Summary: This study isolated and identified compounds from the bark of Croton guatemalensis. The structures and configurations were determined and a HPLC method for quantifying rutin was developed. Affinity-directed fractionation and in silico analysis revealed that ent-clerodane diterpenoids were active compounds inhibiting alpha-glucosidases from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Summary: Two new compounds and one new derivative, as well as five known compounds, were isolated from Croton crassifolius. Crassifolin X, one of the new compounds, is a novel clerodane diterpenoid with a unique lactone core. The structures and absolute configurations were determined using spectroscopic methods and experiments. Additionally, several compounds exhibited potential anti-neuroinflammatory activity.

Summary: 16 alkaloids, including 11 new hasubanan alkaloids and five known alkaloids, were isolated from the alkaloidal extract of Stephania longa through 1H NMR-guided fractionation. The structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configurations were established by comparing experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Compound 3 and compound 12 showed stronger antineuroinflammatory effects than minocycline against NO production on LPS-activated BV2 cells.

Summary: The leaves of Campomanesia lineatifolia, an edible plant in the Brazilian Forest, have been traditionally used for treating gastrointestinal disorders. The phenolic-rich ethanol extract (PEE) from C. lineatifolia leaves showed significant anti-inflammatory activity. The study aimed to identify the chemical composition of PEE and evaluate its potential in treating gastrointestinal disorders.

Summary: Inspired by the allelopathetic effects of Xanthium orientale subsp. italicum, bioassay-guided isolation was used to identify its antitumor constituents and clarify the chemical basis of its multitarget activity. Among the compounds isolated, six active ones exhibited significant cytotoxicity against HepG two and A549 cells, providing a chemical basis for the genus Xanthium's multitarget and synergistic anticancer activity. The study's methodology could be useful for further research and development in cancer therapy using X. orientale.

Summary: Inflammation is the body's defense mechanism against external and internal stimuli. However, an inappropriate immune response can lead to chronic diseases. Phytotherapy, especially raw materials with a long tradition of use, may play a role in alleviating inflammatory processes. This study aims to analyze the phytochemicals in ash leaves and evaluate their effects on anti-inflammatory cytokines in monocyte/macrophage cells.

Summary: Apetalic acid isolated from Calophyllum polyanthum leaves exhibits significant anti-tumor activity, particularly against colon cancer cells. It functions by regulating the expression of apoptosis-related genes and proteins. This supports its potential use in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.

Summary: The anecdotal use of Alternanthera sessilis L., a plant known for its anti-diabetic properties in the Philippines, is also documented in other countries. This study aims to identify the compounds responsible for its anti-hyperglycemic activity. The ethyl acetate subfraction of A. sessilis leaves showed significant suppression of blood glucose rise in diabetic mice, with luteolin, apigenin, ononin, and sophorabioside identified as potential compounds responsible for its anti-hyperglycemic activity. These findings provide a basis for the traditional claims and potential use of A. sessilis leaves as a source of anti-hyperglycemic agents.

Summary: The aim of this study was to optimize the extraction process and purification of main components from crabapple in order to obtain effective fractions with high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects of three variables including ethanol concentration, solid-liquid ratio, and extraction temperature were investigated and optimized using response surface methodology and Box-Behnken design. The adsorption/desorption characteristics of the main components on different types of macroporous resins were also studied. The results suggest that the purified active fraction from crabapple could be a potential source for natural products and food industries due to its high contents of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Summary: A combination of techniques was used to isolate phytochemicals with anticholinesterase activity from Phyllanthus muellarianus. Magnoflorine and nitidine were identified as active components from different subfractions and showed potent inhibitory effects on cholinesterases. Nitidine demonstrated comparable potency to the commercial anti-Alzheimer drug galanthamine and also showed weak antiaggregating activity against amyloid-beta self-aggregation.
