa amplifier and a 100 kHz Yb-laser system. The time-resolution in the transient experiment ranges from 1 to 3 ps, depending on the method.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Au-Pd bimetallic electrocatalysts exhibit superior selectivity in CO2 reduction reaction, converting CO2 efficiently to CO and providing effective reaction sites. In addition, single Pd embedded on Au(111) can adjust adsorption strength, aiding in further reduction of CO to methanol and methane.

Summary: Bimetallic synergistic catalysis is an effective strategy for synthesizing oxazolones in organic synthesis. The mechanism of the [Au-Pd] bimetallic catalyst-catalyzed oxazolone synthesis was studied using DFT calculations, and the catalytic performances of various bimetallic catalysts were evaluated. The reaction involves a cycloisomerization step catalyzed by [Au], followed by a cycle catalyzed by [Pd(0)], with the reductive elimination step being the rate-determining step.

Summary: This article presents a simple and exciting strategy to synthesize novel terrylene diimide derivatives with absorption and intense emission in the near-IR through precise functionalization. The symmetrically substituted terrylene diimides show impressive emission quantum yields, and minimal structural distortion is found to be correlated with the emission characteristics. Additionally, a two-tiered TDI-carbazole compound with intense emission in the near-IR is reported.

Summary: Here, we report the first examples of air-stable, deep-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) polycyclic aromatic molecules with emission in the near-infrared (NIR) region, achieved through nitration. Despite the non-emissive nature of nitroaromatics, the choice of a relatively electron-rich terrylene core allowed for fluorescence in these molecules. The degree of nitration directly influenced the stability of the LUMOs. The tetra-nitrated terrylene diimide exhibited the lowest LUMO (<=-4.5 eV) of -5.0 eV vs. Fc/Fc(+), making it the lowest among larger RDIs. These are also the only examples of emissive nitro-RDIs, with larger quantum yields.
