Immunization of animals is one of the key standards for evaluation of vaccine efficacy prior to human clinical trials. However, vaccine organizations should not over-interpret these results as protective efficacy in animals may not be relevant in humans. Screening of vaccine candidates has recently been performed by several in vitro human models. A properly designed in vitro approach opens new venues for vaccine development.
