Summary: This study aimed to examine the prevalence and related risk factors of congenital heart disease (CHD) in children with different birth weights in China, and the relationship between CHD subtypes and birth weight. The results showed that CHD was more prevalent in very low birth weight (VLBW) and low birth weight (LBW) infants. Some peri-pregnancy factors of parents were closely related to the occurrence of CHD in offspring.

Summary: This study found that early-term birth in pregnant women with CHD is associated with an increased risk of adverse neonatal outcomes, without a corresponding decrease in adverse cardiovascular or obstetric outcomes. Induction of labor before 39 weeks should be reserved for routine obstetrical indications in pregnancies with maternal CHD, unless there are maternal or fetal indications for early delivery.

Summary: The prevalence of congenital heart disease in very low birth weight preterm infants in Brazil was higher with higher mortality compared to the general population. Risk factors associated with congenital heart disease included maternal diabetes and age, while protective factors included maternal hypertension and congenital infection. Factors independently associated with death were major congenital anomaly, gestational age, and Score for Neonatal Acute Physiology and Perinatal Extension II.

Summary: Feeding and swallowing difficulties are common comorbidities in infants and children with congenital heart disease, adversely affecting their health and quality of life. This scoping review provides an integrated summary of published literature on the prevalence of these difficulties in the last 25 years, revealing a wide range of prevalence rates. The review confirms the need to assess and manage feeding and swallowing difficulties as part of standard care.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and prognostic implications of left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). The results showed that 12% of patients had LVSD, which was more common in right-sided lesions compared to left-sided lesions. Cardiovascular events occurred in 7% of patients and were associated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) were found to improve LVEF.

Summary: The incidence of congenital heart diseases is increasing in China, causing a significant health burden. A case-control study conducted in Lanzhou, China, found that maternal exposure to lead during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of congenital heart diseases, particularly isolated cases. Bradycardia is common among patients, but the severity of CHD is the only risk factor for survival. Summary: This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of infants from NICU hospitalization to one year post-discharge. The study found that lower HRQL during NICU stay was associated with earlier gestational age, postnatal corticosteroid usage, outborn status, and gastrostomy tube placement. Lower HRQL at 3 and 12 months post-discharge was associated with readmissions, home oxygen use, parent-reported difficulty breathing, lower developmental scores, and not playing with other children. Most parents reported similar or improved HRQL after discharge, but parents of infants with respiratory symptoms experienced less improvement. Efforts to improve parent HRQL should focus on respiratory symptoms and social isolation.

Summary: This study aims to determine if children with elbow flexion contracture (EFC) caused by brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) are more likely to develop shoulder contracture and undergo surgical treatment. A retrospective review was conducted on children under 2 years old with BPBI who presented to a single children's hospital. The results showed that patients with EFC had reduced shoulder range of motion and higher odds of shoulder contracture and surgical treatment. Prompt referral to a BPBI specialty clinic is recommended for evaluation and potential surgery.
