Inventory of large landslides along the Central Western Andes (ca. 15?-20? S): Landslide distribution patterns and insights on controlling factors

Fabrizio Delgado, Swann Zerathe, Stephane Schwartz, Bastien Mathieux, Carlos Benavente

Summary: This study presents an inventory of large landslides along the western flank of the Central Andes, examining their controlling factors and characteristics. The research reveals that the largest landslides contribute significantly to the total area, with rockslides being the dominant type. Most of the identified landslides are paleo events and are potentially influenced by tectonic activity. Further dating analysis is needed to explore temporal correlations with seismic and climatic cycles.

The Tertiary structuration of the Western Subalpine foreland deciphered by calcite-filled faults and veins

Antonin Bilau, Dorian Bienveignant, Yann Rolland, Stephane Schwartz, Nicolas Godeau, Abel Guihou, Pierre Deschamps, Xavier Mangenot, Benjamin Brigaud, Louise Boschetti, Thierry Dumont

Summary: The timing of fault activity in the frontal part of orogenic systems can be determined using a combination of U-Pb dating and stable isotope composition methods. This study successfully applied this methodology to understand the deformation timing of subalpine massifs fold and thrust belts. The analysis revealed variations in fluid temperature and composition, indicating deep underthrusting and exhumation in some areas. The dating of calcites showed multiple deformation events, highlighting the importance of inherited structures. The results provide valuable insights into the mountain building process.

Eustatic change modulates exhumation in the Japanese Alps

Georgina E. King, Floriane Ahadi, Shigeru Sueoka, Frederic Herman, Leif Anderson, Cecile Gautheron, Sumiko Tsukamoto, Nadja Stalder, Rabiul Biswas, Matthew Fox, Guillaume Delpech, Stephane Schwartz, Takahiro Tagami

Summary: The exhumation of bedrock is controlled by the interplay of tectonics, surface processes, and climate. This study shows that high exhumation rates are not only found in highly active tectonic convergence zones, but also in the Hida Mountain Range, Japanese Alps. The study also reveals that exhumation rates can change significantly within glacial-interglacial cycles, possibly due to a combination of factors.

Large landslide of the hyperarid Central Western Andes triggered during a humid period of the Late Pleistocene (ca. 19°S; northern Chile)

Swann Zerathe, Laurence Audin, Xavier Robert, Stephane Schwartz, Julien Carcaillet

Summary: New Be-10 surface exposure dating on the Limaxina landslide in northern Chile reveals that it occurred 80 +/- 4 ka ago, which is consistent with other local records of a wet episode in the Atacama Desert. This suggests that climate-forcing plays a primary role in landslide activity in this region, calling for further dating of slope failures in the arid Central western Andes to explore responses to Quaternary climate oscillations and extreme events.

Burial in the western Central Andes through Oligocene to Miocene ignimbrite flare-ups recorded by low-temperature thermochronology in the Canete Canyon, Peru

Laurence Audin, Benjamin Gerard, Cecile Gautheron, Stephane Schwartz, Carlos Benavente, Xavier Robert, Peter van der Beek, Rosella Pinna-Jamme, Melanie Balvay, Matthias Bernet, Audrey Margirier, Swann Zerathe

Summary: Thermochronological data is crucial for understanding the thermal and exhumation histories of active mountain ranges. However, in the Central Andes, the lack of bedrock outcrops and the presence of volcanic formations have limited the investigation of the exhumation history of the Western Cordillera. This study presents new thermochronological data from the Canete Canyon, indicating the importance of considering burial associated with thick volcanic formations when interpreting data from this region.

Early onset of Pyrenean collision (97-90 Ma) evidenced by U-Pb dating on calcite (Provence, SE France)

Antonin Bilau, Yann Rolland, Thierry Dumont, Stephane Schwartz, Nicolas Godeau, Abel Guihou, Pierre Deschamps

Summary: The uplift of Provence in the early Late Cretaceous led to the formation of the Durance Isthmus. Through U-Pb dating of calcite in compressional structures related to Pyrenean foreland compression in Provence, it is found that north-south shortening occurred at the same time as the emersion of the Durance Isthmus, with top-to-the-North to northwest thrusts developed between 97 and 90 million years ago. This large-scale event, observed from the Pyrenees to the Middle-East regions, is interpreted as a precursor to the reorganization of the Africa-Europe plates. The change in tectonic style and shortening amount between Provence and Pyrenees is attributed to the sinistral reactivation of the NE-SW Cevennes and Nimes faults, acting as transform boundaries in this early collisional context.

Detectability of carbon with ChemCam LIBS: Distinguishing sample from Mars atmospheric carbon, and application to Gale crater

P. Beck, P. Y. Meslin, A. Fau, O. Forni, O. Gasnault, J. Lasue, A. Cousin, S. Schroeder, S. Maurice, W. Rapin, R. C. Wiens, A. M. Ollila, E. Dehouck, N. Mangold, B. Garcia, S. Schwartz, W. Goetz, N. Lanza

Summary: Analysis of data obtained by ChemCam on Mars reveals that the carbon signal is mainly related to ionization of the atmosphere, with variability potentially linked to the physical state of the atmosphere. Up to sol 3355, no carbonate was detected in the ChemCam dataset, suggesting that it is not a major constituent (>50%) in the analyzed targets and that carbon in soils is not enriched beyond the limit of detection. The dominant salts found in Gale are sulfate and chlorides, while the absence of carbonates, seen in Jezero, may be due to differences in protolith.

Health-Related Quality of Life for Parents of Infants with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Kathryn E. K. Berlin, William Scott, Sara Dawson, David Brousseau, Joanne M. Lagatta

Summary: This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of infants from NICU hospitalization to one year post-discharge. The study found that lower HRQL during NICU stay was associated with earlier gestational age, postnatal corticosteroid usage, outborn status, and gastrostomy tube placement. Lower HRQL at 3 and 12 months post-discharge was associated with readmissions, home oxygen use, parent-reported difficulty breathing, lower developmental scores, and not playing with other children. Most parents reported similar or improved HRQL after discharge, but parents of infants with respiratory symptoms experienced less improvement. Efforts to improve parent HRQL should focus on respiratory symptoms and social isolation.
