Objective To examine whether succimer, a mercaptan compound known to reduce blood lead concentration in children, reduces blood mercury concentration. Study design We used samples from a randomized clinical trial of succimer chelation for lead-exposed children. We measured mercury levels in pre-treatment samples from 767 children. We also measured mercury levels in blood samples drawn 1 week after treatment began (n = 768) and in a 20% random sample of the children who received the maximum 3 courses of treatment (n = 67). A bootstrap-based isotonic regression method was used to compare the trend with time in the difference between the adjusted mean mercury concentrations in the succimer group and that in the placebo group. Results The adjusted mean organic mercury concentration in the succimer group relative to the placebo group fell from 99% at baseline to 82% after 3 courses of treatment (P for trend = .048), but this resulted from the prevention of the age-related increase in the succimer group. Conclusion Succimer chelation for low level organic mercury exposure in children has limited efficacy. (J Pediatr 2011;158:480-5).

Mapping the obesity problems scale to the SF-6D: results based on the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry (SOReg)

Sun Sun, Erik Stenberg, Yang Cao, Lars Lindholm, Klas-Goran Salen, Karl A. Franklin, Nan Luo

Summary: This study developed mapping algorithms to estimate SF-6D utility from the Obesity Problem Scale. The algorithms were based on data from the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry and were able to predict the SF-6D utility for pre- and post-surgery. This provides a useful tool for research and clinical practice.

Summary: This article discusses the use of multi-institutional time-bound observational cohort assessment approach (snapshot audit) for exploring the real-world effectiveness of surgical patient care. It compares the snapshot audit method with retrospective review of administrative datasets and prospective randomized control trials. The article presents the key features of developing, deploying, and assessing snapshot audit outcomes data.

The relationships between caregivers? self-reported and visual perception of child weight and their non-responsive feeding practices: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jian Wang, Kirsty Winkley, Xiaoxue Wei, Yang Cao, Yan-Shing Chang

Summary: This systematic review examined the relationships between caregivers' perception of child weight and their non-responsive feeding practices. The results showed that caregivers' visual and self-reported perception of child weight were positively associated with food restriction and negatively associated with pressure to eat. Caregivers who perceived their child as overweight were found to apply pressure to eat less frequently. The study highlights the importance of considering caregivers' perception of child weight in interventions to optimize feeding practices.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of preadmission beta-blocker therapy (BBt) on mortality in frail hip fracture patients, as measured by the Orthopedic Hip Frailty Score (OFS). The results show that BBt is associated with a reduced risk of 30-day postoperative mortality in frail patients, and the effect is more significant with higher OFS.

Summary: This study investigates the association between frailty and specific causes of mortality in hip fracture patients. The results show that frail patients have a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality at 30 and 90 days postoperatively. Development and Validation of an XGBoost-Algorithm-Powered Survival Model for Predicting In-Hospital Mortality Based on 545,388 Isolated Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Patients from the TQIP Database

Yang Cao, Maximilian Peter Forssten, Babak Sarani, Scott Montgomery, Shahin Mohseni

Summary: This study developed a predictive model for in-hospital mortality in patients with severe traumatic brain injury using the machine learning algorithm XGBoost. The model achieved excellent predictive ability for patients with a length of stay up to 5 days, but performance decreased for patients with longer stays. Factors such as injury severity, Glasgow Coma Scale on admission, and patient's age were found to be important predictors.

Summary: Using Mendelian randomization design and large-scale genome-wide association study data, we examined the impact of computer gaming on mental health. Our findings showed no distinctive results under a Bonferroni-corrected significance level, but suggestive evidence supported the causal effects of computer gaming on depression medication consumption and anxiety disorders. This study highlights the potential protective effect of computer gaming against mental health issues and provides insights for health promotion strategies based on digital interventions.

Health-Related Quality of Life for Parents of Infants with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Kathryn E. K. Berlin, William Scott, Sara Dawson, David Brousseau, Joanne M. Lagatta

Summary: This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of infants from NICU hospitalization to one year post-discharge. The study found that lower HRQL during NICU stay was associated with earlier gestational age, postnatal corticosteroid usage, outborn status, and gastrostomy tube placement. Lower HRQL at 3 and 12 months post-discharge was associated with readmissions, home oxygen use, parent-reported difficulty breathing, lower developmental scores, and not playing with other children. Most parents reported similar or improved HRQL after discharge, but parents of infants with respiratory symptoms experienced less improvement. Efforts to improve parent HRQL should focus on respiratory symptoms and social isolation.

Early Elbow Flexion Contracture Predicts Shoulder Contracture in Infants with Brachial Plexus Birth Injury

David S. Liu, Patricia Miller, Anna Rothenberg, Carley Vuillermin, Peter M. Waters, Andrea S. Bauer

Summary: This study aims to determine if children with elbow flexion contracture (EFC) caused by brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) are more likely to develop shoulder contracture and undergo surgical treatment. A retrospective review was conducted on children under 2 years old with BPBI who presented to a single children's hospital. The results showed that patients with EFC had reduced shoulder range of motion and higher odds of shoulder contracture and surgical treatment. Prompt referral to a BPBI specialty clinic is recommended for evaluation and potential surgery.
