Summary: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal myeloproliferative disease characterized by the presence of the BCR-ABL fusion gene. Treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) such as imatinib mesylate (IM) has significantly improved clinical outcomes for CML patients, but IM resistance remains a major challenge. The cause of IM resistance in CML cells is unclear, but additional genetic alterations in leukemic stem cells (LSCs) are a common cause of relapse. A study found that a rare subpopulation of stem cells called very small embryonic-like stem cells (VSELs) in adult CML patients is resistant to IM and less sensitive to apoptosis compared to leukemic hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The expression levels of certain miRNAs are also affected in these IM-resistant VSELs, including miR-126 and miR-21, which are involved in LSC leukemia-initiating capacity and growth.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) among Korean chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as dasatinib, imatinib, and nilotinib. The results showed that not only dasatinib, but also imatinib and nilotinib could induce PH in CML patients. Risk factors for developing PH included age over 60, dasatinib treatment, and positive cardiopulmonary symptoms/signs at the time of transthoracic echocardiography.

Summary: In this study, the bis-ketone moiety of curcumin (CUR) was replaced to obtain more stable derivatives 2 and 22. The evaluation of their chemical-physical characteristics and cell experiments showed that derivatives 2 and 22 had better bioavailability and stability than CUR, and exhibited significant cytotoxicity and pro-apoptotic effects on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells. Moreover, derivative 22 was able to reverse drug resistance in CML cells resistant to imatinib (IM).

Summary: In this study, a questionnaire was used to investigate the late effects in survivors of allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML). The results showed that approximately 83% of the survivors experienced more than one late effect, including endocrine, dental, skin, ophthalmologic, musculoskeletal, pulmonary, neurocognitive, and cardiovascular dysfunction. The prevalence of short stature, pulmonary, cardiovascular, and nephrological complications was significantly higher among survivors who were more than 12 years post-HSCT. Therefore, establishing a multidisciplinary follow-up system for survivors of JMML is crucial.

Summary: A 77-year-old man presented with cough, pharyngeal discomfort, and weight loss for 1 month. Chest radiography showed a mass shadow in the right upper lung field. Bronchoscopy revealed multiple white nodules along the tracheal cartilage ring. Adenocarcinoma cells were detected in the mass, but no malignancy was found in several biopsy specimens of the tracheal lesions. F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography showed intense accumulation in the mass, nasal septum, and tracheal cartilage. Furthermore, the patient had elevated levels of anti-type II collagen antibody. He was finally diagnosed with lung cancer complicated by relapsing polychondritis. The treatment included oral prednisolone and sequential chemoradiotherapy for lung cancer.

Summary: In this study, a novel pathogen detection technology called droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) was developed and compared with real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) for detecting human adenovirus DNA. The results showed that ddPCR exhibited better reproducibility and sensitivity, as well as equivalent quantifiability, compared with qPCR. Therefore, ddPCR has the potential to provide a more accurate DNAemia detection, determine cutoff values for treatment initiation, and enable antiviral efficacy assessment.

Summary: Differential diagnosis of juvenile hemochromatosis with hemolytic anemia is challenging. We present a case of a 23-year-old woman with macrocytic hemolytic anemia and iron overload. A mutation in the PIEZO1 gene (heterozygous c.6008C>A: p.A2003D) was identified through target gene sequencing, which has been previously reported in a family with dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis (DHS1, [OMIM 194380]). This case highlights the importance of considering DHS1 in the differential diagnosis of iron overload associated with non-transfused hemolytic anemia in children and young adults.

Summary: This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of infants from NICU hospitalization to one year post-discharge. The study found that lower HRQL during NICU stay was associated with earlier gestational age, postnatal corticosteroid usage, outborn status, and gastrostomy tube placement. Lower HRQL at 3 and 12 months post-discharge was associated with readmissions, home oxygen use, parent-reported difficulty breathing, lower developmental scores, and not playing with other children. Most parents reported similar or improved HRQL after discharge, but parents of infants with respiratory symptoms experienced less improvement. Efforts to improve parent HRQL should focus on respiratory symptoms and social isolation.

Summary: This study developed reference values for cardiorespiratory fitness in children aged 6-18 years without underlying heart disease, measured by peak oxygen uptake and treadmill time. Fitness levels increased with age in males but not females. Males generally exhibited higher fitness levels compared to females in the same age groups.

Summary: This study aims to determine if children with elbow flexion contracture (EFC) caused by brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) are more likely to develop shoulder contracture and undergo surgical treatment. A retrospective review was conducted on children under 2 years old with BPBI who presented to a single children's hospital. The results showed that patients with EFC had reduced shoulder range of motion and higher odds of shoulder contracture and surgical treatment. Prompt referral to a BPBI specialty clinic is recommended for evaluation and potential surgery.
