Summary: The study found no significant difference in blood glucose control outcomes between critically ill patients fed semi-elemental formulas and those fed polymer formulas. A serum HbA1C level of <7.5% was identified as a risk factor for hospital mortality. Enteral formulas with lower carbohydrate content were associated with better blood glucose control.

Summary: This study reports a case of a neonate with congenital sodium diarrhea (CSD) and common symptoms including distended abdomen, clear yellow fluid draining from the rectum, dehydration, and electrolyte abnormalities. The infant was diagnosed with a heterozygous variant in the GUCY2C gene associated with autosomal dominant CSD and initially treated with parenteral nutrition (PN) before transitioning to full enteral feeds. The case highlights the ability to maintain electrolyte levels through enteral means and avoid long-term intravenous access.

Summary: Cow's milk allergy is a common food allergy in children. For breast-fed infants, the mother is advised to avoid dairy products. In cases where avoidance is not possible, hypoallergenic replacement formulas are recommended. If these formulas are ineffective or allergic symptoms persist, amino acid-based formulas should be considered.

Summary: The first 1000 days is a critical period for optimizing nutrition. Young children have unique nutrient needs, and there are differences in dietary patterns and recommendations for young children between the US and globally. This paper compares the differences in young child nutrition and identifies knowledge gaps and surveillance gaps to be filled.

Summary: Immature immune system and environmental stress increase infection risk in nursing pigs. Nutritional and physiological conditions of sows affect the growth, development, and disease resistance of the offspring. Studies have shown that providing sows with certain nutrients can regulate piglets' immunity and inflammatory response.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy and tolerance of a semi-elemental versus a polymeric formula for enteral nutrition in brain-injured critically ill patients. The results showed that the semi-elemental formula did not improve daily energy intake or gastrointestinal tolerance compared to the polymeric formula.

Summary: Research suggests that heating water for preparing infant formula may pose a risk of burns to infants. Although the incidence of burn injuries is relatively low, there is still a potential danger that should be addressed in preparation guidelines.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the differences in energy value and nutrient intake, body composition, aerobic performance, and hair mineral status between training and competition periods for triathletes. The results indicated improved performance during the competition period, with no differences in nutrition and body composition between the two periods. Depletion in hair iron content was found during the competition period, and there were significant relationships between hair calcium content and aerobic performance during the training period. This highlights the importance of nutritional education for triathletes to prevent nutrient deficiencies.

Summary: The postnatal lung development in newborns is influenced by early life factors such as nutrition and maternal bonding. Maternal microbial material plays a crucial role in pulmonary immune maturation. Early maternal contact and timely breast milk feeding are valuable intervention measures to promote early postnatal lung development in pediatric patients.

Summary: Birth occurring at very preterm or extremely preterm gestation may lead to respiratory problems both in the immediate newborn period and throughout childhood and adulthood. Despite improvements in neonatal care, a considerable percentage of preterm infants develop long-term respiratory deficits due to interrupted respiratory development and postnatal lung injury caused by interventions.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the epidemiology, clinical course, treatment, and outcomes of neonatal ARDS. The prevalence and survival of neonatal ARDS were found to be similar to pediatric ARDS. Different subtypes of neonatal ARDS may have distinct clinical outcomes and a different distribution among term and preterm neonates.

Summary: This study conducted a nationwide survey in Italian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to investigate the usage of lung ultrasound (LU) in the evaluation of neonatal respiratory diseases. The results showed that LU has a widespread use in Italian NICUs, but its application varies among different centers. Standardization of clinical practice guidelines and implementation of a formalized and accredited training program are urgently needed.

Summary: Lung ultrasound has the potential to be a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases in newborns. By using classification and semiquantitative scores, it can help predict the need for surfactant replacement therapy in preterm infants and identify newborns at risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Summary: This study evaluated the appropriateness of intrapartum ZDV use in Italy. The results showed that in women with HIV-RNA < 50 copies/ml, discontinuation of ART during pregnancy was the strongest risk factor for vertical transmission, while higher gestational age and newborn receiving PEP were protective factors. The use of intrapartum ZDV did not influence the final outcome in this group.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of lung ultrasound score (LUS) in identifying preterm infants who require surfactant therapy. The results showed that LUS had high sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy in predicting the need for the first surfactant dose. However, there was high heterogeneity in predicting multiple surfactant doses.

Summary: This review examines the efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics and antiviral efficacy of Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir against SARS-COV-2 infection based on rigorous analysis of in vitro and in vivo studies. Expert opinion suggests that early administration of Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir during mild-to-moderate COVID-19 can prevent aberrant immune responses and complications. However, its use may be limited by drug interactions and the risk of infection relapse.

Summary: The study reports the activity of a specialized unit in Southern Italy in assisting a large area with congenital syphilis cases. The study found that congenital syphilis still has a significant impact in Europe, and prevention strategies should be targeted towards specific maternal risk profiles. Summary: Parents of preterm infants who have been hospitalized in the NICU may experience psychopathological symptoms, with mothers being more likely than fathers to develop posttraumatic symptoms. Maternal avoidance symptoms are related to perception of their own infant's appearance, while emotional aspects linked to maternal role predict hyperarousal symptoms. Maternal PTTS severity is influenced by social functioning. Paternal mental health is associated with both maternal and paternal intrusive symptoms, while maternal stress is related to paternal avoidance symptoms.
